Urban green spaces depend on plant composition as well as area, yet district-scale assessments integrating floristic richness, cross-site turnover, and transparent suitability screening remain limited in Indonesia. We inventoried plants at six purposively selected public green spaces in Semarang District, Central Java, in September 2024. Presence records were summarized as taxon and family richness, pairwise composition was compared using the incidence-based Sørensen coefficient, and 194 recorded plant taxa were screened using 23 silvicultural, management, aesthetic, and public-safety criteria. Tree architecture and literature-supported shade and windbreak potential were summarized for the reconciled tree subset. The inventory comprised 194 plant taxa from 62 families; three records were retained above species level (Areca, Croton, and Pteridophyta). Asteraceae (19 taxa), Poaceae (17), and Fabaceae (16) were the richest families. Raw site richness ranged from 33 taxa at GOS Ungaran Barat to 77 at Taman Serasi, and Sørensen similarity ranged from 13.2% to 40.0%, indicating strong compositional differentiation. Suitability totals ranged from 35 to 46; 156 taxa (80.4%) were classified as high and 38 (19.6%) as medium, with no low class. After reconciliation of the architecture dataset, 55 unique tree taxa represented 11 recognized architectural models; 34 were literature-supported shade candidates and 29 windbreak candidates. These are screening results rather than validated performance estimates. Because sites were purposively selected and survey effort, abundance, and site area were not standardized, the study provides a comparative management baseline rather than a district-wide statistical estimate. Management should retain inter-site compositional complementarity and combine screening scores with growth form, local occurrence, safety, and maintenance capacity.

Diversity, market distribution, and price profile of edible plants traded in the Merapi-Merbabu highlands, Central Java, Indonesia. Traditional markets connect crop production, household food demand, and local knowledge, yet their agrobiodiversity is rarely documented with transparent commodity-level data. This study inventoried edible plants traded in Ampel, Cepogo, and Selo markets in the Merapi-Merbabu highlands of Boyolali District, Central Java, Indonesia. In May 2026, 104 purposively selected edible-plant traders (40 in Ampel, 34 in Cepogo, and 30 in Selo) were interviewed, and their commodities were directly observed. Recorded fields included market presence, local name, edible part, use category, cultivation status, seasonal availability, reported supplier origin, and price unit. The audited inventory contained 115 market commodity forms representing 94 recorded taxon entries in 35 families. Selo had the highest snapshot richness (76 taxa; 84 commodity forms), followed by Ampel (58; 62) and Cepogo (35; 41). Twenty-eight taxa occurred in all three markets. Pairwise Sørensen similarity was highest between Ampel and Selo (67.2%), followed by Ampel and Cepogo (62.4%) and Cepogo and Selo (52.3%). Using the archived use-category coding, vegetables (39.1%) and herbs, spices, and seasonings (31.3%) dominated the commodity forms. Most forms were cultivated (85.2%), while 12.2% were semi-cultivated and 2.6% wild-sourced. Boyolali was listed as a supplier origin for 91.3% of commodity entries, although origins were nonexclusive and were not weighted by transaction volume. Listed prices ranged from IDR 1,500 to IDR 93,000 per stated sales unit; 69.6% were at or below IDR 20,000, but direct affordability comparisons are not valid because the units were heterogeneous (82 per kg, 28 per bunch, and five in other units). These findings provide a descriptive baseline of market-available edible-plant diversity during the survey period. Repeated seasonal sampling, standardized market coverage, voucher-supported identification, standardized price units, and quantified commodity flows are needed for stronger ecological, cultural, and economic inference.

Nature-based tourism in mountain landscapes requires systematic ecological evaluation because land-cover change and visitor pressure may progressively influence environmental stability. This study analyzed land-cover dynamics and activity-specific tourism carrying capacity in Tawangmangu Sub-district, Central Java, Indonesia, using five representative tourism sites distributed along an elevational gradient from 1,067 to 1,906 m asl. Land-cover composition was compared between 2015 and 2024 across five classes: vegetation, rice fields, built-up area, bare land, and green open space. Tourism carrying capacity was assessed through Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC), Real Carrying Capacity (RCC), and Effective Carrying Capacity (ECC) using accessible area, visitor space requirement, operational time, ecological and management correction factors, and management capacity. A project-level classification accuracy assessment yielded 87.6% overall accuracy and a kappa coefficient of 0.84; these metrics support broad landscape interpretation but do not imply precision for very small mapped changes. Vegetation remained dominant and increased from 3,121.48 to 3,327.35 ha (+6.59%), rice fields increased by 88.65 ha (+6.93%), green open space declined by 259.33 ha (-14.16%), and built-up area showed a small mapped net increase of 3.68 ha (+0.76%). To ensure numerical closure, overlay-derived transition proportions were reconciled to the independently mapped 2015 and 2024 class totals using iterative proportional fitting. Of the gross green-open-space area assigned to other classes in the reconciled matrix, 64.1% shifted to vegetation and 25.4% to rice fields, whereas only 1.6% shifted to built-up area. Corrected carrying-capacity calculations gave the highest ECC for trekking (816 visitors/day), followed by hiking (693), climbing (672), sightseeing (443), and camping (215). These results indicate a vegetation-dominated landscape with limited mapped net built-up change and strongly activity-dependent visitor-capacity scenarios; they should not be interpreted as evidence that tourism caused the observed land-cover changes. Management implications include vegetation retention, activity-specific visitor regulation, control of concentrated and long-duration use, and repeated spatial and ecological monitoring. The principal contribution is an integrated assessment that links mapped landscape dynamics, uncertainty-aware transition analysis, and activity-specific carrying-capacity scenarios within a single mountain tourism planning framework.

Community forests are fine-grained production landscapes in which planting and harvesting decisions can generate marked differences in woody-plant composition over short distances. We characterized woody and arborescent plant composition, diversity, dominance, and turnover in community forests of Plumbon, Nglebak, and Sepanjang villages, Tawangmangu, Central Java, Indonesia. Field inventories were conducted in October 2024 in fifteen documented 20×20 m plots (five per village; 0.20 ha reported per village). The recoverable dataset was a species-by-village matrix comprising 934 recorded individuals assigned to 33 taxa and 18 families. From this matrix, we recalculated recorded-individual density, observed and rarefied richness, Shannon diversity, Pielou evenness, Hill diversity, Berger-Parker dominance, and pairwise compositional similarity. Sepanjang had the greatest observed richness (25 taxa), rarefied richness at 266 individuals (25.00), Shannon diversity (2.637), Pielou evenness (0.819), and Hill ¹D (13.97), the latter approximately 2.6 times the value for Nglebak (5.30). Plumbon was intermediate (23 taxa; rarefied richness 21.75; Shannon diversity 2.259), whereas Nglebak had the lowest richness (17 taxa; rarefied richness 16.60) and diversity (Shannon 1.668), with Pinus merkusii accounting for 57.7% of recorded individuals. Across villages, P. merkusii, Swietenia macrophylla, and Toona ciliata comprised 52.9% of all individuals. Eleven taxa occurred in all three villages, whereas 12 were recorded in only one village. Pairwise Jaccard similarity ranged from 0.448 to 0.548, indicating appreciable local turnover. These patterns show substantial variation in dominance and compositional breadth among nearby managed forests. Because plot selection was purposive and plot identities were not recoverable, the analysis is descriptive and does not support causal inference about elevation or management. Future studies should use permanent, voucher-supported plots with complete stem-level measurements to evaluate diversity, structure, and carbon dynamics.

Understory vegetation contributes substantially to forest biodiversity and can respond rapidly to environmental conditions, recreational disturbance, and biological invasion. This study characterized understory plant diversity, composition, dominance, and spatial occurrence along the Selo hiking trail in Mount Merbabu National Park, Central Java, Indonesia. Seventy-five 1×1 m quadrats were systematically distributed among three trail zones, comprising five transects and 25 quadrats per zone. Twenty-nine taxa representing herbs, grasses, sedges, ferns, lycophytes, and low shrubs were recorded. Shannon diversity was descriptively similar among zones, with H′ values of 3.270, 3.228, and 3.150 from Basecamp-Post 1 to Post 2-Post 3, respectively, representing a descriptive decline of 0.120. Relative frequency was normalized before calculation of the two-component Importance Value Index (IVI: RD + RF), for which the community total is approximately 200 percentage points. Lophatherum gracile had the highest IVI (13.36), followed by Lepisorus macrosphaerus (12.83), Polystichum braunii (12.46), and Asplenium tenerum (12.25). Ageratina riparia occurred in 78.7% of quadrats and had an IVI of 9.70, supporting its priority for monitoring given independent evidence of its alien and invasive status in Javan mountain ecosystems. Because plot-level abundance matrices, exact archived occupied-quadrat counts for all taxa, vouchers, standardized environmental measurements, and off-trail controls were unavailable, the findings should be interpreted as a descriptive trail-corridor baseline. Repeated, spatially replicated surveys with verified taxonomy and archived plot-level data are recommended.
