Abstract

Tariqah Naqshabandiyyah in Indonesia comprises several sects, each having a different style and character; one of them is Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah. The Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah sect is a tariqah group with an indigenous Javanese style and a teaching character that accommodates the culture and beliefs of the local community. This paper aims to explore the three realities that have developed among the Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah sect in adapting Javanese culture within its teachings and the meaning contained in each ritual. It includes the reconstruction of theosophical concepts, the development of alternative theosophical teachings according to the locality, and the exploration of the hermeneutical meanings contained in their teachings. The data for the study were generated from the Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah teaching books by reading, recording, and grouping theosophical teachings according to their characteristics and through interviews with members of the congregation regarding the Javanese philosophy. This study reveals that Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah developed the concept of theosophy by giving it an innovative and inclusive meaning to local culture. The Naqshabandiyyah Al Mrikiyah sect also offers an epistemology of the contextual meaning from religious texts with productive hermeneutics. This article recommends a massive study of the existing tariqah orders in Indonesia with a locality perspective to determine the acceptance of Indonesian society towards those tariqah orders. This article contributes to the conception and meaning of tariqah that comes with the prevailing local wisdom style, such as religious rituals performed by many tariqah orders in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Iran–Israel conflict has posed new challenges for Saudi-oriented Salafi educational institutions in Indonesia and tensions between their theological commitments and the broader Muslim solidarity with Palestine. The article examines the reconfiguration of educational ideology and institutional responses among post-Wahhabism madrasahs in Lombok and Banten, Indonesia, in response to these geopolitical developments. The present study is a descriptive qualitative case study based on observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings suggest that the conflict did not fundamentally alter the theological bases of the madrasahs. Rather, it triggered strategic discursive and institutional adjustments. School leaders regularly described the conflict in terms of maṣlaḥah, humanitarian solidarity with Palestine, and social harmony. Salafi doctrinal commitments were sustained. In addition to theological debates, institutions expanded their educational programs, deepened local participation, and broadened public engagement to maintain educational legitimacy amid growing geopolitical polarization. The paper argues that these developments are best understood in terms of post-Wahhabism, which refers not to a new theological doctrine but to the reconfiguration of educational ideology, institutional strategy, and religious authority in response to changing geopolitical and socio-political contexts.

Factors examined include attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and intention. This research used quantitative method with questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. In this study, a total of 52 Muslims in Jayapura who had ever paid Zakah of income become the respondents. This research used multiple linear regressions to analyze the collected data with SPSS 19. After meeting the reliability and validity test, the result showed that subjective norm and perceived behavioral control significantly affected the Muslims’ intention in paying zakah of income, meanwhile attitude did not influence the Jayapura Muslims’ compliance behavior and it was affected significantly by their intention in paying Zakah of income and perceived behavior control. In general, the Theory of Planned Behavior can be used to determine Muslims’ compliance in paying Zakah.

Abstract

The study discusses the dynamics of kiais’ views in response to the government regulations to develop education in pesantren. It is a descriptive qualitative study on the kiais in Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo, Kediri, East Java, Indonesia. Using a theory of social construction of reality, it scrutinizes the regulations that the government issued and the ways the kiais are responding to them. The social construction of the kiais brings a dynamic action in developing the pesantren. Government regulations related to the education in pesantren, as a social reality, are not textually accepted. Rather, the kiais always seek to address these regulations creatively and dynamically as to integrate the education in pesantren with the old tradition and modernity, because of which the needs and development of society can be fulfilled. The knowledge of the kiais influences the actions in developing education in pesantren. Innovative and dynamic views of the kiais lead to the growth of pesantren in multiple dimensions.

Abstract

Abstract

Salafism, which has thrived and exerted its influence among Indonesian Muslims since the second half of the 1980s, is not a monolithic movement. As a reconstituted form of Wahhabism, this movement has fragmented into various camps engaged in debates and competition to establish themselves as true Salafis. Embracing a position of apolitical quietism, the so-called quietists vehemently oppose the jihadists, who advocate the necessity of waging jihad against Islam’s enemies. In their perspective, Muslims should concentrate on their primary task of purifying Muslim beliefs and practices to avoid entanglement in political games. In this context, jihad is prohibited if it leads to physical violence among Muslims themselves. This paper aims to scrutinize the political contexts behind the polemics and explore how the contending parties interpret the main doctrines of Salafism, using them to justify their respective political stances. By utilizing primary sources, documentary data, and interviews with the movement’s followers, this paper argues that, despite doctrinal and ideological nuances, actors’ political interests may play a more decisive role in shaping the polemics, thus blurring their ideological boundaries.

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the values which become the basis for management practice at Gontor. The preliminary observation finds that Gontor management does not follow the mainstream management theory. It has a unique management system, and oftentimes been considered to be not standard. However, Gontor exists and gradually develops with its own unique management system. The study suggests that Gontor has its own standards which are mainly based on Islamic values. Indeed, there are a lot of values, but basically they can be simplified into the five spirits of Pondok Pesantren namely sincerity, simplicity, self reliance, Islamic brotherhood, and freedom. Each one of these spirits becomes a standard of excellence for Gontor management. Hence, vision, long term plans, organization, leadership style, and controlling are designed and practiced based on them. Finally, this paper argues that the sustainability of Gontor depends on how well the management implements these five spirits into practice. In other words, Gontor will always exist and continue to flourish and prosper if it maintains these spirits and will deteriorate by the erosion of them. Abstract

This article examines the experience of Acehnese female victims of sexual violence seeking justice through Qanun Jinayat (Islamic criminal bylaw) in Aceh, Indonesia. The empirical data in this study were collected through in-depth interviews with the victims and families related to the cases of sexual violence. By employing the narrative agency, this article argues that telling the experience of seeking justice is a way female victims of sexual violence express their resistance to the implementation of Qanun Jinayat in Aceh. Regarding this, we will show that Aceh’s Qanun Jinayat, which was originally implemented to eradicate sexual violence, turns out to have limitations in realizing the desired goals. This finding ultimately confirms that the concept of legal pluralism adopted in Aceh, Indonesia, has liminality in facilitating justice for women and other marginalized communities.

Abstract

The use of social media to convey religious texts does not necessarily mean that there is a contextualization of the understanding of the religious context according to contemporary reasoning. This study argues that hadiths concerning women’s subordination have generated more textual and discriminatory interpretations when represented on social media, especially Instagram. Employing critical discourse analysis (CDA) and a representational framework, this study examines three main points: (a) the hadith representation of women in classical literature, (b) the form of subordinate representation of women on Instagram, (c) the consequent identity formation of women through hadith interpretations on Instagram discourses. This study reveals that social media functions as a double-edged sword in contemporary Islamic discourse. It ostensibly provides opportunities for progressive reinterpretations of religious texts, but, on the other hand, the findings indicate it has paradoxically become a powerful ideological weapon to maintain the status quo of patriarchal norms through subordination towards women. Consequently, the reductive portrayals of women’s roles on Instagram still exist even though modern reality has significantly changed compared to 15 centuries ago when the Prophet Muhammad lived. Through discursive framing and algorithmic amplification, Instagram increasingly contributes to the legitimization of discrimination against women across both the private and public spheres.
