Abstract

Trauma, meaning wound, is a common phenomenon in our modern world and this phenomenon is represented in many works of literature in various ways. One of the examples of literary work that attempts to represent trauma is Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro, a 1914 Japanese novel written by one of the most famous Japanese author. This research aims to answer the question of how trauma shape a person’s identity in the translated version of Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro (1957). This research focuses on the character development of one of the main character in the story, Sensei. Employing Caruth’s (1995) trauma theory as a the theoretical framework, this study uses descriptive qualitative as the approach. The result finds that Sensei’s identity is shaped by two major traumatic event in his life, the betrayal of his uncle and the death of his close friend. In response to the two tragic events, Sensei constructs an identity that are characterized by attributing cynical attitude, attaching guilt, and casting fear. Because he feels he is haunted by his trauma, he decided to commit suicide in order to be free. The way Sensei constructs his identity in response to his traumatic past is also a reflection of a postmodern notion identity in which a person’s identity is never absolute and is prone to change. Keywords: Identity, trauma, Japanese literature.

Abstract

This study entitled Kodi Lee in Online Media: How is Autism Represented? aims to reveal the representation of Kodi Lee, a savant autistic young man, in three different online media, namely Good Housekeeping US, The Wrap, and HuffPost. This study uses Halliday’s (1994) Systematic Functional Linguistic (SFL) focuses on Transitivity Analysis (TA) as the main analytical tool. Other theories uses to support the findings are representation (Hall, 1997), media representation (Orgad, 2012) and autism representation which includes savant autism (Prochnow, 2014) and mothering and autism (Stevenson, 2008). The findings show that material processes are dominantly used on the three websites. Material processes are used to describe Kodi’s talents. Meanwhile, from the analysis of verbal processes, it is evident that Kodi still cannot voice himself, even though he has some talents to be proud of, which on the same time contradicts with Clarke’s (2011) study. This study also finds that representations of Kodi are different on each media. Good Housekeeping US represents Kodi as a talented person with disabilities who stands behind his mother shadow. The Wrap represents Kodi as an extraordinary disabled young man who has a very strong bond with his mother, while HuffPost represents Kodi as a talented human being despite his disabilities. These results show despite Kodi’s claim as a savant autistic young man, the media still emphasize his disabilities to represent him. Keywords: autism, representation, savant autism, transitivity analysis

Abstract

Cyberbullying has gained more concern among linguists and law enforcers due to its negative impacts on its victim. Aside from that, bullies can also face serious legal consequences. This study attempts to identify legal consequences of the cyberbullies’ language use as evidenced on Twitter by identifying the attitudinal systems used by the bullies. This followed a qualitative design involving categorizing data and examining the relationship between the categories. The data were 52 tweets, which consisted of bullying elements towards non-specific persons (students from an institution) from Twitter. The data were then categorized into Martin and White’s (2005) attitudinal system. The analysis found the languages of attitudes used by the bullies including 1) judgement (69%), 2) appreciation (18%), and 3) affect (13%). The findings of this study were discussed under the Laws of Information and Electronic Transaction, and viewed from forensic linguistic perspective. Keywords: Cyberbullying, Bullies, Twitter, Attitudes, Forensic Linguistics.

Abstract

YouTube is one of the most influential video-based platforms nowadays. This platform has become the source of living for many people, especially the youth. Apparently, one of the considerations for people to click a video on YouTube is its attractive headline. Therefore this study aims to investigate the interpersonal meaning of the headlines through the use of speech function and its typicality and the realization of the speech function across different types of headline. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design with the help of simple descriptive statistics. The data include 240 headlines of the highest, in-between, and the lowest views videos collected from ||Superwoman|| YouTube channel. These headlines are categorized based on the speech function and its typicality proposed by Halliday (1994) to see the realization of interpersonal meaning. The data are also classified by using the theory of headline types by Maslen (2010). It is found that there are three initiating speech functions realized in the headlines: statement, command, and question. The dominant speech function is statement which is realized typically in a declarative mood. It also shows that statement that arouses curiosity is the most desirable type of headline. The findings indicate equal status between the YouTuber and the viewers through the typical realization of statement, and also signify that viewers are most likely to click a video with a headline that arouses their curiosity. Consequently, the videos can get vast numbers of viewers. Keywords: Headline types, Interpersonal meaning, Speech function, Typicality, YouTube

The data were obtained by downloading three YouTube videos that contained the compilation video of slips of the tongue by the singer and her interview video with Sarah Sechan Talk Show as well as Narasi Entertainment’s Podcast. The transcriptions of the three videos became the source of the data. The study uses the theory from Garrett (1975) about the process of the articulatory program and Clark and Clark (1977) about types of slips of the tongue and factors of speech error. This study also uses the theory from Carroll (1986) about other types of slips of the tongue which are addition and deletion to analyze the data. This study has revealed that this Indonesian female singer mostly made mistakes in the process of phonetic segments as many as 33 times. It was also found that substitution is the dominant type of slips of the tongue that used in the video, as many as 22 times. Abstract

This study is a transitivity analysis of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960). This study aims to investigate representation of a colored man named Tom Robinson through the types of process related to Tom Robinson. By using qualitative research, the research used the theory of Transitivity proposed by Halliday (1994). The data sources were in the form of eighteen clauses that specifically represent Tom Robinson and were sorted by concordance software Antconc 3.8.1. The findings of the research showed that there are four processes found in the clauses related to the character. Material process is the most frequent process (50%) followed by Relational process (27%) which are divided into two: Attributive Relational process (22%) and Identifying Relational Process (5%), Mental process (17%), and Verbal process (7%) are the second lowest and least frequent type in this research. The result of the research indicates that Tom Robinson as one of the people of color in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is represented as a man who experienced social injustice. Keywords: Representation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Ideational Meaning, Transitivity
