Cattle raising in East Nusa Tenggara play important role in the daily life of local people including to fulfill nutritional needs, to generate cash income, to develop social relationships, and to maintain religious activities. On the island of Timor, the type of cattle mostly kept by farmers is Bali cattle. This type of cattle perfectly suits the environmental and social conditions of the island. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction of social-ecological systems (SESs) and other systems that were able to maintain the sustainability of Bali cattle raising in Timor Island.  All components in the system that interact with each other were studied through in-depth interviews with informants (15 cattle farmers, five community leaders, five cattle traders, and 10 staff of livestock services district and province levels). The results showed that the SESs approach could provide an explanation on the relationship between resource systems, resource units, governance systems, and users as well as systems that are outside SESs, namely the market and government policies, which altogether were able to improve Bali cattle raising sustainability. Farmers had an important role in Bali cattle raising and their habitat environment. Local and export markets played a role in providing value for Bali cattle raising. The local government maintained the balance of supply and demand for Bali cattle through the East Nusa Tenggara Governor Regulations No. 78 of 2019. Therefore, the research has succeeded in identification of feed resources in savanna and steppe and provide an opportunity to increase the cattle population on the island of Timor. The interaction between farmers and their environment has been well established, however, it is necessary to improve the quality of forage feed in grazing land.

Biodiversitas 22: 2980-2987. Despite the risk and hazards of the Mt. Merapi prone area, people continue to stay in the area as Agroforestry Adopters. This study aims to analyze the gender perspectives on agroforestry (AF) practices in the Mt. Merapi prone area. 128 men and 86 women were randomly selected from four different areas. Descriptive analysis, independent t-test, and logistic multinomial regression were used to analyze the data. Gender issue in AF practices is found in some parts of the practices. For example, women are more predominant in marketing the products rather than men, whilst the men are predominant in activities that need more strength such as planting. An external factor that is significant is the different impacts of farmers support groups on men and women. Meanwhile, factors such as capital access and AF easiness do not show significant differences between men and women. In other words, these two variables are felt the same among men and women when practicing AF. As for the contribution of AF, social aspect is found to show significant differences, whilst economic and ecology do not show significant differences to both the men and women. Additionally, factors that affect the perspectives on AF contribution vary among the respondents across both groups of men and women. This study suggests that the different perspectives and factors that are affecting AF farmers can be used to develop future AF promotion programs.

Abstract. Gunawan, Rizki MI, Anafarida O, Mahmudah N. 2021. Modeling potential distribution of Baccaurea macrocarpa in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3230-3236. Baccaurea macrocarpa is fruit tree that has a potential source of food and medicine. However, little is known about the occurrences and potential distribution of B. macrocarpa mainly in South Kalimantan. This study is the first to predict the distribution of B. macrocarpa in South Kalimantan using maximum entropy (MaxEnt). Modeling included 102 occurrence records with 19 bioclimatic variables, solar radiation, altitude, and slope. Temperature, solar radiation, and precipitation were the key environmental factor influencing the distribution of B. macrocarpa. The district of HS (Hulu Sungai Selatan), HT (Hulu Sungai Tengah), HU (Hulu Sungai Utara), BL (Balangan), and TG (Tabalong) were predicted as highly suitable areas (IHS 0.6-1) for this species. The MaxEnt model performed better than the random method with an Area Under Curve (AUC) value of 0.817, indicating that the model is good and informative model for habitat suitability of B. macrocarpa. The predicted model we presented here can help habitat conservation, biodiversity conservation planning and monitoring, and cultivation in the future for B. macrocarpa.

Abstract. Boontanom P, Chantarasiri A. 2021. Diversity and cellulolytic activity of culturable bacteria isolated from the gut of higher termites (Odontotermes sp.) in eastern Thailand. Biodiversitas 22: 3349-3357. Cellulolytic bacteria are vital symbionts associated with the gut of all higher termites. Odontotermes termites are a higher termite widely found in Thailand. However, information concerning the diversity of cellulolytic bacteria in this termite gut remains inadequate. The aim of this study is to isolate and identify the culturable cellulolytic bacteria from the Odontotermes gut collected from eastern Thailand. The crude cellulases produced from the most active cellulolytic bacterium were further characterized. Thirty-two cellulolytic bacteria were isolated and subsequently classified by PCR-RFLP of the 16S rRNA gene. A total of 10 different RFLP patterns were obtained belonging to five bacterial genera, namely Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Citrobacter, Paenibacillus, and Serratia. The B. cereus strain TWV503 was considered to be the most active cellulolytic bacterium based on the CMC agar method. B. cereus strain TWV503 showed CMCase activity at 2.190 ± 0.063 U/mL of CMCase and 0.276 ± 0.031 U/mL of FPase. The optimum temperature and pH for CMCase activity were 50°C and the neutral pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.0, respectively. CMCase activity remained stable at up to 70°C and neutral pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.0 for 24 hours of incubation. This study revealed novel information related to cellulolytic bacteria isolated from the gut of Odontotermes termites collected from Thailand.

Biodiversitas 22: 3773-3784. Throughout South Africa, ordinary people are managing and using local natural resources in ways that enhance their lives, but there is a major concern about the sustainability of wild plant harvest. This study aims to investigate the current management strategies employed by local people in the Limpopo Province for selected threatened or protected plant species (TOPS). Semi-structured questionnaires were used to gather information from a total of 333 participants, i.e. 110 community members (CMs), 180 traditional health practitioners (THPs), and 28 traditional leaders (TLs), as well as from 15 conservation officers (COs). The study area included the districts of Capricorn, Sekhukhune, Mopani, Vhembe, and Waterberg. Results indicated that in all districts of the province most CMs and THPs reported that no one managed plant resources in their surrounding communal lands, though TLs indicated that the state was involved with management. Fifty-nine percent of THPs indicated that there are no traditional rules that are applied towards conservation of communal lands, yet 91% of other participants in the Mopani, Sekhukhune, and Capricorn districts indicated that traditional rules are followed. Most CMs in these three districts were allowed to participate in conservation initiatives, although most of them did not know that the plants they were using were threatened and protected in legislation. It is recommended that collaborative partnerships be initiated between government and TLs in relation to managing the threatened or protected plant species in communal lands.

In Indonesia, oil palm is mostly cultivated on red-yellow podzolic soils, which mainly contain the high availability of aluminum (Al). This condition might affect oil palm growth i.e stunted growth and root damage. Therefore, this study was aimed to characterize metabolic activities and growth of eight oil palm progenies under Al toxicity. The study was conducted from January to December 2018 in Bendosari Hamlet, Madurejo Village, Prambanan Sub-District, Sleman District, Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) factorial with three blocks as replications, with experimental factors including oil palm progenies and Al concentration. The observation was conducted on Al concentration in the planting medium, metabolic activities, and oil palm growth. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, PLS-SEM, stepwise regression, hierarchical clustering heatmap, and GGE-Biplot. The results showed that Simalungun, Dumpy, and Yangambi progeny could grow and adapt better than other progenies in Al toxicity conditions. The resistance to Al poisoning mechanism was shown by a relatively low activity of O2-, H2O2, MDA, and REL, whereas SOD, POD, GB, AARed, ?-Toch, TPC RDW and, SDW showed higher relatively.

Abstract. Elfrida, Tarigan NS, Suwardi AB. 2021. Ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants used by community in Jambur Labu Village, East Aceh, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2893-2900. Jambur Labu is a village in East Aceh that is home to various ethnic groups. The community in the village has used various plant species as a traditional medicine to treat diseases and disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the medicinal plants used by the community in the Jambur Labu Village, Birem Bayeun Sub-district, East Aceh, Indonesia. This study was based on field surveys, plant collection, and interviews with the local people. Interviews were performed with 30 informants selected using the Snowball Sampling technique. A total of 107 medicinal plant species, belonging to 87 families, were documented to be used by the local community in Jambur Labu Village. Leaves were the most used plant part (38%), followed by fruit (22%), whole plant (9%), rhizome (8%), roots (7%), flowers and bark (4% each), sap (3%), stem and tuber (2% each), and seeds (1%) and the main mode of preparations are decoction (39%). Breynia androgyna (L.) Chakrab.dan N.P.Balakr., Moringa oleifera Lam, Jatropha multifida L., Zingiber montanum (J.Koenig) Link ex A.Dietr., Zingiber officinale Roscoe., and Tagetes erecta L. had the highest UV value (0.96), indicating the high importance of such species for the community. The high informant consensus factor (ICF=0.978) was assigned to the diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism (DBF) category. The results of this study can enrich the existing study of medicinal uses of plant by communities, in this context is the use by a community in Aceh.

Next-generation sequencing-based Actinobacteria community associated with Callyspongia sp. from Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park, Jakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3702-3708. Sponges are sessile benthic filter-feeding animals, which harbor numerous microbes. The enormous community and abundance of sponge-associated actinobacteria envisage sponges as hot spots of microbes. The metagenomic approach with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology was used to investigate the actinobacteria community of Callyspongia sp. collected from Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park, Indonesia. Fourteen actinobacteria families were found associated with the sponge. Among them, Microbacteriaceae was the most dominant family. The community of actinobacteria was higher than that of the culturable method from our previous study. The research showed that a metagenomic approach using NGS technology reveals better information regarding the actinobacteria community associated with Callyspongia sp.

Abstract. Nasrudin, Kurniasih B. 2021. The agro-physiological characteristics of three rice varieties affected by water depth in the coastal agricultural land of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3656-3662. Coastal agricultural land has many obstacles of abiotic stress for plant cultivation, including waterlogging, strong wind, and high salt concentration. Therefore, the use of adaptive rice varieties, as well as good land management, are expected to be a solution for rice cultivation in the coastal agricultural land. The objective of this study was to examine the agro-physiological characteristics of three rice varieties planted in coastal agricultural land which were affected by water salinity up to more than 10 dS m-1. This study was conducted from February to July 2017 at Tirtohargo, Bantul District, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design, with the depths of sunken-bed as a main plot consisted of 25 cm and 50 cm, and variety as a subplot consisted of IR 64, Inpara 4, and Dendang. The experiment results showed that Dendang had the highest growth and yield in coastal agricultural land compared to Inpara 4 and IR64. The highest value is indicated in plant height, leaf area, proline content, and productivity. The depths 50 cm of sunken-bed increased leaf area and proline content, whereas the depths of 25 cm sunken-bed increased productivity. Dendang showed better agro-physiological activity and had the highest productivity. The depths of 50 cm increased several parameters in agro-physiological characteristics, however, the depths of 25 cm increased grain yield. Among the varieties tested, in salinity, the highest growth and yield variables were shown by Dendang, followed by IR 64 and Inpara 4.

Abstract

While phosphorus (P) is a vital element for the plant to grow, only 0.1% of the phosphate soil is directly to be uptake by plants. Consequently, P fertilizer, which is mostly taken from unrenewable resources of phosphate rock, is practically added into the croplands. Nevertheless, as the demand for this fertilizer kept increasing, the availability of resources and environmental issues are currently raising wide concerns. Alternatively, soil phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is promising to be further developed as a biofertilizer to increase the availability of P elements for plants. This study aims to screen and characterize novel PSB from the tropical rainforest soil. The soil samples were collected from the Danum Valley tropical rainforest, Sabah. Phosphatase solubilizing bacteria were then screened using the NBRIP Agar selective media. The screening results yielded five colonies, designated as PSB1, PSB2, PSB3, PSB4, and PSB5, displaying halos, with an average diameter of 10mm. Further, 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis using BLASTn suggested that PSB1, PSB2, PSB3, PSB4, and PSB5 were designated as Bacillus sp. PSB01, Pseudomonas oryzyhabitans PSB02, Staphylococcus pasteuri PSB03, Paenibacillus sp. PSB04, and Staphylococcus pasteuri PSB05, respectively. Interestingly, the Paenibacillus group is a promising biofertilizer and is currently used in the global agriculture industry. Accordingly, Paenibacillus sp. PSB04 was then selected for further characterization using Gram staining and observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The Gram staining revealed that Paenibacillus sp. PSB04 is a Gram-negative bacterium with a rod shape, which is in good agreement with the SEM result. The specific phosphatase activity of the extracellular fraction of this bacterium was 7378.12 U mg-1 which is the highest activity compared to previous studies. This study provides an early insight into an excellent phosphate solubilizing bacterium for the agriculture industry obtained from Danum Valley.
