Short Communication: Plants used by Sundanese mothers for maternal care in a rural village in Bandung District, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3568-3573. Traditional beliefs and plants are pivotal during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Little is known of Sundanese, a small ethnic group whose traditions and use of plants facilitate easier pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. This study aimed to determine the traditional beliefs and types of plants used by Sundanese mothers of Bandung District, West Java, Indonesia during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Individual interviews using structured questions were conducted to collect socio-demography data and gather information on traditional beliefs and the use of plants concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Purposive and snowball sampling was employed to enroll women of reproductive age who were either pregnant at the time of the study or had recently given birth and were postpartum. Data were collected from 119 Sundanese women. These women frequently used 25 different medicinal plant species from 21 families to treat various conditions that arise during pregnancy and childbirth. The Zingiberaceae plant family was observed to be the most commonly used, with leaves being the most frequently utilized plant part. Decoction and cooking were reported as the most favored remedy preparation. The most effective plants during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum were Cocos nucifera L., Cocos nucifera L., and Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr., respectively. Therefore, to promote sustainable women's health in rural areas, the current findings highlight the necessity for conservation efforts and further studies on the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of frequently used food and medicinal plants.

Sawangha M, Dermail A, Chankaew S, Simla S, Lertrat K, Suriharn K. 2023. Reciprocal cross effect over seasons on agronomic and yield traits in waxy corn under tropical savanna. Biodiversitas 24: 4120-4125. The exponentially increasing number of hybrids per additional inbred lines results in a tremendous workload in crop hybrid breeding. The question arises if reciprocal crosses could be excluded in waxy corn hybrids to reduce the workload by up to 50%. In this study, we aimed to assess the importance of reciprocal cross effects for yields, yield components, and agronomic traits of sweet-waxy corn F1hybrids and to validate the stability of those effects over seasons. Five parental lines, comprised of one sweet corn inbred line and four waxy corn inbred lines, were mated through a top cross scheme to generate eight F1progenies, including the reciprocals. All genotypes, including checks, were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications in the dry season of 2021/2022 and the rainy season of 2022 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Genotype was significant for all observed traits, and the interaction between genotype and season was significant for all traits. The reciprocal cross-effect was non-significant for most observed traits. The non-significance of the interaction between N vs. R and season confirmed the absence of reciprocal cross effects in different growing seasons. Thus, dissecting one of two possibilities in each cross combination is advisable for affordable hybrid formations. Considering the absence of reciprocal cross effects but significant G × E effect for given traits, allocating more efforts and resources for conducting multi-environment trials is advisable to reduce the gap between actual and potential yields of testing hybrids.

Abstract. Pitimol N, Srikosamatara S. 2023. Population ecology and genetic study of gaur (Bos gaurus) in a small protected area in Thailand. Biodiversitas 24: 3369-3377. Gaur population in Khao Phaeng Ma (KPM) restored forest increased from 6 individuals in 1995 to 1996 in 2006 and more afterward. Data on population sizes, distribution and genetic status are needed for effective management. The aim of this study was to obtain data on gaur population size, structure and broad distribution, and on gaur genetic diversity in KPM. For a one-year period from 2014-2015, data were collected in three areas on gaur number, group size, sex, and age using direct observation. Genetic diversity was examined at 15 cross-species microsatellite loci. The total number of gaurs was at least 184, with these individuals being highly concentrated on the western side of the area. The average group size was 13.15±0.98 (n=356). The proportion of adult males to adult females, juveniles, and calves was 35:100:51:65. From the 10 samples (4 tissue, 6 fecal), the number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 6 (average 4.07). The expected and observed heterozygosity were 0.594 and 0.649, respectively. The gaur population is increasing and distributes more at the forest edge. Genetic diversity was lower than gaur populations in Vietnam and India. Habitat management should be done to minimize human-gaur conflicts and increase gene flow between populations.

Phytotelmata accounts for Aedes breeding places in Mantup Sub-district, Lamongan District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4820-4828. Dengue infection still remains a public health problem in Indonesia, which is classified as a tropical country. Some environmental factors that contribute to the transmission of dengue infection are human migration, human activity, food supply, and climate change. The other type of breeding place is natural breeding habitats, called phytotelmata. This study aims to investigate the diversity of Aedes species in phytotelmata from Mantup Sub-district, Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia. The analytical observational study was conducted with a purposive sampling design. Mosquito larvae collection was carried out from February to March 2023 in Mantup Sub-district, an endemic region of dengue infection in Lamongan. Immature mosquitoes were reared in the laboratory till they merged into adult mosquitoes. This study found four groups of phytotelmata: leaf axils, bamboo joints, fallen leaves, and coconut shells. Leaf axils were the predominant type of phytotelmata (86.67%). Meanwhile, the lowest percentage was coconut shells and fallen leaves (3.33%). A total of 56 mosquito larvae consisting of 12 male Aedes aegypti, 21 female Ae. aegypti, 12 male Aedes albopictus, and 11 female Ae. albopictus were collected from 30 observation points. Eleven families of phytotelmata were found in this study. The predominant family was Araceae (33.3%), while the lowest were Agavaceae, Commelinaceae, Marantaceae, and Liliaceae (3.33%). Phytotelmata accounts for mosquito breeding places, which should be noticed and considered in dengue vector control programs.

Biodiversitas 24: 6351-6359. Maize hybrids become more acceptable than other cultivar types since they promise high yield and uniformity by exploiting the heterosis advantages. Numerous lines are to be crossed to obtain the promising hybrids, and the progenies must be tested in multi-environment trials. Handling large number of genotypes in routine work is resource intensive; thus, the question arises if hybrid prediction based on the mid-parent (MP) value is feasible to reduce the workload. This study aimed to investigate the reliability of MP values in hybrid prediction through simple linear correlation and to estimate the magnitude of heterosis on given traits in sweet-waxy corn. Six parental lines and 10 F1 hybrids were evaluated in Khon Kaen in the dry and rainy seasons (2021/2022). Genotype and the interaction between genotype and season were significant for all observed traits. Waxy corn genotype 8A3-B was a good combiner for yield and yield components. Heterosis was trait-dependent, and it could imply parental adaptation when the estimation was done in contrasting environments. We found that the MP value can be used to predict the hybrid performance for flowering times only, but this approach was not effective for the rest agronomic traits. Since commonly, maize improvements are regarding multiple favorable traits, the strategy to use MP as single factor in hybrid prediction was not reliable. Other approaches, either SCA alone or the sum of mid-parent GCA and SCA, could be implemented for hybrid prediction in future studies.

Density distribution of Penaeus merguensis De Man, 1888 based on habitat in the waters of Merauke District, South Papua Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4427-4437. The waters of Merauke District, located in the Arafura Sea area, have relatively hight penaeid resource, but prawn fishing productivity is the lowest of 11th other Indonesian fisheries management areas.. The optimization of the fishery resource utilization remains poor after the moratorium on fishing vessel licensing in 2014, which is only 11%. Hence, a study is needed to determine the resources’ distribution, abundance, and sustainability. This research aims to analyze the density distribution of banana prawn (Penaeus merguensis De Man, 1888) based on the habitat type, each location separated by ~4-5 kilometers within the coastal ecosystem waters of Merauke District. The research was carried out from March to August 2022. Data were collected within each habitat: the catch, prawn fishing equipment, and oceanographic parameters, and then analyses were undertaken using statistical tests. The results showed that the highest density of banana prawn was obtained in shallow waters adjacent to the mangrove habitat at Bokem (32.68 kg/km2) and Yobar (20.27 kg/km2). In waters adjacent to the sandy beach at Payum (17.98 kg/km2), the density was higher than within the estuarine habitat of Maro River (14.60 kg/km2) and adjacent to the sandy beach at Lampu Satu (14.39 kg/km2). This is due to the influx of fresh water in estuarial habitat, sandy beaches in Lampu Satu and Payum, and mangroves in Yobar, resulting in prawn emigration to areas with higher salinity in Bokem mangroves. It is also thought to be associated with increasing turbidity with a similar pattern in salinity and affecting the density of banana prawns.

Genetic diversity of bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus Lowe, 1841) landed in Palabuhanratu Fishing Port, Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3488-3494. The bigeye thresher shark Alopias superciliosus (Lowe, 1841) is a highly migratory marine shark, widely distributed globally in tropical and temperate seas. The bigeye thresher shark is listed as a Vulnerable/VU species on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Genetics is a substantial essential approach to conservation, management, and sustainability. This study investigates the bigeye thresher shark’s genetic diversity and structure populations A. superciliosus that landed in Palabuhanratu Fishing Port, Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Samples were collected in Palabuhanratu (n=16) and secondary data from the Atlantic Ocean (n=212) and Indian Ocean (n=16) sequences were obtained from GenBank. A total of 16 sequences of A. superciliosus have been amplified using mitochondrial DNA control region (dloop) with 857 bp in size sequenced. The Genetic diversity result showed haplotype diversity value in Palabuhanratu (Hd=0.86667; ?=0.01048) considered a high value. Overall, AMOVA and FST results showed significant differences in population structure between Palabuhanratu, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean with an FST value of 0.04420 (p-value <0.05). Based on the result, an effective strategy is needed to manage A. superciliosus sharks, both with the government and the private sector.

The morpho-physiological and gene expression of East Timor’s local rice plant (Oryza sativa) response to drought and salinity stress. Biodiversitas 24: 4548-4556. East Timor is rich in local rice varieties, such as Silaun, Ime Buci, Me Klan, Me Likan, Me Meak, Me Taek, and Umak Klete. These varieties are tolerant to drought and salinity stress. These superior characteristics emerge as the coping strategy of the rice plants toward environmental conditions such as mountainous, upland planting areas without irrigation networks and coastal regions with high salinity levels. This study determined the tolerance response of East Timor's local rice to drought and salinity stresses. This study was designed in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor, i.e., rice varieties, consisted of 8 varieties, i.e., Silaun (V1), Ime Buci (V2), Me Klan (V3), Me Likan (V4), Me Meak (V5), Me Taek (V6), Umak Klete (V7), and IR-64 (V8) and the second factor was the abiotic stress treatments, namely no treatment or control (P0), 10% PEG treatment (P1), and 150 mM NaCl treatment (P2). The parameters observed were morpho-physiology and biochemical characteristics of the plants. The results showed that the Silaun local rice variety from East Timor was tolerant to drought and salinity, supported by the gene expressions for tolerance to drought and salinity stress.

Sustainable economic analysis and length weight relationship of Bullet Tuna (Auxis rochei) fishery in east area of Bali Strait, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3528-3535. Bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) is a small pelagic fish with an important economic value and is mainly caught by fishermen in the east area of Bali Strait, Indonesia. The high market demand for this fish has increased fishing efforts to achieve maximum catch, and this uncontrolled fishing activity will threaten its sustainability and economic potential. This study was conducted to determine stock status both biologically and economically. The length-weight relationship was calculated by measuring the length and weight of 1,200 samples of fish landed in the Pengambengan Archipelago Fishing Port (AFP) in Jembrana Bali Province from February to March 2020. The calculation of maximum sustainable yield (MSY), maximum economic yield (MEY), and equilibrium of open access (OA) were done by using secondary catch data from 2008 to 2019. Gordon Schaefer’s model analysis found that the values of YMSY and fMSY were 3,314 tonnes year-1 and 3,503 trips year-1, respectively. While the values of YMEY and fMEY were 3,160 tonnes year-1 and 2,750 trips year-1, respectively, which gave a maximum profit of about 1.4 billion USD year-1. In addition, the equilibrium of OA would be achieved when the fishing effort reaches 5,500 trips year-1 and the amount of catch reaches 2,237 tons year-1. The growth pattern of the bullet tuna was isometric, which indicates that the bullet tuna in the east area of Bali Strait has a proportional body shape. The utilization status of bullet tuna (A. rochei) is over-exploited.

Abstract. Benchouala A, Bekdouche F, Si Bachir A. 2023. The update and ecological status of the flora of the Belezma National Park, Algeria. Biodiversitas 24: 6134-6150. The establishment of national parks and nature-protected areas helps to conserve biodiversity. The conservation and enhancement of the floristic diversity of the Belezma National Park (BNP), Algeria which is also designated as biosphere reserve, require precise knowledge of its flora. To that end, the inventory conducted at BNP at the level of forest massifs, preforests, and mountain grasslands enabled us to identify 562 taxa belonging to 342 genera and 93 families, with a predominance of Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Fabaceae. Based on biological spectrum, hemicryptophytes outnumbers other life forms by 44.4%. Zoochory is the most common distribution mode among inventoried species (44.3%). The Mediterranean type dominates the chronological spectrum with proportion of 45.9%. Endemism is represented by 53 species (9.4% of the total flora). According to executive decree No. 12-03 of January 4, 2012, the BNP flora consists of 196 rare species, including 34 endemic species and 26 threatened and protected ones in Algeria. Based on our results, it has been possible to constitute a database of the BNP flora, useful for its protection.
