Suharno, Tanjung RHR, Sufaati S, Agustini V. 2016. Wati (Piper methysticum L.) medicinal plant: The ethnobiological and ethnomedicinal values of the Marind tribe in Merauke, Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 814-822. Biological resources around neighborhood play important roles in the cultural development of the surrounding communities, including the use of plants. Wati (kava, Piper methysticum) is one of the species that has long been used as a traditional medicine and cultivated by Marind tribal community in the lowlands of Merauke, Papua. The aim of this study is to examine the use and domestication of wati plant by Marind tribe in Papua.Results of the study showed that wati plant has long been used by the Marind tribal community as a medicinal plant with high customary value. Each customary event includes wati plant as a complementary requirement for legitimate activities by the Marind tribe. It is the importance of customary values that led the domestication of wati plant done since 60 years ago on a small scale to eventually develop into plant called as “the Marind people’s gold”. Results of the observation showed that 93.8% of the Marind people have largely recognized wati plant, while 53.3% of the immigrant communities from outside the area recognized it, but only 33.3% knew about its utilization. Although not all indigenous elders cultivate it, they recognize, utilize, and understand the rules of using wati plant in traditional events and as traditional medicine. As traditional medicine, the parts used by Marind people use root (100.0%), stem (96.6%), and leaves (89.7%). For customary events, the most important parts are the whole plant (100.0%), stem (100.0%), leaves (98.3%) and roots (93.1%). Their children even recognize it and know its benefits, but most of them 31.25% only utilize it but are prohibited from participating in its preparation (0.0%). The domestication of this plant is quite unique because it is closed to the public and is still done by a conventional method.

Yetti E, Thontowi A, Yopi. 2016. Polyaromatic hydrocarbon degrading bacteria from the Indonesian Marine Environment.Biodiversitas 17: 857-864. Oil spills are one of the main causes of pollution in marine environments. Oil degrading bacteria play an important role for bioremediation of oil spill in environment. We collected 132 isolates of marine bacteria isolated from several Indonesia marine areas, i.e. Pari Island, Jakarta, Kamal Port, East Java and Cilacap Bay, Central Java. These isolates were screened for capability to degrade polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Selection test were carried out qualitatively using sublimation method and growth assay of the isolates on several PAHs i.e. phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, fluorene, naphtalene, phenotiazine, and pyrene. The fifty-eight isolates indicated in having capability to degrade PAHs, consisted of 25 isolates were positive on naphthalene (nap) and 20 isolates showed ability to grow in phenanthrene (phen) containing media. Further, 38 isolates were selected for dibenzothiophene (dbt) degradation and 25 isolates were positive on fluorene (flr). On the other hand, 23 isolates presented capability to degrade in phenothiazine (ptz) and 15 isolates could grow in media with pyrene (pyr). Based on homology analysis of partial 16S rDNA gene, we obtained six taxonomy classes of PAH degrading bacteria, namely α-Proteobacteria (31%), γ-Proteobacteria (43%), Firmicutes Bacilli (12%), Actinobacteria; Micrococcales (9%), Actinobacteria; Propionibacteriales (2%), and Bacteroidetes; Flavobacteriia (3%). In this research, we obtained diverse PAH degrading bacteria from marine areas.

Analuddin K, Septiana A, Sharma S, Hagihara A. 2016. Crown shape dynamics of dense mangrove Kandelia obovata standsin Manko Wetland, Okinawa Island, Japan. Biodiversitas 17: 865-872. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the crown structure dynamics for dense mangrove stands, and to know the crown shape maintenances and its important role for ensuring the stability and vitality the crowded mangrove forest. The growth parameters of K. obovata Shue, Liu & Yong stands, such as tree height H (m), height at the lowest living leaves HL (m), crown length CL (m) and crown width CW (m), were measured in the summer from 2004 to 2008. The crown shape dynamics were analyzed. The results showed that the HL was significantly increased with increasing H, which suggests thatthe crown changed to be dumpy as the stands grew. However, the CL of young stands increased and then decreased continuously as the stands grew, while the CL of mature stands decreased from 2004 to 2007 and then increased in 2008. Meanwhile, the CL/CW ratio of young stands decreased as the stands grew, while the CL/CW ratio of mature stands decreased and then increased, which imply that dense Kandelia obovata trees might transform their crown shape for reducing of competition for light among trees. Therefore, these resultssuggested that the crown shape of dense mangrove treesare dynamics as developing stands.

Titisari PW, Syamsudin TS, Sjarmidi A. 2016. The utilization of bioresources by local communities at Giam Siak Kecil-BukitBatu Biosphere Reserve, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 873-886. This study aims to assess the use of bioresources of Giam Siak Kecil Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve by the local community. The use of bioresources was characterized by the level of utilization of bioresources in the household economy. It classified into five groups; (i) subsistence group (SG), (ii) supplementary group (SpG), (iii) integrated group (IG), (iv) specialized extraction group (SEG), and (v) specialized cultivation group (SCG). The results showed that the local community used bioresources as main source of livelihood at the core zone and buffer zone. There are 36 species of fish, 17species of non-timber, and 28 species of timber used by local community. Core area and buffer zone are dominated by SEG and SCG. In the core area, the relationship between SEG non-timber and timber is very significant. In buffer zone, the exploitation of fisheries, and timber were dominated by SEG. The correlation between the use of bioresources in the core area showed that the exploitation of nontimber and timber are very high by SEG community.

Abstract. Yanti Y, Astuti FF, Habazar T, Nasution CR. 2017. Screening of rhizobacteria from rhizosphere of healthy chili to control bacterial wilt disease and to promote growth and yield of chili. Biodiversitas 18: 1-9. Bacterial wilt on chili cause by Ralstonia solanacearum. This disease is important, causing plant death and significant yield losses. Biological control is desirable because control with other methods gives variable results. One of the important group of biological agent is the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). This group can control plant pathogens and enhance the growth and yield through direct and indirect mechanisms. The aim of this research was to obtain indigenous rhizobacterial isolates from rhizosphere of healthy chili, which are effective to control bacterial wilt disease and to promote plant growth as well as to increase plant yields. The rhizobacterial isolates were collected from healthy chili rhizosphere in endemic area of bacterial wilt at Banuhampu Sub-district, Agam District, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Screening method of rhizobacterial isolates to control bacterial wilt was based on in planta technique. This technique was consist of three steps, as follow: (i) Screening of 43 rhizobacterial isolates to induce the hypersensitive reaction on Mirabilis jalapa. (ii) Screening of 42 rhizobacterial isolates (from first step) to increase growth of chili seedlings and (iii) Screening of 20 selected rhizobacterial isolates (from second step) to control bacterial wilt on chili. Biodiversitas 17: 847-856. Taraxacum koksaghyz is a diploid, out-crossing, rubber-producing species under development as an alternative natural rubber crop. About 17,650 seed were obtained from progeny of 20 wild collected plants. New populations of plants were developed in Ohio from a random subsample of these seed, which were then open pollinated. In November 2011, these seed were direct seeded in outdoor shallow raised beds and in high tunnel deep raised beds. Plants were harvested from the outdoor beds from July 2012 to July 2013 to provide temporal phenotypic data as plants developed and overwintered. The high tunnel beds were harvested July 2013, and provided data on 11 individual accessions, and their progeny, and on the effect of winter bed heating. Plants were highly variable. Rubber concentration in root tissue was not directly correlated with root, shoot or plant size. Across all growing conditions and developmental stage, the highest rubber yields per plant were found in plants with large roots combined with a large rosette, and an above average rubber concentration. These parameters appeared to segregate independently, and rubber concentration was heritable. Interbreeding plants selected for large root, large rosette and then high rubber concentration, should rapidly move Taraxacum kok-saghyz towards domestication and commercialization.

Biodiversitas 18: 453-457. Availability of vertically or horizontally space on a habitat is needed by birds for their activities. Forest is the habitat that provides vertical space strata more numerous and tend to be inhabited by various species of birds more diverse. Strata of trees canopy provide the resources needed by various species of birds, therefore allowing each canopy strata is utilized by certain bird species. This research aimed to study the use of strata of trees canopy by various species of birds in a tropical forest montana zone, Mount Tilu Nature Reserve, West Java, Indonesia. Opportunistic spot-observation of individual was used to study the activity and the use of space by birds. The results showed that the use of layers of the forest canopy by birds that Emergent: 4 species, Canopy: 29 species, Sub-canopy: 16 species, understorey: 25 species and Ground: 11 species. The use of space position on plants by birds was space on canopy by 8 species, space at the edge of canopy by 33 species, space in canopy by 34 species, space under canopy by 19 species and on the ground by 11 species, with 7 species capable to use 3 space positions on plants. The highest similarity index of canopy layers uses was between canopy and sub canopy layers, with percentage 57.63%. The highest similarity index of position uses was between position of space at the edge of canopy and space in canopy with percentage 53.73%.Keywords: Bird, forest canopy layer, Mount Tilu Nature Reserve, space utilization

Abstract. Hedayati A, Pouladi M, Vazirizadeh A, QadermarziA, Mehdipour N. 2017. Seasonal variations in abundance and diversity of copepods in Mond River estuary, Bushehr, Persian Gulf. Biodiversitas 18: 447-452. The present study was carried out to investigate the abundance and biodiversity of copepods from Mond River (MR) estuary, Bushehr, Persian Gulf during 4 seasons and their relationships with environmental factors. The water samples were collected in mid-season from spring 2012 to winter 2013 for one year period. Copepod samples were collected by using of 140 µm plankton net with 25 cm mouth diameter and vertical towing in all stations. Copepod assemblages were comprised of 4 orders, 13 families and 10 genera. Orders were included; Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Poecilostomatoida, Harpacticoida and Genera were included: Cathocalanus, Acrocalanus, Paracalanus, Subeucalanus, Centropages, Temora, Calanopia, Labidocera, Pontella, Acartia, Oithona, Oncaea, Corycaeus, Microsetella, Microsetella and Euterpina. The order Calanoida with 10 genera was the most diverse and dominant order between Identified orders. The means (±SE) of copepods abundance were recorded in spring (5853.4±1826.19 Individual m-3), in summer (6707.6±1930.15 Ind. m-3), in fall (4393.6±1263.37 Ind. m-3) and in winter (3400±763.98 Ind. m-3), respectively. Simpson and Shannon-Wiener biodiversity indices were obtained in spring (0.87±0.11 and 2.86±0.19), in summer (0.89±0.006 and 3.11±0.15), in fall (0.86±0.13 and 2.66±0.2) and in winter (0.83±0.12 and 2.39±0.15), respectively. The copepod assemblages had most amounts of diversity and abundance at station 5 in all seasons. Pearson correlation showed significant correlation between copepod diversity and abundance with salinity, pH and temperature. Results showed that salinity factor was more effective environmental factor on Simpson (0.01> P and r=0.783) and Shannon-Weiner indices (0.01> P and r=0.727), and copepods abundance (0.01> P and r=0.664) in MR estuary. Abstract. Hailu HW, Sajidan, Pangastuti A, GreinerR. 2017. Isolation, characterization and 18S rDNA sequence analysis of phytase producing fungi from Indonesia, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 18: 10-14. Phytase breaks down the phytate portion of grains and oil seeds; thereby, releasing phosphorus and minerals for animals. The objectives of this research were to screen phytase-producing novel species of fungi; to conduct cultural and phylogenetic characterization; to perform 18S rDNA sequencing and BLAST analysis. Samples of fungi were collected from different sources, cultured on potato dextrose agar and potato dextrose broth. Phytase assay was conducted based on Vanadate-molybdate method. Three isolates with highest enzyme activity were selected for pH and temperature optimization. DNA was extracted by modifying plant DNA extraction and yeast genomic DNA extraction kits. The 18S rDNA gene was amplified and sequenced. The result indicated that optimum temperatures ranged from 60-75oC and the optimum pH for isolates from papaya (Angr), palm bark (Abark) and sugarcane soil field (Asoil) were 4.5, 3.0 and 4.5, respectively. Based on 18S rDNA sequence analysis the phytase producing fungal isolates Angr, Abark and Asoil were identical to Aspergillus niger, Beauveria felina and Nigrosabulum globosum, respectively.Keywords: 18S rDNA, BLAST, fungi, phytase, phylogeny

The estimation of dynamical distribution of domesticated Burgo chicken population in Bengkulu coastal area, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 18: 458-464. As one of the endemic bird species, which inhabits on the west coast of Sumatra and southern Sumatra region, such as Bengkulu Province, Jambi Province and South Sumatra Province, Burgo chicken is recognized as a pet and a socio-economic symbol status for fanciers. The study aimed to monitor the dynamical distribution of male Burgo population domesticated by fanciers in three regencies and a city located along the coastal area of Bengkulu Province. The locations were determined by a purposive sampling method. By using the software in the form of online questionnaire program, enumerators conducted a field survey for 4 weeks in July-August 2016 by a purposive sampling in three regencies and a city, i.e. Bengkulu City, Seluma District, Bengkulu Utara District and Bengkulu Tengah District. The datas obtained in the field were connected and stored in the system provided on a page and could be accessed in a limited basis. Furthermore, the population datas were summarized and analyzed by using a Variance-Mean Ratio (VMR) formula to determine the distribution pattern of domesticated male Burgo chicken. The results showed that in the year of 2016 the highest population of male Burgo chicken (53.29% population) was found in Bengkulu Utara District as many as 89 individuals, while the lowest population (1.19% or 2 individuals) was found in Seluma District. Furthermore, it was also known that the distribution of domesticated male Burgo population in the coastal area of Bengkulu Province could be classified as negative binomial distribution or over-dispersed (VMR>1.0). The results of estimation of dynamical distribution pattern of male Burgo chicken population in year of 2016 in the coastal areas of Bengkulu Province was similar to the distribution pattern of mixed sex Burgo chicken population in Bengkulu Province in year of 2009 which was categorized as negative binomial distribution.
