Abstract

The increasing prevalence of negative news in digital media has raised concerns about its psychological impacts, particularly on Generation Z (Gen Z), who are deeply immersed in digital technology. Media literacy is believed to play a crucial role in mitigating these impacts by enabling individuals to critically evaluate information. This study explores the influence of media literacy on the reception of negative news among Gen Z in Banda Aceh. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 281 respondents aged 18–26 years through an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate the relationships between exposure to negative news, digital literacy, and information reception. The findings reveal that neither exposure to negative news nor the level of digital literacy significantly affects how Gen Z processes and interprets negative information. Despite the non-significant relationships, the study emphasizes the role of media literacy as a vital skill for Gen Z in critically filtering and assessing digital content. The study highlights the necessity of enhancing media literacy to foster resilience against the psychological risks posed by negative news in the digital ecosystem. By equipping Gen Z with critical thinking skills and digital competencies, individuals can better navigate the overwhelming flow of information in online media. Future research should further investigate the long-term effects of media literacy on psychological well-being and behavioral outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze poverty alleviation strategies for impoverished housewives in Wonokusumo Subdistrict, Surabaya City, using a feminist perspective. Poverty among housewives reflects the feminization of poverty, influenced by gender inequality, patriarchal culture, and limited access to economic opportunities. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that both productive and non-productive impoverished housewives face challenges such as double burdens, limited capital, and socio-economic marginalization. Poverty alleviation strategies include social protection to meet basic needs and empowerment programs based on their potential to enhance capabilities and economic independence. A collaborative approach combining social protection and empowerment effectively alleviates economic burdens and breaks the cycle of intergenerational poverty. This study recommends strategies tailored to the specific needs of housewives to ensure poverty alleviation programs are more targeted and sustainable. Abstract

Indonesia’s pluralistic society, characterized by its diverse religious communities, presents unique opportunities and challenges in fostering interfaith harmony. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), as the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, plays a vital role in bridging religious divides and promoting tolerance. This study examines NU’s contributions in Palembang, a city known for its multicultural dynamics, through Pierre Bourdieu’s framework of social capital, focusing on how trust, social networks, and shared norms are utilized to sustain harmony among diverse groups. This qualitative study employs a descriptive approach, combining primary data from interviews with key informants and secondary data from relevant literature. Informants were selected based on their active involvement in NU’s initiatives in Palembang, and data were analysed using the Miles and Huberman framework, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings highlight six core activities undertaken by NU in fostering interfaith harmony: facilitating annual interfaith dialogues, promoting tolerance through educational institutions, engaging in inclusive social activities, advocating moderate Islamic teachings, influencing public policy, and implementing community empowerment programs. These efforts align with Bourdieu’s components of social capital—trust, social networks, and shared norms—serving as mechanisms to strengthen relationships and mitigate conflicts among religious groups. NU’s strategies demonstrate the dynamic interplay between social capital and societal cohesion. The organization effectively mobilizes trust through collaborative efforts such as mutual cooperation in community projects. Its expansive social networks, encompassing grassroots groups and policymakers, amplify its impact, while shared norms of inclusivity and tolerance form the foundation of its habitus. Despite facing challenges such as resistance from conservative groups and structural inequalities, NU adapts by leveraging digital platforms and forming partnerships to sustain its initiatives.

Abstract

Local customary-based forest management holds significant potential for supporting ecological sustainability and the well-being of surrounding communities. Panglima Uteun, as a customary institution, plays a strategic role in maintaining ecological balance and community welfare. Therefore, it is crucial to revitalize the role of Panglima Uteun as a vital component of social capital in sustainable forest management. This study adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and documentation studies. The research focuses on forest areas in Jantho City, Aceh Besar. Data validity is ensured through triangulation to verify the accuracy of the information. The findings reveal that Panglima Uteun plays a strategic role in forest management, including leading the implementation of forest-related customs, enforcing customary laws, and maintaining ecological balance. However, the existence of Panglima Uteun faces challenges from modernization, market pressures, and limited support for customary institutions. Violations of customary norms, such as illegal logging and unauthorized land clearing, emerge as major issues requiring stronger synergy among local communities, Panglima Uteun, and local governments. This study underscores the importance of revitalizing the role of Panglima Uteun as social capital to support sustainable community-based forest management. The integration of customary norms, institutional networks, and the active participation of local communities can be key to successful forest conservation. Policies that strengthen the position of customary institutions in forest governance are necessary to preserve the ecology, economy, and local culture of Aceh Besar.

Abstract

This study aims to map the network of basic livelihood needs of the Suku Laut community in Penaah Village, Mensemut Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. Basic needs such as food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, and education are critical in determining the quality of life for this small island community. This research employs a qualitative approach using a mini-ethnographic method to explore how the Suku Laut community meets its basic needs and understand its challenges, including environmental degradation, climate change, and modernization. Data were collected through field observations and interviews with traditional leaders, household heads, and women from the Suku Laut community. The findings reveal a high dependency on natural resources, which are increasingly threatened by overexploitation and the impacts of climate change. Access to healthcare and education remains severely limited due to inadequate infrastructure. Social networks play a crucial role in addressing these limitations, including utilizing fish buyer boats (sucheng) as intermediaries to procure essential goods such as food and daily necessities.
