Abstract

Recently, the unemployment of college graduates has been greater and greater. Even more, in the recent economic crisis, college graduates face heavy challenges in entering the work place. They have to compete to find out employment which is more and more abundant due to the sharp decrease of our economic investment. Our college graduates at present, and even more in the beginning of the 21st century, will also face neck to neck global competition in finding jobs. Therefore, our colleges have to set up a new orientation in conducting teaching-learning processes so that they are able to be responsible to their stakeholders. Our colleges need to renew their vision, mission, and commitment in carrying out the teaching-learning processes to be able to produce graduates with the vision of job creators.

Abstract

The transactional theory signifies that both the reader and the text play important roles in the formation of meaning. Meaning is produced by continuous transaction between the reader and the text, employing the meaning potential of the text and the reader's experiential reservoir. While the reader is active in selecting and synthesizing the potential in his reservoir, the text contributes to the shaping of his selection and hypotheses, resulting in an interplay between them. Reading and writing are interrelated skills in which the transactional theory is also applicable. The transactional theory provide some implications for the classroom language instruction. Then, an experience in doing journal writing for an English reading class, as one way to put the theory into practice, is presented.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop entry level tests and to identify the level of competency of IKIP Padang freshmen as measured by the test. These tests were used to measure the 1997 IKIP Padang freshmen in the respective majors. The result was not surprising as it was found that the entry level knowledge of the freshmen in the respective subject matter area was quite low. At the second assessment, after one semester study, although the gain scores of those freshmen were statistically significant, the absolute value of increase in the test scores was relatively low. It was hypothetically explained that it may happen due to the fact that the curricula of the subject major is not directly related to pre university learning or that the learning process at IKIP Padang is not effective.
