Abstract

This study examines the communication strategies employed by counselors in addressing deviant behavior among santri at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid, Al-Mawaddah area. Deviant behavior in this context is not merely a matter of discipline but is closely related to interpersonal communication dynamics within the guidance process. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation of counseling sessions, and documentation. The data were analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that effective counseling is achieved through empathetic, dialogical, and persuasive communication grounded in the principle of bil hikmah. Such strategies foster an open and supportive environment, encourage self-reflection, and enhance santri’s internal awareness to improve their behavior. This study also proposes the “CURHAT” counseling communication model as a systematic framework for guiding behavioral change. The findings highlight the importance of humanistic and participatory communication in ensuring effective counseling practices and offer practical insights for developing Islamic-based counseling approaches in educational settings.

Abstract

This study examines identity negotiation and intercultural adaptation among Dayak and non-Dayak students in a multicultural higher education context, with a particular focus on the role of hidden curriculum in shaping intercultural experiences. While existing studies in intercultural communication have predominantly emphasized formal curriculum and institutional frameworks, limited attention has been given to the role of informal social interactions as a mechanism for developing intercultural competence. Addressing this gap, this study investigates how the hidden curriculum mediates identity negotiation and intercultural adaptation in everyday campus interactions. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data collected via a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 30 students with qualitative data from in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that students demonstrate a generally positive tendency in managing and expressing their cultural identities, while also showing the ability to adapt to culturally diverse environments. More importantly, the study reveals that hidden curriculum functions as a key mechanism through which intercultural values such as tolerance, cooperation, and mutual respect are internalized through daily social interactions. Theoretically, this study contributes to the global intercultural communication literature by positioning hidden curriculum as an integrative dimension that connects identity negotiation and intercultural adaptation. It highlights that intercultural competence is not solely developed through formal educational structures, but is significantly shaped by informal, context-dependent social processes. Practically, the findings provide implications for Islamic higher education institutions in designing communication approaches and curricula that are dialogic, inclusive, and culturally responsive. This study thus offers both contextual insight from an Indonesian multicultural setting and broader theoretical implications for understanding intercultural dynamics in higher education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effects of social presence, interactivity, and attractiveness on the flow experience of YouTube Live viewers in Indonesia. Despite the rapid growth of digital broadcasting, sustaining optimal audience engagement remains a challenge, necessitating further investigation into its communicative determinants. Employing an explanatory quantitative design, data were collected from 100 active viewers via purposive sampling and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) within the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework. The findings indicate that social presence, interactivity, and attractiveness exert a significant positive effect on viewers' flow experience, with streamer attractiveness emerging as the strongest predictor. Ultimately, this study highlights live streaming not merely as an entertainment tool but as a dynamic digital communication space. The results emphasize that fostering two-way communication and a supportive online environment is vital for content creators to sustain audience immersion in new media platforms.

Abstract

This study addresses the critical issue of sexual violence within Islamic boarding schools in Jombang, a region recognized as the “City of Santri.” The research aims to analyze the public relations strategies employed by the Women’s Crisis Center (WCC) Jombang in navigating the complex socio-cultural landscape of these religious institutions to prevent and handle sexual abuse. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with WCC’s advocacy and counseling staff, as well as pesantren leaders, supplemented by documentation of strategic policies. The analysis is framed within the Relationship Management Theory, assessing dimensions of trust, commitment, satisfaction, and control mutuality. The findings reveal that WCC Jombang successfully implements a “cultural negotiation” model through theological framing, recontextualizing gender-based advocacy into Islamic principles such as Mubadalah and Maqashid Syariah. Furthermore, the establishment of participatory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) demonstrates a transition from institutional resistance to collaborative partnership. This research contributes to Islamic communication studies by demonstrating how strategic communication can bridge universal human rights with local religious traditions. It emphasizes that effective advocacy in sensitive environments relies on trust-building, linguistic adaptation, and respect for hierarchical authorities.

Abstract

This study examines the communication strategies employed by Pondok Pesantren Putri Walisongo Cukir Jombang to foster santri creativity through Musabaqah Hifdzil Qur’an (MHQ). While previous studies have focused on tahfidz coaching and tilawah performance, the role of structured communication in developing creative capacities remains underexplored. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation with the kyai, MHQ coach, administrators, and five active students. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, validated through source, technique, and time triangulation. Findings reveal a multi-layered communication strategy including collaborative planning, intensive interpersonal mentoring, sustained training cycles, Islamic value-based motivation, flexible individualized coaching, and institutional coordination with formal schools. These practices cultivate disciplined Qur’anic creativity, reflected in memorization management, Qur’anic recitation exploration, individual talent development, mental resilience, and a supportive learning environment. This study contributes to Islamic communication scholarship by conceptualizing MHQ coaching as a value-based communicative ecosystem. Its implications extend to similar religious education contexts globally, including tahfidz programs in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Abstract

The increasing use of social media has transformed Islamic communication, particularly in delivering women’s fiqh education to Generation Z. This study aims to analyze the educative communication style employed by the Instagram account @dailyhaid in promoting women’s fiqh literacy among Generation Z. Using a qualitative case study with a digital ethnography approach, data were collected through virtual observations of Instagram content, audience interactions, and in-depth interviews with the account founder and eight Generation Z followers. The findings reveal that @dailyhaid applies an educative communication style characterized by empathetic, assertive, and non-judgmental communication. Religious messages are presented through simple language, visual infographics, and interactive features that encourage audience participation and create a psychologically safe learning environment. These communication practices improve followers’ understanding of women’s fiqh, increase emotional comfort when discussing sensitive religious issues, and strengthen confidence in applying Islamic teachings in everyday life. This study contributes to Islamic communication studies by proposing empathetic assertive digital da’wah as a communication model for discussing sensitive women’s fiqh issues through digital media, highlighting the importance of combining clear religious guidance with empathy and participatory communication to enhance religious literacy among Generation Z.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of simple marriage in the TikTok content of young Indonesians which narrates the practice of marriage in Kantor Urusan Agama (KUA) or Office of Religious Affairs As an alternative to the culture of wedding celebrations which tend to be expensive and full of social demands. This phenomenon is important to study because TikTok is not only an entertainment space, but also a space for the production of popular da'wah messages that are close to the experiences of the younger generation. Administratively, marriage contract services at the KUA office on working days and hours are free of charge, while the implementation of marriage outside the KUA is subject to a service fee of IDR 600,000 through the PNBP mechanism. This study uses a qualitative approach with digital phenomenology methods and qualitative content analysis. Data was obtained from 25–30 TikTok content in 2024 that were purposively selected from five accounts of young Indonesians who discussed marriage at KUA, simple marriage, anti-celebration of luxury, and wedding blessings. The results of the study are expected to show that marriage in KUA is constructed as a symbol of simplicity, courage against social prestige, cost efficiency, and a form of digital da'wah that emphasizes the value of sakinah, anti-israf, and household blessings. This research contributes to the study of Islamic communication and broadcasting, especially young people's digital da'wah on social media.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions of Bandar Lampung City residents toward news coverage of the cable car project on the Instagram account @lampung. The development of digital communication technology has transformed social media, particularly Instagram, into a digital public sphere that shapes public opinion regarding local government development policies. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a netnographic method through online observation and screen capture techniques. The data consisted of public comments on three posts related to the cable car project published between February and July 2025, which were classified into positive, negative, and neutral perceptions. The findings indicate that public perception was predominantly negative, accounting for 89.9% of the total comments. In the post with the highest level of interaction (May 23, 2025), there were 4,310 negative comments (93.3%), 45 positive comments (1.0%), and 312 neutral comments (6.7%). Negative perceptions were driven by concerns regarding inappropriate development priorities, potential environmental impacts, lack of project transparency, and low public trust in the government. Meanwhile, positive perceptions emerged from expectations of increased tourism, regional economic growth, and the strengthening of Bandar Lampung City’s image. These findings reinforce the relevance of framing and agenda-setting theories in explaining the dynamics of public opinion on social media and provide practical implications for local government public communication strategies in the digital era.

Abstract

This study analyzes Warkop Kandang Ayam's visual branding strategy in building an aesthetic social space image through Instagram. In the digital media era, visual communication plays a crucial role in shaping brand identity, audience perception, and social interactions in online spaces. Instagram is not only utilized as a promotional platform, but also as a medium for constructing social meaning and visual experiences. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation of Instagram content, including feeds, Reels, captions, and audience interactions. The findings show that Warkop Kandang Ayam consistently applies a warm visual feel, natural photography style, spatial composition, and communicative digital narratives to create a comfortable and aesthetic brand image. Audience interactions through comments, likes, and shares also strengthen the construction of brand identity in the digital communication space. These findings support the theory of Computer-Mediated Communication, particularly the concept of selective self-presentation in building a digital identity through curated visual communication. This study contributes to communication and media studies by explaining how Instagram-based visual branding can transform a local coffee shop into an aesthetic social space in contemporary digital culture. Keywords: Aesthetic social space, Visual branding, Computer-Mediated Communication, Digital communication, Instagram.
