Abstract

Studies on nesting site and feed selection of cuscus in Northern Biak Nature Reserve, Biak Numfor level two district, Papua was conducted from August to September 2003. The result showed 57 species of plant used as cuscus feed sources and 11 species of plants as their nesting site. Parts of the plants being consumed were fruit (76,1%), leaves (13,4%), flowers (9%), and shoot (1,5%). The night watched identified two species of cuscus, namely common cuscus (Phalanger orientalis Pallas), and spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus Desmarest). Direct threat for their conservation were due to hunting pressure by outer conservation area people, specially Biak city people, as just for laugh.Key words: Cuscus, family Phalangeridae, feed sources, nesting site, Northern Biak Nature Reserve

Abstract

Activities that related to feeding behaviour of sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) in captivity at night study on activity that related to feeding behaviour of sugar glider in captivity of small mammals at night has been conducted at the Division of Zoology, Research Center for Biology-LIPI, Bogor. Feeds consisted of passion fruit, banana, guava, papaya, sweet corn, coconut, and bread and were given ad libitum. Four sugar glider consisting of two males and females were place in two cages. One zero sampling method was used to observe daily activity with interval every 15 minutes which was divided in two periods (06.00-11.45 pm and 00.15-06.00 am). Result of behaviour observation showed that feeding activity (13.65%), drinking activity (0.58%), urination activity (4.71%) and defecation activity (5.93%). Other activities are locomotion, grooming, and resting activities 42.59%; 23.54%; and 9.01%. Male and female sugar gliders different in their feeding activities and locomotion.Key words: feeding behaviour, sugar glider, captivity, night.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to know reproduction pattern of “gading starling” (Turdus sp.) in natural habitat, namely Mount Lawu. This research was expected to give accurate information that can be used as base of conservation effort. Research had been done alongside of Cemoro Sewu tracking line. Data was collected at 2600, 2800, 3000, 3100, and 3200 m. asl., in March, April, May, and October 2004. Nesting observation was concerning with nest place at tree, height of ground surface, apart from tracking line, nest materials, size and shape of nest. Egg observation was concerning with the amount of egg per nest, time lay eggs, and amount of infant. Environmental data was concerning with air temperature and humidity. The result indicated that nest location had similar type, i.e. located among ramification encircled by some small stick and shaded by leaves. Height of nest about 0.2-7 m above ground surface. About 90% nest was laid in radius less than 40 m of tracking line. Nest materials predominated by grasses mixtured with dry leaf and small stick. Shape of nest was bowl-like with external diameter 16-19 cm and internal diameter 8-12 cm, and deepness of nest 5-7 cm. Breeding season was around March-April. Shape of egg was oval with mean of length 2.4 cm and diameter 1.5 cm. Egg color was pale blue with small pock of pale brown. Mean of egg amount 2-3 items per nest. Mean of efficacy hatch 1-2 individual per nest, but infant which living on generally only 1 individual. During research noted that lowest temperature 80oC, highest temperature 20oC, and mean of air humidity 70-90%. This research concluded that “gading starling” had typical reproduction behavior, especially in selecting nest location and nest materials.Key words: “gading starling”, Turdus sp., mount Lawu, reproduction.

Abstract

Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) is a vegetable which usually made as a home yard plant for Indonesian people to fulfill their daily needs. This plant has not been produced in the large number by the farmer. So it is hard to find in the market. Lima bean is light by many kind of insect. Inventory, identification and the study of insect taxon to this plant is being done to collect some information about the insect who life in the plant. The research was done in Balitsa experiment garden in the district of Lembang in Bandung regency on November 2003- February 2004, the experiment start at 4 weeks age, at the height of 1260 m over the sea level. The observation was made systematically by absolute method (D-vac macine) and relative method (sweeping net). The research so that there were 26 species of phytofagous insect, 9 species of predator insect, 6 species of parasitoid insect, 4 species of pollinator and 14 species of scavenger insect. According to the research the highest species number was got in the 8th week (3rd sampling), which had 27 variety of species, so the highest diversity was also got in this with 2,113 point. Aphididae and Cicadellidae was the most insect found in roay plant. The research also had high number of species insect so the diversity of insect and evenness become high. A community will have the high stability if it is a long with the high diversity. High evenness in community that has low species dominance and high species number of insect so the high of species richness.Key words: Phaseolus lunatus, diversity, dominance, evenness, richness

Abstract

Study on floristic composition and vegetation has been carried out in natural forest Rimbo Panti, it is one of the remnant natural forest area in West Sumatera. The study was used quadrad method. Three sample permanent plots of 100x100 m were arranged at some altitudes (300 m, 500 m, and 700 m). Enumeration was done to all trees with diameter at breast height down to 5 cm dbh.The result of tree sampling at the location from 1059 individu totally was recorded 199 species, belong to 113 genera and 48 families with total basal area 29.16 m². Whereas the three plots were located at the same hill but if it was saw based on Jaccards index showed that the value relatively low, that is as 58.7%. From the three plots represented that at 300 m alt. which higher people pressure has been invation species of Arenga obtusifolia seriously. Some common species in the forest could be grouping of the big five, among them Paranephelium nitidum, Villebrunea rubescens, Aglaia odoratissima, Drypetes longifolia and Cyathocalyx sumatranus. The classification height of tree was showed that the plots in hilly ecosistem are a lot of trees in layer A (emergent tree) with height reached 50 m tall.Key words: composition, structure, vegetation, natural forest, Rimbo Panti.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know species composition and structure of ex-burned heath forest. Field research was carried out from 23 June to 5 July and 10 to 25 September 2004 on the foot-slope of Semujan Hill, Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan. Ten-sample units (SU) with each size 10 x 10 m are placed based on random sampling method. On each SU, trees with diameter  2 cm cm were identified and the diameter (DBH) and height are recorded. Fourteen tree species were found within a 0.1 ha SU, consisting of 12 genus and 8 families. Tree density is exponentially decreased from trees with small diameter to trees with big diameter.Key words: species composition, forest structure, ex-burned heath forest, Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack) is a member of Verbenaceae family. It has been registered on the National Industrial Timber Estate Programme. Its large-scale propagation was usuallly carried out by vegetative or stem cuttings, therefore it had significant limitation. Due to the low germination rate, so the generative propagation was not yet a prime target. Fruits as well as flower biology remain open so intensive study. Beside the case of low germination rate, the purity test on the whole fruits resulted in an assumption on three categories, i.e. (i) low percentage of fruits containing full seeded segment, (ii) fruits posses a splitting mechanism into separate half-seeded fruit, (iii) morphologically difficult to recognize a full-seeded fruit. Key words: Peronema canescens, seed, viability.

Abstract

Now, diagnosis of cerebral palsy base only on clinical finding without involve the alteration of the neurochemistry cause by cerebral hypoxic, although cerebral palsy is a syndrome cause by cerebral hypoxic; so, the accuracy diagnosis of this disease is very low. The aim of this study is to know the alteration of neurochemistry in cerebral palsy, especially the dopamine, homovanillic acid (HVA), interleukine-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). So, in the future, diagnosis of this disease not only base on clinical finding as above, but must be combine with alteration of the neurochemistry. This study is conducted by observational method as cross-sectional study. Material of this study is venous blood; take by periphery venous blood vessels on median cubital vein at the upper arm. Dopamine analysis by RIA and homovanillic acid (HVA) by HPLC while Interleukine-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) analysis by ELISA. The result of this study show the alteration of dopamine, homovanillic acid (HVA), interleukine-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), in the spastic and dyskinetic type of cerebral palsy. Key words: IL-1β, TNF-α, dopamine, HVA, cerebral palsy

Abstract

The diversity of plant in Indonesia is high, including variety of spices, which have been known by Indonesian society since long time ago. Several very popular plants are clove (Syzygium aromaticum), pepper (Piper nigrum), cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii), and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans). Variety of spices has connection with cultures. In each region and society, they have a special spices in their traditional food. The research was conducted in villages in Pujungan district and other places in East Kalimantan Province and commonly Dayak Kenyah society. The methods used for this study was by interviewing of local society and direct observation in the fields where plant spices occurred. The results indicated that traditional Dayak in East Kalimantan used bekai (Albertisia papuana Becc.), payang aka (Hodgsonia macrocarpa (Bl.) Cogn.), payang kurek (Aleurites moluccana (L.) Willd.), payang kayu (Pangium edule Reinw.), payang lengu (Ricinus communis L.), and payang salap (Sumbaviopsis albicans (Blume) J.J.Sm.) for preparing their food with certain method.Key words: traditional spices, Dayak Kenyah, East Kalimantan.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to know the plant species which used as a natural colorant and its exploiting traditionally by Tribe of Marori Men-Gey. This Research was executed at area of Wasur National Park in Merauke regency. Method used was descriptive method with the direct observation technique in field. Result of research indicate that the natural colorant plant exploited by tribe of Marori Men-Gey as much 7 species included in 6 family that was Vaccinium sp. (Cacinaceae), Morinda citrifolia L. (Rubiaceae), Curcuma domestica Val. (Zingiberaceae), Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae), Ziziplus sp. (Myrtaceae), Gmelina sp. (Verbenaceae) and Zyzygium sp (Myrtaceae). Part of plant exploited cover the root, rhizome, bark, rubber, leaf and fruit. From 7 the colorant plant species, 4 species yielding color yellow that was Vaccinium sp., C. domestica, M. citrifolia and M. indica, 2 species yield the riddling that was Ziziplus sp. and Gmelina sp. and also 1 species yielding black color that was Zyzygium sp.
