Abstract

The new status of the English language as an international language (EIL) in the age of globalisation has contributed to a cultural change of focus in English language teaching (ELT). Instead of paying attention to cultural aspects of native English speakers as in traditional English instruction, cultural diversity now plays a key role in the teaching of culture in order to enhance leaners‟ intercultural awareness. To fill this need, this study aims to document EFL learners‟ and teachers‟ attitudes towards local community instruction in which young Thai students learned English whilst being encouraged to take pride in their local culture. In this study, a set of local community-integrated lessons for elementary English education were constructed and subsequently implemented in Grade 4 classes at schools in the northern region of Thailand. Questionnaires were then administered to the students, and semi-structured interviews were also conducted with the school English teachers to elicit their attitudes towards the integrated lessons. The results indicated that young Thai students, along with their English teachers, have highly positive attitudes towards the local community based instruction. This lead to significant implications related to integrating aspects of local cultural identity into ELT practices.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the mindset of Sundanese people in their language expressions examined from psycho-pragmatic aspects. The description is connected to Sundanese language as the reflection of mindset, the cognitive system, and Sundanese people’s way of thinking in Sundanese language expressions. The study applied descriptive method. To collect data, textual technique (literary study), intuitive technique (introspection), and elicitation technique were used. The result of the study shows that Sundanese language phenomenon, which is the reflection of mindset is seen from its sound accord, contradiction, kirata basa (language prediction), abbreviation, and language paradigm. The cognitive system of Sundanese language is related to naming system (of people, of body parts, of places or toponymy), time, numbers, colors, and environment. Sundanese people’s way of thinking refers to outspokenness, subjectivity, state of being substantial, state of being humorous, state of being emotional, indirectness, indistinctness, politeness, sensitivity, and loyalty.

Abstract

Critical literacy (CL) is an area that remains under-researched regardless of the growing acknowledgement on its importance. Previously published works on CL have provided depictions of classroom implementations but they appeared to be lacking a guiding framework thus tended to be haphazard. This study addressed the gap by exploring the implementation of CL using a prototype model that combines the Four Resources Framework (FRF) as a theoretical frame and Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review (SQ3R) as a working model. The study aims at uncovering how CL could be infused into regular EFL Reading class using the model and how students developed their CL. The investigation involved 39 university students in Indonesia. The data were collected using multiple methods:  observation, tests, interview, artifact, and questionnaire. Quantitative and qualitative data were concurrently analyzed by using statistical pack and interactive model, respectively. The study confirmed that questions and materials played key roles in turning a conventional Reading class into a CL class. Having exposed to critical questions, the students  indicated progress in their practice as text users and text analysts. The analysis revealed that the students at differing baselines addressed the four roles differently in terms of the extent and consistency. Students with high proficiency tended to be more consistent in addressing the text user and text analyst roles either individually or as part of the group. In contrast, students with lower proficiency indicated inconsistent engagement with the two roles, particularly in individual work. Generally, the students’ ability to build critical stance to text was also determined by the complexity of the material. The easier the text was comprehended, the more critical the students were toward the text. The study suggests that it be necessary to include explicit teaching and sufficient provision of time in CL teaching to produce an automated critical response to texts.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the hagiographical book of Shaikh ʻAbd al-Qādir al-Jailānī has many versions of translation. One of it is an-Nūr al-burhānī, a Javanese translation by Kyai Muslih al-Marāqī. Unlike other Javanese translations, an-Nūr al-burhānī is not merely a translation but can be considered a new book, in which the translator added some new information and opinion in it. Therefore, the book is interesting to be investigated deeply to find scientific information about the content of the book, the technique, method, and ideology of translation that are adopted and applied by the translator. Using content analysis, the study finds that the book consists of al-Jailānī’s journey of life, his miracles and teachings. The other findings prove that the translator has implemented various techniques of translation such as calque, borrowing, description, amplification-addition, and adaptation techniques. The translator has tried to make the TT (Target Text) easy to be understood by Javanese people, but he tends to apply literal (linguistic transcodification) method rather than interpretative-communicative (translation of the sense) method. As a result, the TT is still influenced by the structure of Arabic as SL (Source Text) and not natural in everyday use of Javanese language. Thus, it can be inferred that the translator more dominantly adopts the ideology of foreignization than domestication. However, what the translator does is more advanced than the other Javanese translators, who usually use only the word for word or literal translation method. This is the uniqueness in translating al-Jailānī’s hagiography or manāqib.

Abstract

This paper reports on the study of the student interpreters’ performance in conference interpreting classes in an Indonesian university when multimodal texts were provided as part of the teaching methods. It aims to answer how multimodal texts can influence interpreting performance among students. A case study design was used to allow an in-depth analysis of the students’ interpreting performance as the phenomenon described (Yin, 2003) using triangulation of data analysis. Observation, interview, and seven transcription analysis from three students were carried out. Observation and interview result shows that the students used visual information such as lips movement, running text on video, moving images, and the speakers’ gestures in their interpreting processes. Moreover, the students said that the existing method of teaching interpreting using multimodal texts is really helpful for them in developing their interpreting skills. Furthermore, transcription analysis also confirms that the student with multimodal strategies (facing the speaker, the screen/the video) performed better during interpreting process. However, a student who faces both did not seem to perform well. The indication is that he was unable to focus, being distracted and nervous. Thus, overall the student interpreters used visual information as part of multimodal communication, in addition to speech, working on the regular mode of listening and speaking during interpreting process, which suggest significant contribution of multimodal texts to better rendition in the target language.

Abstract

Abstract: The inseparability of language and culture has become a rich source of investigation in the field of English Language Teaching. Possible topics may be focused among others, on how culture is packaged and presented, whose culture is disseminated, is there, if any, local culture preserved and disseminated in textbooks which often serve as the main English language learning material. Learning material can often carry cultural content (see McGrath: 2002) which can refer to Source Cultures, Target Culture, or International Target Culture (Cortazzi and Jin 1999). Culture is often about wisdoms and worldview of the country and textbooks can be a good source for students to learn and adopt these wisdoms and worldview, and develop their cultural awareness and identity. Relying on this, the present study investigates whose culture the textbooks investigated disseminate, how culture is disseminated in the textbooks, and whether local culture is also preserved and disseminated. The study is descriptive qualitative in nature. It employs a systematic technique for analyzing message content and message handling. Element of quantitative in the form of how the data are recorded in percentages has also been used. The data for this study are collected from three English textbooks for primary schools entitled “Grow with English”, book four to six published by Erlangga. The data for the study are in the form of written texts and illustrations that may accompany the reading passages. The reading passages are categorized and analyzed based on the framework of Culture in Four Senses proposed by Adaskou, Britten, and Fahsi (1990). The study finds that Target Culture is more salient and disseminated in the textbooks, while Local Culture when present is presented in the form of, among others, names chosen for the characters, places and locations discussed in reading passage, and rituals.   Kata kunci: Culture, Cultural awareness and identity, Four sense of culture, Textbooks.

Abstract

Exposure of environmental issues is essential to prevent mass environmental destructions; therefore, campaigns (posters) should be able to activate the viewers’ contemplation on such issues. The emergence of multimodal texts provides a vast opportunity for semioticians to do their analyses in a more creative manner in current communication processes. Accordingly, this study focuses on the interactive meanings of semiotic resources in posters on environmental campaigns using a multimodal perspective. It examines the contribution of visual and textual resources to raise people’s awareness on the significance of preserving the environment for future generations. This study drew upon analytical tools from SFL, social semiotics, and reading images (Bezemer Kress, 2008; Kress, 2011; Kress Van Leeuwen 1996; Martinec Salway, 2005).  This form of contemplation can be considered to be a part of an essential educational process to build a good character. This study shows that the sample posters are significant to represent and transfer environmental messages through these multimodal resources.

Abstract

A good translation product should be able to reflect the typical characteristics of the target language in terms of its function and structure. One of the structure features that can show that the target text (TT) is free from the influence of the structure of the source language (SL) is its theme structure. As there are both marked and unmarked themes, this would be considered as one of the options to characterize the TT structure. This is a research-based article aimed at finding out the extent of theme markedness in the student translators’ TTs. This research used content analysis design, taking 15 student translators as the participants. They were asked to translate two news item texts from English as the source text (ST) into Bahasa Indonesia as the TT. The data were collected using Translog. Based on the data analysis, it was found that: (i) simple unmarked theme (SUT) was the theme most frequently used in both the ST and the TTs; (ii) Indonesian news item texts were characterized by the frequent use of marked themes. This finding indicates that Indonesian news item text puts more emphasis on how the events presented in the text can be easily caught by the readers as SUT is characterized through the use of short clauses with low lexical density. This study concludes that English and Indonesian news item texts share a small number of similarities as most of their clauses are composed of simple marked themes (SMT) but the similarities are outweighed by a large number of differences.

Abstract

 The study is aimed at describing gender cognition phenomenon in religious discourse in thematic interpretation (tafsir) of the Holy Koran published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Each interpretation book as a written discourse is different from each other due to author’s cognition frame. This study employs a constructive qualitative approach with technical framing analysis. The data are language data (religious text) that are obtainable from thematic interpretation of the Koran of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Data analysis was performed on the following topics: the origins of the creation of men and women, women's leadership, women and inheritance rights, women and ownership, and women's testimony. The research findings show: (1) The lingual and religious discourse containing gender cognition are present in the forms of words, phrases, and sentences. The lingual form of religious discourse is related to the meaning of technical vocabulary that contains appropriate understanding of the discourse topic. (2) Discourse representing gender cognition is found on three topics: women leadership (nation leadership), waris (inheritance), and women’s testimony. In terms of inheritance and women’s testimony, this interpretation refers to conditions that are explicitly stated in the Holy Koran. Meanwhile, this interpretation views leadership of the nation as more worthy to be given to men than women. book looks is more worthy of leadership in the countries was given to men than women.

Abstract

Abstract: In learning a foreign language, learners usually apply certain learning strategies. Similarly, in teaching a foreign language, especially English, teachers also need teaching strategies. Issues related to learners’ learning strategies have been discussed over the years; however, issues related to teachers’ teaching strategies have not been researched thoroughly. Effective teaching strategies are particularly important for teachers who are teaching big classes in multi channel learning system as applied in Bina Nusantara University. This study had two aims: first, to investigate the teachingstrategies employed by Binus English teachers and second, to find out the intersection between teachers and students regarding the teaching strategies employed in the classroom. Using questionnaires for teachers and students, this study examined the frequency of strategy used by students and teachers. The results showed that teachers and students had different perceptions on the strategies/activities that occurred in the classroom. The implications of these results for the teaching/learning situation are discussed.Keywords: multi channel learning, teaching strategies, perception, teachers, students
