Abstract

The detail observation had been done on the morphological characters of Rafflesia hasseltii from Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park (BTNP). Currently, this endangered and rare flower found in two populations in this park, Aek Telap and Mandi Urau, Tanah Datar. The preliminary study on morphological characters of flowers from this site shows blotches and dot pattern variability. The detail observation of morphology of R. hasseltii from BTNP, presented the similarity to its type except the blotches pattern in perigone lobe. However, the further monitoring research is still needed to observe more flowers in this site. Due to its rarity, study on all Rafflesia species must be carefully done especially in using the characters of blotch for taxonomy evidence, as this characters show the variability among the flowers within population.© 2007 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: Rafflesia hasseltii, tjendawan muka rimau, morphology

Abstract

Cuscus hunting by Napan communities at the Arui village of Ratewi Island was conducted from July to September 2007 by interviewing hunter respondent and direct observation to the field. Twenty households were selected as respondent with the criterion hunting and utilizing cuscus. The study indicated active hunting is performing mostly for consumption purpose, using several combinations of hunting tools from traditional to modern ones, found around mix forest or combination between primary and secondary forest. Cutting the cuscus nesting tree resulted negative impact on the cover and food sources for the future conservation purpose. Two species of cuscus occurred in the study site, they were common cuscus (Phalanger orientalis) and spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus), and based their qualitative traits both species can be distinguished morphologically.© 2007 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: cuscus hunting, Napan, Ratewi Island, Papua.

Abstract

Mudiana D. 2016. Syzygium diversity in Gunung Baung, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 733-740. Syzygium (Myrtaceae) consists of a lot of species which are widely distributed. One of the distribution areas is the Natural Park of Gunung Baung (TWA Gunung Baung) in Pasuruan, East Java. The results of exploration and characterization of known species show that there are six species of Syzygium known to grow in this region namely S. cumini, S. littorale, S. pycnanthum, S. polyanthum, S. racemosum, and S. samarangense. S. pycnanthum is the most frequently found in Gunung Baung. S. polyanthum and S. samarangense are the only species that are known to be cultivated. Four other species are wild and have not been explored for their potential utilization.

Abstract

Tropical floodplain rivers are home to the largest fraction of freshwater fish diversity and as such should be a focal point of fish conservation efforts. The aim of this study was to inventory of the fish fauna and analyzing the effect of seasonality on fish species composition and abundance in the Rungan river floodplain at Palangkaraya Municipality. The results of this study provide background data for conserving fish resources. Fishes were sampled at monthly intervals between May 2005 and April 2006 with gillnets of standardized dimensions with several mesh sizes. These were carried out at three stations with different habitat type, includes forested swamp, opened swamp, and river. A total of 4278 fishes were collected consisting of 50 species and 19 families. Seasonality effects on fish species composition andabundance in forested swamp and river. The use of sulphate-reducing bacteria in bioremediation of ex-coal mining soil ENNY WIDYATI

Abstract

The most serious impact after exploiting coal by opened peat mining is acid mine drainage phenomenon. This is an oxidation of sulphide minerals by releasing sulphate that generate the environment acidity. This study was aimed to observe the ability of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated of sludge paper mills in decreasing the ex-coal mining sulphate content. Before inoculating onto the soil, SRB was incubated in the sterilized organic matter for 4 days. Organic matter inhabited SRB mix with ex-coal mining soil (1:3 v/v). As a control was a series ex-coal mining mixed with non inoculated organic matter (1:3 v/v). The experiment is carried out in randomized complete design in 3 replications, each consist of 5 buckets. All buckets were maintained in saturated water content. Every 5 days for 20 days the sulphate content, pH and Eh were assessed to observe the bioremediation progress. The result shown that SRB was able to reduce 84.25% excoal mining sulphate content in 20 days. In consequence, the soil pH was increased from 4.15 to 6.66 during the process. Short Communication: The survival rate and one-year growth of Shorea javanica, Shorea macrobalanos and Hopea mengarawan in coal mined land in Central Bengkulu, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 741-745. Dipterocarp trees used to dominate the lowland forest of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Currently, however, dipterocarp trees are rare due to deforestation of natural forest. One major cause of deforestation in Sumatra and Kalimantan is coal mining. Rehabilitation of coal mined soil is usually done using fast-growing alien species. We tried to restore a piece of mined land in Central Bengkulu, using commercially valuable species of Dipterocarpaceae, namely Shorea javanica Koord. & Valet., Shorea macrobalanos Ashton and Hopea mengarawan Miq. In this article, we presented the survival rate and growth of the one year old seedlings of these three species within one year of observation. Of the three species, S. macrobalanos had the highest survival rate (93%), followed by S. javanica (80%) and H. mengarawan (77%). Within a year, the one year old seedlings of S. macrobalanos grew 452% in height, significantly higher than that of S. javanica (221%) and of H. mengarawan (119%). Shorea macrobalanos also had the highest growth in diameter within a year, namely 337%, followed by S. javanica (145%) and H. mengarawan (135%). It can be concluded that within a year of observation, the three species of dipterocarps could grow relatively well in mined land. It is therefore recommended that in the restoration of mined land in Sumatra economically valuable native species of dipterocarps should be used instead of fast-growing alien species.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to study using chlorophyll and carotenoid as bioindicator air quality. This research used completely randomized design 2 x 4 factorial with 5 replicates. The first factor was distance from source of exhaust automobile emissions, consists of 4 levels: 0,50, 100, and 200 m. The second factor was plant spesies, consist 2 level: Plantago major and Phaseolus vulgaris. Data collected were analyzed using Multiple Regression Analysis followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test in 5% confidence level. The result indicated that increasing distance from source exhaust automobile emission, increased growth and chlorophyll content. Widhiono I, Sudiana E, Sucianto ET. 2016. Insect pollinator diversity along a habitat quality gradient on Mount Slamet,Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 746-752. The diversity of wild bees and wasps in seven habitat types (natural forest, teak forest, pine forest, Agathis forest, community forest, gardens, and agricultural areas) representing the habitat quality gradient of Mount Slamet and adjacent areas in Central Java, Indonesia, was studied from April to June 2012. We examined whether habitat quality affected the diversity of wild bees and wasp pollinators. In total, 938 wild bee and wasp specimens representing 13 species of bees and 2 species of wasps were collected using kite netting. Wild bee diversity differed significantly among the habitat types (F 6,281 = 1.2 p < 0.05). The Spearman’s correlation coefficients confirmed that wild bee diversity was correlated with habitat quality (r2 = 0.67 p < 0.05).Habitats that included all of the major wild plant species supported the highest wild bee diversity.

Abstract

Analysis of the variation of D-Loop mtDNA of East Kalimantan orangutan was done to provided the genetic information data from endangerd species in order to support their population conservation efforts. The reason using mtDNA in this research is caused by higher level of mutation ( 5 – 10 trimes) when compared with nuclear DNA and it enable to transmited via maternal transmission without experience in recombination. From the analysis conducted on 38 samples resulting eight types of haplotype that is A, B, C, D, E, G, H and I haplotype. Level of variation of the haplotype at East Kutai district was more uniform when compared by variation in Kutai district. From the paternal analysis had been got three cluster with the nearer among cluster IADG and cluster EH compared by cluster BC. Dissociation timebetween haplotype are 250.000-400.000 years ago, and known the population of East Kalimantan orangutan separated from Sumatran orangutan (X97708) since 1.158.300 years ago.© 2007 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: , D-Loop mtDNA, East Kalimantan

Abstract

A research about nitrogen–use efficiency (NUE) and trees identification was conducted at different vegetation type at Cikaniki, Halimun- Salak National Park, West Java. Plot quadrate methods (20 x 50 m) was used to analyze trees vegetation and Kjeldahl methods was used to analyze leaf nitrogen. The width and length of the leaf was also measured to obtain the leaf surface area. The result showed that there are 61 individual trees which consisted of 24 species was identified. The species which have 5 highest important value are Altingia excelsa (64,657), Castanopsis javanica (39,698), Platea latifolia (27,684), Garcinia rostrata (21,151), and Schima walichii (16,049). FuthermoreEugenia lineata (13,967), Melanochyla caesa (12,241), Quercus lineata (10,766), platea excelsa (10,766) have lower important value. Other trees have important value less than 10. Morphological and nitrogen content analyze were done on 4 species : Quercus lineata, G. rostrata, A. excelsa, and E. lineata. Among them, Quercus lineata has highest specific leaf area (SLA) (0,01153), followed by G. rostrata (0,00821), A. excelsa (0,00579), and E. lineata (0,00984 g/cm2. The highest number of stomata was found on A. excelsa (85,10/mm2), followed by E. lineata (74,40/mm2), Q. lineata (53,70/mm2), and G. rostrata (18,4 /mm2). The emergent species (A. excelsa and Q. lineata)have higher nitrogen content than the underlayer species (G. rostrata and E. lineata). A. excelsa have highest nitrogen use efficiency (28,19%) compare to E. lineata (23,81%) , Q. lineata (19,09%), and G. rostrata (14,87%).
