Short Communication: Cost-benefit analysis of rehabilitation and opening new cultivation land for tangerine cv Madu impacted by volcanic ash fallout of Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 339-345. Indonesian tangerine plants which have diverse varieties possess the adaptability from lowlands to highlands in the tropical region. Some of the tangerine production centers in Indonesia, such as Karo, Mandailing Natal, Dairi, Malang, Batu, and Bali are located in the volcano path which is prone to eruption. The eruption of Mount Sinabung in 2013 and 2014 had caused damage to the local tangerine cv Madu cultivation which was estimated to reach more than 476 billion rupiahs. The eruption affected a cultivation area of 7.202,89 ha and has been predicted to be one of the factors that caused the decline of North Sumatra’s contribution to tangerine production. Therefore, this paper has tried: (i) to analyze the financial feasibility of rehabilitating tangerine cv Madu cultivation located in between 7-10 km radius of the eruption center (zone 1) and in between 5-7 km radius of the eruption center (zone 2), and (ii) to consider the option of opening up a new tangerine cultivation land.The results showed that the BCR for the immediate rehabilitation of zones 1 and 2 were 3.33 and 2, respectively. Thus, the rehabilitation scheme was feasible to be implemented and can reduce the damage and losses suffered by farmers. On the other hand, the opening of new land still takes approximately three years to be productive. The BCRof the option of opening new land within that period of time was 0.47, which is lower compared with that of the rehabilitation of zones 1 and 2 (2.61 and 2.57, respectively).This study was intended as an initial guidance for making decisions and determining the potential benefit to be gained and the losses that can be avoided. This study also gave an overview of the budget that should be prepared. In conclusion, we recommended the farmers to carry out the rehabilitation over opening up new cultivation land.

Gumilar RA, Wijayanto N, Wulandari AS. 2017. Effect of Azadirachta excelsa and Melia azedarach extracts on soybean germination. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 346-351. Azadirachta excelsa and Melia azedarach are potential tree species developed in agroforestry system. Both plants are fast growing species and good for timber use. However, there is an inadequacy on both species due to their allelopathic compound contents. Allelopathic compounds in the plants are distributed from root, stem, leaf, and fruit; which at certain concentrations could inhibit germination, growth, and development of other plants. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of root, leaf, and twig extracts of M. azedarach and A. excelsa on the germination of soybean. Result of this study showed that the root, leaf, and twig extracts of M. azedarach and A. excelsa were able to inhibit the development of soybean. 5 % twig extract of M. azedarach significantly inhibited the germination by 77.75%. Leaf and twig extracts of A. excelsa at 1.25% concentration has shown to provide stimulant effect on the germination of soybean.

Nusantara Bioscience 9: 352-360. Ubi kuning is a local genotype of cassava with high beta carotene content but the development of this genotype is still low because of plant disease susceptibility. Objectives of this study were to robust induce and regenerate somatic embryos of ubi kuning in vitro as well as to define a protocol of cyclic somatic embryogenesis of ubi kuning. Different size of leaf lobes, various concentration of picloram and different light conditions were tested to produce an effective and efficient somatic embryos (SEs).The best response of the induction of embryogenic callus was observed in leaf lobes explant with range size of 1-3 mm and >5mm cultured on induction medium (MS + 4% sucrose + 4 μM CuSO4 + 0.1 mM Glutamine + 0.8% Microagar) supplemented with either 10 or 18 mg/L picloram grown under dark light for 4 weeks. Retransferring embryogenic callus to the same medium supplemented with 16 mg/L picloram gave the advanced development of primary somatic embryos (PSEs) after 70 d grown under both dark and light condition treatments. A positive correlation between globular and cotyledon stages was obtained in all treatments (P≤ 0.01). The highest shoot and root growth (30% and 25%) was achieved in the regeneration of cotyledonary like-tissues cultured on callus embryogenic media (CEM) (MS basal+ 2.5 μM CuSO4 + 3% sucrose + 2.75 g/L phytagel) supplemented with 1.6 mg/L of BAP (6-Benzylaminopurine).

The effect of gelatin hydrolysate from pygostyle of broiler produced by enzymatic hydrolysis process of Aspergillus niger to prophylaxis of osteoporosis white rat. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 361- 366. The pygostyle of the broiler is a cartilage tissue containing collagen, a mucoprotein being a plasma expander. The hydrolysis process of collagen by enzyme can produce gelatin hydrolysate differently compared to that from commercial gelatin because it has an amino acid composition with low average molecular weight. It becomes an advantage because it can be directly absorbed by the digestive tract. In addition, the enzymatic process can be done in short time with the low cost and also environment-friendly approach. This process can be assisted by Aspergillus niger, i.e., safe microorganisms (GRASS). A. niger has a protease enzyme that can digest collagen into gelatin hydrolysate. The enzyme is extracellularly removed so that its utilization does not require high input value expenditure. Gelatin hydrolysate can reduce the disease of osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to know the effect of gelatin hydrolysate produced from chicken bones in the favor of A. niger for increasing the benefit products. The specific targets are to find the amount of gelatin hydrolysate, precisely eliminated osteoporosis of rat (Rattus norvegicus). The experimental research was conducted in the laboratory with using complete randomized design followed by the descriptive analysis with 5 treatment and 5 replication. CCl4 dose 0,14 mL/g BW (P1 as a negative control), Potatoes dextrose Broth (PDB) dose 0,5 mL/g BW (P2 positive control), gelatin hydrolysate dose 0.25; 0.5; 0.75 mL/g BW (P3-P5). The observed parameters were including body weight and histological observation of musculoskeletal tissue in terms of measurement of fiber muscle, cartilage and collagen diameter. The test animal used was male white rat (R. norvegicus) Wistar strain aged 2-3 months with body weight 185-200 g. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan test. The results show that gelatin hydrolyzate as an environmentally friendly product serves as a prevention of immune diseases and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis.

Record of birth weight of Holstein calf can be used as consideration for selection. The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of birth weight based on regular measuring tape compared to Calf scale BW Tape. The records of calf’s birth weight were collected from 1370 female calf birth records from PT Taurus Dairy Farm, Sukabumi. Birth weight measurements were performed by (i) measuring birth weight using Calf scale BW Tape (Nasco, Fort Atkinson, WI); (ii) predicting birth weight with regression based on the circumference of the right front toenails using regular measuring tape a day after the calf was born; (iii) weighing the calf with the scales. The results showed that the predicted birth weight of dairy cow’s calves can be done by regular measuring tape with a polynomial regression equation, Y=(-6288,6)+(1378.8X)-(113.0X2)+(4.1X3)-(0.056X4), which has a deviation 0.5%, and 7.4% using Calfscale BW Tape. Conclusion of this research is that predicting birth weight of dairy cow’s calves using regular measuring tape is more accurate than using Calfscale BW Tape

Windarsih G, Utami DW. 2017. Evaluation of neck blast resistance and agronomical performances on double haploid rice population in greenhouse and endemic field. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 371-377. Blast disease caused by fungal Pyricularia grisea Sacc. is one of the most destructive diseases of rice in the world. The development of blast-resistant rice varieties will be essential to control this disease. This research aimed (i) to compare the resistance response to neck-blast among DH lines from double cross IR54/Parekaligolara//Bio110/Markuti and the differential varieties against three selected Indonesian blast races in greenhouse, (ii) to identify the gene(s) that caused the resistance to neck-blast based on the association between the resistance response and the genotype evaluation using molecular markers linked to Pi1, Pi33, Pib, Pir4 and Pir7 genes, and (iii) to evaluate the resistance response to leaf and neck blast on DH lines in endemic field (Sukabumi) and the agronomical performance of selected DH lines in optimum field in Ciasem of Subang, West Java, Indonesia during December 2013 to March 2014. Eleven double haploid lines from double-crossing IR54/Parekaligolara//Bio110/Markuti, the differential varieties as resistant control and the US2 variety for susceptible control were observed for neck-blast resistance response to three blast races in greenhouse and endemic field (Sukabumi), while the agronomical performances were observed in field of Ciasem-Subang. The results based on the genotyping evaluation, leaf and neck blast resistance, either in greenhouse and endemic location, and the agronomical performance in field showed that 5 selected double haploid lines had leaf and neck blast resistance and good performance on field trial. Thus they are promising for use either for further testing forwarding into releasing variety or used as donor for further blast resistant breeding activities.

Yanto H, Junianto, Rostika R, Andriani Y, Jusadi D. 2017. Different levels of the fermented yellow cornmeal in diets for jelawat, Leptobarbus hoevenii. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 378-384. This research aimed to determine the optimum level of fermented yellow cornmeal in diets to improve the digestive enzyme activity, material digestibility coefficient, growth and feed efficiency for jelawat (Leptobarbus hoevenii Bleeker). The experimental treatments respectively used the fermented yellow cornmeal level of A1 (10%), A2 (20%), A3 (30%), A4 (40%), and two control groups of A5 (10% of unfermented yellow corn meal) and A6 (commercial diet). The experimental diets with the same protein (isonitrogenous) and energy (isocaloric) were given to jelawat with an average size of 32.51±0.21 g per fish. The results showed that α-amylase activity and carbohydrate digestibility value of the fermented yellow cornmeal increases along with the increasing feed levels. Protein and lipid of the body, retention of protein and lipid, daily growth rate and feeding efficiency were significantly different from each treatment (P<0.05). The fermented yellow cornmeal containing a level of 30% in the diet was the best for jelawat with an optimum level of 28.21-32.28% for the growth performance and feed efficiency of jelawat.

Solang M, Lamondo D, Kumaji SS. 2017. Zinc, calcium, protein, lead, mercury, and the sensorics quality of cireng snacks supplemented with blood cockle (Anadara granosa). Nusantara Bioscience 9: 385-391. Blood cockle (Anadara granosa) is a potential nutritious food with high economic value. This study aims at evaluating the level of zinc, calcium, protein, mercury, lead, and the sensorics quality of cireng (traditional Indonesian snack made from fried-tapioca flour dipped into sauces) supplemented with blood cockle. This study used complete randomised design, where the treatment factors consisted of flour made from blood cockles to supplement the flour used in making the cireng snacks. The concentration of the treatment factors were 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test and LSD test. This study shows that blood cockles’ supplementation significantly increases the level of protein (p=0.05), zinc (p=0.031), calcium (p= 0.016), lead (0.000), mercury (p= 0.022) of the cireng snacks. Supplementation of blood cockles has increased the preference toward cireng’s flavor, aroma, and color by 10%, whereas the level of preference toward the texture of cireng which used the blood cockle has increased by 20% compared to cireng product with non-supplemented flour. The level of lead (Pb), and Mercury (Hg) are below the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Supplementation of blood cockles from Gorontalo in the flour used in making the cireng snacks produced snacks with a better nutrition value and safe to consume. Also, the flavor, color, texture, and aroma are acceptable.

Nusantara Bioscience 9: 392-395. Medicinal plants from Saudi Arabia has been used in folk medicine for treatment of many diseases. The present research is on medicinal plants, which are locally available such as Acacia ehrenbergiana (Arabic: Salam) (Fabaceae), Calotropis procera (Arabic: Ausher) (Apocynaceae), Haloxylon salicornicum (Arabic: Rimth) (Amaranthaceae), Panicum turgidum (Arabic: Thuman) (Poaceae), Tamarix arabica (Arabic: Athal) (Tamaricaceae), Rhazya stricta (Arabic: Harmal) (Apocynaceae) Rumex vesicarius (Arabic: Humeid) (Polygonaceae) for antimicrobial activity by agar well diffusion method. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) has been determined by broth micro dilution method. A. ehrenbergiana was active against Klebsiella pneumoniae. R. vesicarius and T. arabica showed antibacterial activity against Proteus vulgaris. C. procera showed a moderate inhibitory activity against the bacterial pathogens tested. H. salicornicum extract was more effective towards Gram-positive bacteria. However, other extracts such as P. turgidum and R. stricta were less active against both Gram-positive and negative bacteria tested. The results will be helpful in discovering new phytochemical components with antibacterial activity that can be used against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.

Setyawan. 2017. Dietary intake of micronutrient and Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) of women in rural Pakistan. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 396-402. Population’s consumption of essential nutrients and defense against diseases is best indicated by the nutritional status of the individual. Asian women as the central player of the family and, therefore, they propagate the ill effects of malnutrition to generation. In this study, nutritional status and micronutrients (dietary minerals and vitamins) intake of rural women in Pakistan were investigated. One district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was selected, out of which, three villages were selected. From each village, 50 rural women were selected for the study. Information about food intake was obtained by a questionnaire. Nutrients intake was obtained from details of food intake in questionnaire, namely, 523 mg/day of calcium; 773 mg/day of phosphorus; 28 mg/day of Iron; 11 mg/day of zinc; 6.61 mg/day of Iodine; 172 R.E./day of Vitamin-A; 21 mg/day of Vitamin-C; 2.79 mg/day of Niacin; 0.31 mg/day of Thiamine; 0.32 mg/day of Riboflavin. The Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) was observed between 19.6 and 52.2 with a mean of 28.54. The study concluded that women’s proportion on consuming mineral and vitamins according to RDA was very small, similarly, the proportion of women in a normal range of BMI was also very small and the curve for BMI suddenly changes direction to the right which confirms that the overweight and obese rural women population was quite common.
