Abstract

This study aims to analyze how Majelis Taklim Darusshofa, an Islamic da'wah group, carries out da'wah, the methods they use, and how they help bring about social change in the city of Medan. As an Islamic da'wah institution operating in an urban environment, Majelis Taklim Darusshofa faces urban dynamics characterized by high population mobility, socio-cultural diversity, and the increasing use of digital technology. This study uses qualitative and descriptive methods, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with administrators and congregants, and documentation of activities taking place at the majelis taklim. The research findings show that Majelis Taklim Darusshofa uses flexible da'wah methods, such as the use of digital media, relevant religious guidance according to the needs of city residents, and strengthening community solidarity in response to the changes brought about by modern urban life. Their da'wah not only spreads Islamic values but also plays a role in shaping the religious character of the city's residents, strengthening social resilience, and directing behavioral changes in a more positive direction. In short, the Majelis Taklim Darusshofa has a strategic function in maintaining the continuity of religious life while also serving as a space for social transformation amidst urban change in Medan.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and patterns of organizational da’wah implemented through internal communication in shaping the character of police personnel, as well as the process of internalizing da’wah values within structural and cultural contexts. The research adopts a qualitative approach grounded in the sociology of da’wah, utilizing Structural Da’wah Theory as the primary analytical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with police personnel, observations of internal communication practices, and an analysis of institutional documents related to character development and organizational values. The findings reveal that organizational da’wah within the police institution operates through structural mechanisms embedded in the command system, regulatory frameworks, and organizational culture, positioning internal communication as a key medium for the internalization of values such as discipline, integrity, responsibility, and public service. The internalization process is facilitated through leadership exemplarity, habituation within institutional routines, and the reinforcement of norms through recurring organizational symbols and practices. Both structural dynamics, including policy consistency and leadership legitimacy, and cultural dynamics, such as individual resistance and diverse value backgrounds, influence the character formation process. This study emphasizes the strategic role of structural da’wah mediated by internal communication in fostering the character of police personnel, which is highly dependent on the alignment between formal organizational structures and internal organizational culture.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how the Akhlak Birrul Walidain values are realized in the digital da'wah content of Ustadz Hilman Fauzi (UHF). Moral degradation and increasing conflict between the younger generation and the older generation in the digital era are exacerbated by the impact of social media. The main focus of this analysis is to examine the representation of Akhlak through three perspective Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA): Text, Discourse Practice, and Sociocultural Practice. The method used is qualitative descriptive analytical CDA, centered on video lectures delivered by UHF. The results show that UHF conveys the concept of birrul walidain with the main approach of 'Relatable Da'wah', a discursive strategy to maintain the relevance of Islamic morality in the public sphere. Textually, this discourse is characterized by pragmatic and non-dogmatic rhetoric, which connects moral obedience with worldly benefits, such as smooth sustenance and inner peace. This research helps redefine religious authority in the digital age by highlighting the shift from dogmatism to 'relatability', providing theoretical contributions to global Islamic communication studies in understanding the negotiation of traditional values on modern platforms

Abstract

The transition from online to face-to-face learning in the post-pandemic era requires significant psychological adjustment for students. This study investigates the impact of Family Communication and Spiritual Quotient (SQ) on the Self-Efficacy of students at Islamic Junior High Schools (Madrasah) in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative approach with a correlational design, data were collected from 66 ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling to represent the post-pandemic cohort. Validated questionnaires were used as instruments, and data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression. The results demonstrate that Family Communication (p=0.001) and Spiritual Quotient (p=0.015) significantly influence student self-efficacy, both partially and simultaneously. Notably, the regression model reveals that these variables collectively contribute 65% to students' academic confidence, indicating a strong predictive power. These findings suggest that the integration of open family communication and high spiritual intelligence serves as a critical psychological buffer against academic anxiety. This study implies that Islamic education stakeholders should prioritize spiritual-based parenting and communication strategies to enhance students' resilience and adaptability in the educational recovery era.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of gender equality in digital media by analyzing Instagram content published by the alternative media account @konde.co. The research addresses the persistent issue of gender inequality in domestic and social relations, particularly how women are positioned and narrated within digital discourse. The objective of this study is to explore how women are represented as subjects, objects, and readers in gender-related content and how such representations shape public understanding of gender justice. Employing a qualitative research design, this study uses Critical Discourse Analysis based on Sara Mills' framework, focusing on subject–object positioning and reader positioning within selected Instagram posts. Data were collected through documentation of visual and textual content, observation, and supporting interviews with followers of the account. The findings reveal that women are predominantly represented as subjects experiencing structural injustice, emotional exploitation, and double workload within marriage, while patriarchal norms and male immaturity are positioned as objects of critique. Furthermore, the content strategically positions readers to empathize with women's experiences and critically reflect on unequal gender relations. This study demonstrates that Instagram functions as a counter-discursive space that promotes gender awareness and social justice, contributing to the development of gender-sensitive communication practices in the context of Islamic communication and digital da'wah.

Abstract

This article discusses the dynamics of the Al-Hasanah Islamic Religious Learning Council (Majelis ta’lim Al-Hasanah) as a religious learning space that plays a vital role in fostering social change among mothers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research examines the activity patterns, social interactions, and the impact of the council on increasing religious knowledge, forming moral values, and strengthening community solidarity. The study results indicate that the Al-Hasanah Islamic Religious Learning Council (Majelis ta’lim Al-Hasanah) functions not only as a means of religious instruction but also as a forum for empowerment that influences the mothers' thinking, attitudes, and social behavior. The resulting social change is evident in the increased participation of women in religious activities, the formation of stronger social networks, and the emergence of a collective awareness to develop more religious and harmonious lifestyles. Thus, the Islamic Religious Learning Council (Majelis ta’lim) plays a strategic role not only in shaping religious identity and strengthening social cohesion at the community level, but also in illustrating women’s religious agency in contemporary Muslim societies, where informal religious spaces function as sites of empowerment, negotiation of gender roles, and reinterpretation of Islamic values in line with broader discussions on Islamic feminism and modern religious subjectivity.

Abstract

The normalization of organizational ethics through short-form digital content has become a strategic issue in contemporary institutional communication, particularly as social media increasingly functions as a space for moral regulation and value transmission. This study examines the representation of organizational culture values in Instagram Reels content published by the @livingintelkom account, focusing on the “Do’s & Don’ts Telkomers Edition.” The research aims to analyze how visual and verbal signs construct meanings related to ethics, discipline, responsibility, and professionalism, and how these meanings operate within the framework of Islamic communication and digital da’wah. Using a qualitative descriptive-interpretative approach, this study employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis to explore denotative, connotative, and ideological meanings embedded in the content. The findings indicate that Instagram Reels function not merely as informational or promotional media, but as symbolic instruments for internalizing organizational culture and shaping ethical work behavior. The values represented, such as integrity, discipline, accountability, and professionalism, are closely aligned with the principles of Islamic communication, particularly da’wah bil ḥāl, where moral messages are conveyed through exemplary practice rather than verbal instruction. Theoretically, this study contributes by integrating semiotics, organizational culture, and Islamic communication studies. Practically, it offers insights for organizations in designing value-based digital communication strategies that reinforce ethical behavior in the digital era.

Abstract

The rise of cancel culture on social media presents a critical challenge to Islamic digital literacy, particularly concerning the ethical principles of communication. This study investigates the erosion of the tabayyun (verification) principle amidst the normalization of public shaming, using the cancel culture phenomenon surrounding Indonesian public figure Gofar Hilman as a case study. Employing a digital netnography approach and thematic analysis, this research examines netizens' discourse, social media interactions, and digital public opinion mobilizations. The findings reveal that digital communities often bypass the verification process (tabayyun) and the ethical mandate of concealing others' faults (satr al-ʿayb), favoring instant moral judgment and collective delegitimization. While cancel culture operates as a modern mechanism for public accountability, it frequently mutates into digital vigilantism that contradicts Islamic communication ethics. This study contributes to the contemporary discourse on digital religion by providing a theoretical framework that bridges social media phenomena with Islamic ethical norms. Ultimately, the research emphasizes the urgent need to revitalize Islamic digital literacy to navigate the complexities of digital public spheres responsibly.

Abstract

The rapid digitalization of religion has transformed Islamic communication, enabling pop culture to function as an alternative spiritual vessel. This study examines the representation of da’wah values in “Gala Bunga Matahari” by Sal Priadi, a viral Indonesian song, to analyze how theological messages are encoded in secular pop music. Employing a qualitative approach with Ferdinand de Saussure’s structural semiotics, the research focuses on the dyadic relationship between signifier (lyrics) and signified (concept) to uncover latent spiritual meanings. Data were collected through close reading and purposive sampling of key verses, then analyzed using syntagmatic and paradigmatic dimensions. The findings reveal that the lyrics construct a coherent system of signs representing Islamic eschatology specifically the concept of Barzakh and the afterlife phrased not through explicit religious jargon but through metaphors of nature (sunflowers) and eternal longing. The song reframes death not as a frightening end, but as a continuity of love. The study concludes that this work transcends mere entertainment, serving as a new theological medium for Gen Z. It offers a non-dogmatic approach to understanding mortality and Rida (acceptance), proving that digital pop culture can effectively bridge the gap between rigid orthodoxy and the spiritual needs of contemporary Muslim youth.

Abstract

This study examines the role and strategies of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers as agents of Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin da’wah in a multicultural public senior high school in East Java, Indonesia. Amid rising identity polarization and social intolerance among adolescents, IRE teachers are increasingly required to move beyond conventional instruction toward communicative and inclusive pedagogical engagement. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and school principals, participatory classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal three interconnected roles enacted by IRE teachers: moral exemplars modeling compassionate conduct, facilitators of interfaith and intercultural dialogue, and integrators of universal Islamic values within formal learning processes. Strategies include dialogical and participatory instruction, community-based social projects, and the incorporation of local cultural wisdom to contextualize religious teachings. While curriculum constraints and social media dynamics present structural challenges, the multicultural school environment functions as a dynamic social laboratory for cultivating everyday practices of tolerance. This study contributes to religious education and Islamic communication scholarship by proposing a humanistic da’wah-based educational model grounded in persuasive, dialogical, and inclusive pedagogy, offering a contextual framework for strengthening religious moderation in pluralistic educational settings.
