Abstract

The Kenyan economy is market-based with a few state-owned infrastructure enterprises and its external trade systems are largely liberalized. It is the largest economy in the East and Central Africa and its capital city, Nairobi is the hub for financial services, communication and transportation services. The economy is well diversified with vibrant manufacturing, mining, agriculture, forestry, fishing and tourism. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to surpass $85 billion in 2018 or the 69th largest economy in the world. Per capita income in 2018 is estimated at $1,790. Statistica (2017) reports that services sector contributed 45% of GDP followed by agriculture at 32% and industry at 17%. The Kenyan economy has enjoyed both periods of great advances and disheartening downturns. Incidences of poverty and unemployment, meagre foreign exchange earnings (exports of primary product mainly - agro-produce) have resulted in unfavourable balance of payment and low per capita income. It is estimated that about 36% (Awiti, et al., 2018) of Kenya’s population live below the poverty line. While, the overall population growth rate has experienced a decline over the last 2 decades, unemployment continues to increase. As a result, lack of productive employment opportunities has led to a fall of real wages in nearly all the sectors of the economy. Further, the population pressure on agricultural land and the associated decline in individual holdings have resulted in low and decreasing productivity. Under the Vision 2030, it is acknowledged that in order to cope with these challenges, the economy will have to consistently grow at between 8-10% (SDGs more than 7%, Vision 2030 more than 10% annually).

Abstract

The globalization processes took place many times in the socio-economic and cultural development of transnational communities. One of the last such processes has been occurredsince the middle of the last century. The current globalization process is mainly related with the successively progressing integration of financial markets and with the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) and Internet technologies. The socioeconomic, political and business changes, which have been taken place in the global dimension since the middle of the last century, are a source of modification of the currently functioning market structures and global models of financial systems. The liberalization of capital flows, progressing since the 1970s, has been determined by many economic and political factors, including the modification of the international monetary system. The main determinants of economic and information globalization include such processes as liberalization of capital flows, deregulation of international financial markets and progress in the field of ICT. These processes constituted favorable conditions for the increase in the tendency to globalization of the world economy as well as for the internationalization of financial markets. The processes of globalization in the ancient history were of a slightly different nature. In those days the production of goods was dominated by other factors than it is today and economics has not been yet a separate science.

Abstract

From the authors’ initial interviews with the top managers of some small and medium enterprises (SMEs), it was found that the high cost of implementing and maintaining information technology (IT) and information system (IS) was one of obstacles they faced. SMEs that want to use IT for their business processes need to spend some money on the implementation and maintenance of and investment in IT, which is considered too expensive for many of them. The main objective of this study is to examine the adoption of IS and IT strategic planning in SMEs. To meet this objective, a car driving school company, i.e. PT. GAS, was selected as the subject of this study. As a qualitative-based study, it used a descriptive method of analysis with a number of analyses conducted in stages based on a strategic planning framework in IS and IT in accordance with the Ward and Peppard framework. Based on the results, this study concludes that PT GAS could implement IS and IT strategic planning at a low cost by contracting a web-based information system developer with per-user payments.

Abstract

Currently, international behaviors of family businesses (FBs) attract a growing interest of researchers. In an increasingly competitive environment, numerous FBs are forced to expand into foreign markets in search for ways to survive or grow. The article is both theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part it presents theoretical concepts of FBs internationalization, especially determinants for their going international. In empirical part, the study focuses on two particular internationalization determinants: the attitude of family firm towards internationalization and some aspects of the business environment. Methodology used in this study is unique. Authors use a structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore how strong is a causal effect of the attitude to internationalization and of the business environment to internationalize a firm. The results of the survey are presented on the sample of 216 firms including 88 FBs (were investigated with the use of a survey questionnaire).

Abstract

Currently, in the era of information society and the development of information technology, information has become a particularly important element of social and professional functioning of both individual people and complex organizational structures and systems from which the modern world is built. In the context of running any business from the point of view of managing the organization, information can be a valuable commodity for the entrepreneur on a mobile, rapidly changing market. The development of techniques for processing and sharing information via the Internet is determined by many facilities for beneficiaries, customers and people using the information services offered by the Internet. In addition, for entities providing electronic information via the Internet, the possibility of a significant reduction of transaction costs of financial operations and electronic data transfer appears. On the other hand, the development of information technologies functioning on the Internet also involves the risk of loss or theft of information by unauthorized entities. This study describes key assumptions for the developmentand creation of a universal Internet portal offering information services for companies in the MSP sector that offers specialized information services provided via the Internet.

Abstract

Vietnam is in the process of population aging, and there is still a large proportion of the elderly people living in rural areas who continue to work for extra income either for themselves or to support their descendants. However, the elderly people have problems with their health and suitable requirements for finding suitable jobs. The question in this paper is that: how to help the elderly people find suitable jobs. To answer it, this paper did both qualitative and quantitative analyses. Descriptive statistics are used to describe the relationship between factors and employment supports for the elderly people, while a multivariate regression is used to find the determinants of effective employment supports. In addition to secondary data collected from various sources, primary data was obtained from in-depth interviews with some local officials and elderly people in the suburbs of Hanoi to assess related issues in management and implementation of policies. The findings show that the Intergenerational Self-Help Club (ISHC) model has contributed positively to improving the lives of the poor and near poor elderly people by helping them to get jobs through employment supporting activities in many aspects such as trainings in techniques of cultivation, husbandry and production; provision of loans, seeds, fertilizers, and other required inputs for production; and provision of information on suitable jobs that not only to improve their incomes significantly, but also suitable to their health conditions. The model not only contributes to raising living standards but also helps the elderly people to live happily and healthily through diverse activities. This effective and low cost model is well suited to urban, rural, coastal and ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Based on this fact, this paper proposes some solutions to replicate the model for increasing production capital, strengthening trainings of production techniques for the elderly people, diversifying the areas of help in the employment support in the model, mobilizing resources from the community, and mobilizing stakeholder participations to help them have decent jobs.
