Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review the deradicalization strategy in religion through strengthening the understanding of Pancasila in the context of Islamic Education at Islamic boarding madrasahs in Central Java. This study involved Madrasah-Pesantren/Madrasahs-Islamic Boarding schools (MP) in the North Coast (Pantura) Region of Central Java, including Madrasah Aliyah (MA) al-Wathoniyah Semarang, MA Qudsiyyah Kudus, MA al-Hidayah Kudus, MA al-Hidayat Lasem Rembang, and MA al-Anwar Sarang Rembang. By employing a qualitative approach through interview and observation data collection methods, this study revealed that the government of the Republic of Indonesia's religious deradicalization program requires support from Islamic boarding schools. One of them is the conceptual support that makes the program effective, referring to deradicalization through Islamic Education (PAI). This deradicalization process is carried out through strengthening Pancasila values integrated through PAI. It is based on the style of radicalism, especially among Muslims who question the national principle's validity of Pancasila in the name of Islam. Pancasila is considered a secular ideology and even kafir because it did not depart from God's revelation. Indeed, this judgment is baseless because the first principle is Belief in the Almighty God, reflecting the value of tawhid. With the existence of tawhid in Pancasila, this national principle is religious in nature, even comprising tawhid. This religious dimension introduction is carried out through Islamic Education in Madrasah-Pesantren (MP) to protect students (santri) and students from the radicalism virus.

Abstract

There are currently more than 3.45 million Muslims in the United States, for whom new typologies of Islamic spaces are developing to meet their needs. One of these spaces is an organizational typology referred to as a third space.  Islamic third spaces are novel socio-religious environments that seek to support the needs of young U.S. Muslims. In the current exploratory cross-sectional study, I adopt an environmental psychology lens to explore how attachment to third spaces impacts dual identification. Data gathered from 110 U.S. Muslim third-space attendees show a significant positive relationship between participants’ place attachment to third spaces and their dual identification. Demographic variables, including gender, race or ethnicity, immigration status, and Islamic religious status, did not impact dual identification. In conclusion, developing and maintaining significant places for Muslims, such as third spaces, is one way to promote a well-integrated U.S.-Muslim identity.

Abstract

Abstract                                                                                                   In Indonesia, bitcoin is a form of digital currency (e-money) and means of payment transactions that have been used by some communities. It is necessary to get attention, especially from Bank Indonesia. Other than that, the supervision that was once fully done by the central bank of Bank Indonesia, is now taken over by OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan). Thus, Bank Indonesia only has the authority to regulate and control the circulation of currency only. Since some of the tasks and authorities of Bank Indonesia were taken over by OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan), many things have not been covered, such as the new phenomenon in the field of finance in terms of capital, investment, currency circulation, and others. In addition there is no legal umbrella against bitcoin, which is increasingly widespread transaction using bitcoin done in e-commerce transactions. So in terms of security also need to be questioned, therefore there needs to be regulation and supervision specifically against bitcoin, and society will not feel harmed. When viewed in the perspective of Islamic law, that relating to the issuance of money as a means of transactions in a country, is a matter protected by general rules in Islamic law. Therefore, the issuance of money and the determination of the amount is matters relating to the benefit of the people. Another aspect to consider in the use of bitcoin is whether from the side of madharat is greater or benefits taken if used as currency and tool transactions, even as a commodity though. So the focus in this research is the use of bitcoin as currency and transaction tool by using approach and study of Islamic law.

Abstract

This paper discusses the views of Partai Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) on democracy and its implementation in real politics in Malaysian context. I analyze PAS views on the relationship between Islam and democracy, their style in recruiting members and leaders of the party to demonstrate that this Islamic political party follows democratic rules. PAS believes that democracy and Islamic values are compatible and it is a good political tool for an Islamic party like PAS to reach its political goals.  By examining the process of recruitment of members and leaders of PAS as the cases, the paper shows that commitment of PAS in toning up democracy in Malaysia could be viewed in their style of recruiting their leaders. The PAS has exercised democratic rules in their internal party activities, particularly in the way they recruit their members and how they chose their leaders.

Abstract

Abstract

This anthropological research investigates Muslim-Christian conflict and the rise of Laskar Jihad that affects Islamophobia in Central Sulawesi. Islamophobia appeared on the global political surface after the 9/11 tragedy, taking the world's attention to Muslim society. However, we cannot argue that, in recent decades, the media have depicted Muslim culture as backward, uneducated, bad, radical, terrorist, or with all negative images. Even so, Islam is often associated as a religion that supports violence and war. These illustrations depict Islamophobia as a global political threat. However, Islamophobia occurs not only in Western countries, but also in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. This research explores the phenomenon of Islamophobia in Indonesia. The study focuses primarily on the island of Sulawesi, where the rise of Laskar Jihad organizations, Muslim-Christian conflict, violent extremism, and Islamophobia are interrelated. This research is based on an anthropological approach for which the author conducted fieldwork in Central Sulawesi. Data collection was also taken from online media that can be understood as digital anthropology. In addition, this research paper examines the theory of prejudice. Prejudice is discussed based on facts, but also from perceptions, actions, language, symbols, and the media, to individuals or groups. The research findings show that the first element of Islamophobia in Central Sulawesi is associated with the Muslim-Christian dispute in the late 1990s. Islamophobia's second element relates to the transnational Islamic movement and the rise of Laskar Jihad after reformation.

Abstract

This  study  examines  the  extent  to  which  Islamic  humanitarianism  can counterbalance  Western-dominated  norms  and  structures  of  global  aid. Combining  decolonial  theory  with  norm  localization,  it  develops  the  concept  of localized  universalism  to  explain  how  Islamic  humanitarian  actors  articulate independently  grounded  universal  ethical  commitments  while  selectively engaging  with  international  humanitarian  standards.  The  study  employs  a qualitative  document  and  literature  review  of  scholarly  works  published primarily  between  2000  and  2025,  including  literature,  organizational  reports, zakat  statistics,  regulations,  and  fatwas  on  Islamic  humanitarian  actors  in Indonesia  and  beyond.  It  also  includes  illustrative  cases  involving Muhammadiyah,  Nahdlatul  Ulama,  Islamic  Relief  Worldwide,  Dompet Dhuafa, BAZNAS, mosque-based philanthropy, and the UNHCR Refugee Zakat Fund. The findings  reveal  three  interrelated  patterns.  First,  Islamic  actors  re-ground humanitarian values in Islamic traditions, such as humanity, solidarity, and non- discrimination,  in  Islamic ethical  and  jurisprudential  traditions,  exemplified  by Muhammadiyah’s  al-Ma’un theology  and  Fikih  Kebencanaan.  Second,  Islamic social finance—including zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf— provides substantial and  recurrent  humanitarian  resources,  although  these  remain  predominantly domestically  oriented  and  under-realized  relative  to  their  estimated  potential. Third, authority rarely shifts to Muslim communities; legitimacy is conferred by certifiers,  UNHCR,  and  the  Indonesian  state.  The  article  terms  this  pattern “localized  universalism”:  epistemically  rich  but  structurally  limited decolonization.  These  findings  contribute  to  debates  on  decolonizing humanitarianism  by  shifting  attention  from  the  localization  of  aid  delivery toward  the  deeper  question  of  who  possesses  the  authority  to  define humanitarian universality.

Abstract

Islam as an unperceived religion from an essentialist perpective, beause it is transhistorical. The reality shows that the expression of Islam in one particular geographical context is a result of the interplays between Islamic teachings and local culture. This is a qualitative studyon Minangkabau customs and culture, with data collected by reviewing documents, both in the form of books, and articles. In addition, interviews were conducted with a number of Minang figures, and added to the Minang residents experiences. The results showed that the Minangkabau customs and culture had acculturated with Islam since it was introduced to the Minang region around the 8th century AD. Before its introduction, there were customs and cultures based on their habits. This acculturation occurs peacefully, therefore, the decisions of the traditional leaders do not cause turmoil and resistance from adat stakeholders in the region. Acculturation of Minang customs and culture with Islam takes the form of synthetism, while adat adapts to its teachings. When Islam with Minang customs and culture blend into one, changes occur in three forms. Firstly, when the custom is not in accordance with the Islamic teachings, it is adjusted, as illustrated in the Minang customary philosophy which reads, “Adat basandi alua jo patuik, alua jo patuik basandi bana, bana badiri sandirinyo” changed into “Adat basandi Syara’, Syara’ basandi Kitabullah”. Secondly, both customs and culture, which are in line with Islam remain preserved, such as the principle of deliberation (musyawarah) and consensus (mufakat). Thirdly, it led to the promulgation of Islam in a new culture that has not existed before, such as the Khatam Al-Qur’an ceremony for children.
