Abstract. Supartono T, Adhya I, Kosasih D, Wildani W. 2023. Tree species diversity adapted to Pinus merkusii forests in Gunung Ciremai National Park, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4314-4323. One of the challenges faced in rehabilitating pine forests in conservation areas is the limited information on plant species capable of adapting to these ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze the diversity of tree species that grow and adapt to pine forests and the relationship of natural forests with the vegetation characteristics of pine forests. The research was conducted in pine forests bordering natural forests and far from natural forests using the sample plot method. The study recorded 44 species from 27 families of seedlings, 46 species from 21 families of saplings, 25 species from 18 families of poles, and 24 species from 17 families of trees. Accumulation of species from all growth stages recorded 83 species (76 local species and 7 cultivated species) from 39 families. Based on the species accumulation curve, pine forests adjacent to natural forests have more species than those far from natural forests. Individual and family density in pine forests adjacent to natural forests were also higher than the density of these two variables in pine forests far from natural forests. Furthermore, both the pine forest adjacent to the natural forest and that far from the natural forest, each has its own species peculiarities. The results indicate that the existence of natural forests has an important role as a source of biodiversity for the surrounding ecosystem. As an implication of this study, species that can grow to the level of poles and trees can be recommended as rehabilitation plants in the Pinus merkusii Jungh. & de Vriese forests in Gunung Ciremai National Park, Indonesia because pine is not a local species and the allelopathy it releases can reduce plant diversity.

Pakchong under different planting patterns and harvesting ages. Biodiversitas 24: 3439-3447. Napier grass is one of the most popular grasses in tropical and subtropical regions and is a promising forage crop due to its high biomass production, nutritional quality and wide-range adaptability. An optimal management practice is required to maintain production and quality of Napier grass. This experiment examined the morphological responses, forage biomass production, and nutrient biomass of the Napier grass var Thailand (Pakchong) grown under different planting patterns and harvesting ages. The experiment used a completely randomized factorial design 2 x 2, with the first factor was planting pattern (monoculture and intercropping with Indigofera zollingeriana) and the second factor was the harvesting age (50 and 60 days). Each treatment combination was trialed at 5x5 m plot with four replicates. The results showed that planting pattern and harvesting age had significant effect (p<0.05) on tiller numbers, leaves and stem biomass, stem-to-leaves ratio, fresh and dry weight production, and nutrient biomass, except for ash biomass. The highest tiller number was obtained in the intercropping pattern and harvesting age of 50 days. The highest leaves and stem biomass were produced in both planting pattern and harvesting age of 60 days. The fresh and dry weight production and nutrient biomass of Pakchong in intercropping pattern and harvesting of 60 days were higher than those of monoculture cropping. Nonetheless, effect on stem-to-leaves ratio had inconsistent result. The results of this study imply that the best production and nutrient biomass of Napier grass cv. Pakchong were obtained from the grass intercropped with Indigofera and harvesting age of 60 days.

Abstract. Muhtadi A, Leidonald R, Fauzia AD. 2023. Habitat characteristics and biodiversity of nekton in the Alas-Singkil River Basin, Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3673-3689. The Alas-Singkil watershed ecosystem is an essential habitat for the diversity of flora and fauna in the North Sumatra region. This study aims to describe the habitat characteristics and distribution of ichthyofauna in the Alas-Singkil watershed. Observations and data collection were carried out in 2021-2022 in all river segments in the Alas-Singkil watershed, including the downstream, swamp, oxbow lake, middle, upstream, and tributaries. Habitat characteristics in the Alas-Singkil watershed are very diverse. Some swamps in the main river's lower to middle reaches allow the ichthyofauna to migrate laterally. In the middle of the main tributaries (sub-watersheds) to the upstream (most) have habitat characteristics dominated by sedimentary rock substrates with relatively moderate-strong currents. The upper reaches of the main river are dominated by rocky substrates with clear, low-medium flowing waters. During observations in the Alas-Singkil watershed, 99 species of fish from 39 families, 9 species of shrimp, 1 species of freshwater crab, 1 species of freshwater turtle, and 1 species of crocodile were collected. Spotted barb (Barbodes binotatus), Blue panchax (Aplocheilus panchax), and Mahseer fish are fishes often found and widely distributed in the Alas-Singkil watershed. The nekton found in the Alas-Singkil watershed is included in the Least Concern (LC) category at 71% and Data Deficient (DD) at 14%. However, there are 2 species (2%) in the Endangered (EN) category and 6 species (5%) in the Vulnerable (VU) category; Ompok brevirictus and Clarias microspilus are species categorized as Endangered Species.

Short Communication: The existence of Homalomena rubescens(Araceae) in Java, Indonesia based on morphological and molecular evidence. Biodiversitas 24: 3821-3827. Homalomena Schottis a member of Araceae family, with most species originating from Southeast Asia. Due to its stunning heart-shaped leaves and tolerance to shade, H. rubescens (Roxb.) Kunthis frequently used as an ornamental plant and is frequently found in tropical gardens. As an ornamental plant, it can escape cultivation. The existence of H. rubescens in Java has been enigmatic, and the likelihood of misidentification is high because it has morphological characteristics in common with H. pendula (Blume) Bakh.f. This research aims to confirm the presence of H. rubescens in Java, Indonesia based on examination of morphological characters and molecular analysis. An adventive population of Homalomena rubescens was found in the Babakan Siliwangi City Forest, Bandung City, West Java, as a result of a field study in 2022. Materials of the population were then collected and made into specimens in the Herbarium Bandungense for further morphological observations. Additionally, a molecular approach was used to confirm the identity. The collected specimen is unquestionably H. rubescens (Roxb.) Kunth based on morphological and molecular analysis. Therefore, in this paper, we formally announced H. rubescensas a newly naturalized species in Java, Indonesia.

Short Communication: Feeding trial, biological, and demographic parameters of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on several Graminae species (laboratory trial scale). Biodiversitas 24: 3325-3331. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith is a new pest that has entered Indonesia. The ability of the S. frugiperda pest adaptation to several types of graminae plants is important to determine the distribution of potential hosts in the field. The adaptability of S. frugiperda was observed from two parameters, namely biology, and demography, which were tested on three plant types of the Graminae family consisting of hybrida variety corn, Jatiluwih local rice, and sorghum. This research was conducted from May to November 2022 at the Integrated Pest and Disease Management Laboratory (IPMLab), Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University. The observation was made on several bionomic and demographic parameters. Demographic parameters were determined by observing the gross reproduction rate (GRR), net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), generation time (T), doubling time (DT), and observing the fecundity rate of S. frugiperda. The results showed that S. frugiperda biology was best in hybrid corn plants with a short duration of larval life. The survival chances were obtained from daily observations of S. frugiperda, which decreased on day 32 on hybrid corn and sorghum plants. On the other hand, on Jatiluwih local rice plants, imago's survival chance started to decrease at 34 days old. In observing demographic parameters, lower R0 and r values and higher T and DT values ??indicate that hybrid corn plants are the best for S. frugiperda to grow and develop.

Abstract. Botha J, Haussmann NS. 2023. Comparing bird sightings between grassland and marsh habitats at a rehabilitated wetland in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Biodiversitas 24: 3536-3542. Wetlands, including rehabilitated wetlands, form important feeding and nesting sites for a large range of bird species. The restoration of degraded wetlands is therefore important from a bird biodiversity perspective and bird surveys are needed in such systems. However, bird counts typically differ both spatially (e.g., between different habitats within the wetland) and temporally (e.g., between different seasons or times of the day). This study compared bird sightings at a rehabilitated wetland in the Gauteng Province of South Africa between marsh and grassland sections of the wetland and between morning and afternoon sessions. A total of 47 bird species were sighted at the wetland, including a number of species that have been listed as declining. Whereas more species were sighted in the marsh habitats of the wetland than the grassland habitats, differences in the number of sightings between habitats depended on the time of day. Thus, although there were no differences in the number of sightings between morning and afternoon sessions at the marshes, the number of sightings was higher in the afternoons than in the mornings at the grasslands. We therefore, first caution against comparing bird counts, in general, between studies conducted at different times of the day. More importantly, however, our results highlight the importance of not only conserving natural, pristine wetlands but also rehabilitated wetlands to create habitats for declining bird populations in transformed environments such as urban settings.

Abstract. Masithah ED, Islamy RA. 2023. Checklist of freshwater periphytic diatoms in the midstream of Brantas River, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3269-3281. Periphytic diatoms are a group of microalgae that live attached to the surface of the substrate such as rocks, aquatic plants, or other objects in the water. This group has potential as an indicator of environmental quality of water because its existence is influenced by water quality, such as nutrient levels and pollution levels. They are also useful in describing the ecological state, performances, and sustainability of ecosystems because of their ability to measure various environmental parameters and correlate them with diversity, evenness, and richness. This study provides a checklist of freshwater periphytic diatoms in the midstream of Brantas River, East Java, Indonesia. The sampling and identification according to published methods were carried out at the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. This study was undertaken once a week in a month (May 2022) between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. (GMT + 7). Determination of sampling sites based on differences in land use. Sampling site 1 is located at the Kedungkandang Dam, sampling site 2 is located at the Waterfall Amprong tourist area, sampling site 3 is located at the river branch below the Kedungkandang bridge, and sampling site 4 is located in a residential and agricultural area. The total abundance of freshwater periphytic diatom ranges from 938,905 Ind/mm2 - 1,597,758 Ind/mm2. The lowest total abundance is at station 1 with a value of 938,905 Ind/mm2 and consists of 17 genera. The highest total abundance is at station 4 with a value of 1,597,758 Ind/mm2 and consists of 17 genera. In this study, 27 genera were found spread across 3 phylum.

Catimbium (Zingiberaceae) in Vietnam: The first record of Alpinia nobilis and description of a new species Alpinia hoangviet. Biodiversitas 24: 5293-5301. Alpinia subsect. Catimbium is characterized by the inflorescences being a raceme, panicle or spike; bracts usually absent; prominent bracteoles, if present, almost enclosing the flower buds, calyx deeply split unilaterally, deeply concave labellum usually over 3 cm long and yellow-orange marked crimson red, reduced staminodes being subulate to lightly swollen (nearly absent), and anther usually not crested. The revision of subsect. Catimbium in Vietnam is not completed yet. We estimate that the number of this subsect. is roughly 50% of Catimbium species of the World. As a result of the examination of our living specimens collected during 2019-2022, Alpinia nobilis was defined as a new record in southern Vietnam, and Alpinia hoangviet, a new species belonging to subsect. Catimbium (Zingiberaceae: Alpinieae) from Central Vietnam is described. The taxonomic treatment with a description, photographs, distribution, ecology, conservation assessment, and morphological comparison of the new species with their allies are provided. Moreover, a revised key to all species of Alpinia subsect. Catimbium in Vietnam, is included. Alpinia hirsuta and A. latilabris were eliminated from this key. Alpinia hirsuta is considered a member of subsect. Alpinia, whereas the presence of A. latilabris in Vietnam is a misidentification.

Predicting of Komodo dragon's potential prey habitat suitability using MaxEnt in Riung Nature Reserve, Flores East Nusa Tenggara. Biodiversitas 24: 3128-3139. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis Ouwens, 1912) is a big lizard species from the Varanidae family that belongs to the Endangered category (EN) listed on the IUCN red list and Appendix I CITES. This study aimed to reveal the distribution of potential preys Komodo dragons in Rinca Island, Komodo National Park, Manggarai District, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), which was collected using rapid assessment methods. The presences of the Komodo dragon's potential prey come from direct and indirect observation or previous studies. We collected 510 points of Komodo dragon prey presence in Riung, Ngada District, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia from six species, including cattle, but only used 127 points for analysis based on the correlation. Long-tailed macaque, wild boar, civet, Timor deer, feral horses, and cows were the potential prey for komodo in Riung. Most of the points come from cattle, such as cows. On the other hand, we used environmental habitat to represent prey habitats such as elevation, slope, land surface temperature, moisture index, vegetation index, and distance from specific objects such as distance from agriculture, rivers, road, savanna, and settlement. Komodo dragon's potential prey in Riung was distributed in savanna, mangrove, and lowland forest. The result showed three suitable habitats for the Komodo dragon's potential prey dominated by low and moderate-suitability areas.

A new species of Bufoides Pillai and Yazdani 1973 (Amphibia: Bufonidae) from Mizoram (India) and the delimitation of the distribution range of Bufoides meghalayanus (Yazdani & Chanda 1971) to the Khasi hills, Meghalaya (India). Biodiversitas 24: 4617-4627. The Oriental toad genus Bufoides currently comprises two species: Bufoides meghalayanus and B. kempi. Populations of Bufoides from Mizoram were previously considered to be conspecific with Bufoides meghalayanus, although it has been hypothesized that these populations could represent an undescribed species. An uncorrected p-distance at the 16S rDNA gene between the Mizoram population and each of the two congeneric species was 2.74-3.0% and 3.5% for B. meghalayanus and B. kempi respectively. We describe the population from Dampa Tiger Reserve, Mizoram, as new based on molecular from two specimens and morphological data from two adult males and one adult female. We confirm that B. meghalayanus is endemic to the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya and it does not occur in Mizoram. The new species from Mizoram differs from congeneric species by differences in interdigital webbing, coloration, skin tuberculation and the presence of ovoid, tuberculated and depressed parotoid glands. Like other Bufoides species, it is a microhabitat specialist and utilizes streamside rock crevices as refugia, which might make it vulnerable to changes in habitat. The new species is currently only known to occur in Dampa Tiger Reserve and it is probably range-restricted and likely meets the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s criteria for being assessed as Critically Endangered.
