Abstract

This study seeks to examine the realization of strategies of refusal to direct requests by Sundanese and Minangnese students. This study also examines the contribution of power relation, social distance, and rank of imposition to the realization of the refusal strategies. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data used in the present study were gathered from a Discourse Completion test (DCT) that was distributed to 10 Sundanese and 10 Minangnese respondents. The data were analyzed by using Takahashi and Beebe’s (1987) classifications of refusal. The findings show that 13 (out of 16) refusal strategies of Takahashi and Beebe (1987) are evidenced in this study. It is found that from all the 13 strategies, statement of regret and excuse, reason, explanation are the two most frequently used strategies. It is also found that there is no substantial difference in terms of the strategies employed by both Sundanese and Minangnese students; however, some differences can be noted especially with regard to the use of mother tongue, in which Sundanese respondents mixed Indonesian with Sundanese more often than the Minangnese. The study also reveals that less power of the requesters, less social distance between the refusers and requesters, and lower rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the excuse, reason, explanation strategy as their first choice. Meanwhile, more power of the requesters, larger social distance between the refusers and requesters, and higher rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the statement of regret strategyKeywords: Refusal, Sundanese, Minangnese, power, distance, imposition

Abstract

Masculinity in film is constructed differently, mirroring its construction in the real life. The purpose of the study is to examine the construction of masculinity in The Little Rascals (1994) directed by Penelope Spheeris. Using qualitative method, the study employs theory of masculinity (Connell, 2005), film theory (Heintz Stracey, 2006), and theory of characterization (Boggs Petrie, 2008). The findings show that masculinity in the film is constructed through dialogues and shots. There are two prominent types of masculinity, hegemonic masculinity which is upheld by the main characters Spanky and his gang and complicit masculinity which is upheld by Alfalfa. However, both Spanky and Alfalfa move from one type of masculinity to another; thus strengthening the argument that masculinity construction in the film is fluid. Keywords: Masculinity, construction, hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinityKeywords: Masculinity, construction, hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinity

Abstract

This study explores some important issues, namely the occurrences of code switching types, languages used, and the reasons why the respondents switch their language in communicating in Twitter. The study involved the students of English Education Department who had already signed up as Twitter users as the respondents. In this study, the data were the tweets used by the respondents and the responses of the questionnaires. To identify code switching types in the tweets, Poplack’s framework (1980) was applied. Moreover, the theories proposed by Hoffman (1991) and Saville-Troike (1986) were used as the basis of interpretation to investigate the reasons why the respondents switch their language in Twitter. The data (selected tweets and questionnaires) were analyzed by several steps, namely identifying the occurrences of code switching from the tweets, classifying the code switching in the form of tables, quantifying the frequency and the percentage of code switching, and analyzing and discussing the data obtained. The results show that there are three types of code switching, seven language combinations and six reasons of the use of code switching in Twitter. In terms of the type, intra-sentential switching tends to be the most frequent type of code switching (56.67%). In relation to language combinations used in the tweets, Indonesian-English is likely to be the most frequent language combination (73.33%). Moreover, in relation to the reason, real lexical need may be considered as the main reason to switch the language in Twitter (60%). Keywords: Code Switching, Twitter, Twitter Users, Tweets

Abstract

Martin (2007) argues that limitation is one component which makes Harry Potter story work. Limitation is a part of magic laws that were investigated in this research, along with the functions of the fantasy and how these elements work to construct a story in The Lightning Thief, a fantasy novel written by Riordan (2005). Magic Law theory as proposed by Nikolajeva (1988) and Tolkien’s function of fantasy (1966) were used as the framework theory. Textual analysis was used to find out the answers to the research questions. This research finds that the kinds of magic laws used in The Lightning Thief are limitation and consistency while recovery and escape are two functions of fantasy served in the novel. The magic laws and functions of fantasy construct the story to be interesting, believable, and related to human life by creating the element of wonder, creating the element of surprise, maintaining the balance between primary and secondary world, composing the inner logic of the story, and conveying some interesting issues.. Keywords: The Lightning Thief, Fantasy Novel, Magic Laws, Functions of Fantasy

The present study investigates the appearance of Thematic Progression and Lexicogrammatical Features in English song lyrics written by English and Indonesian songwriters by applying theories of Systemic Functional Grammar by using Hallidays Lexicogrammatical Features and Danes’ Thematic Progression framework. This study discovers that the thematic Progression patterns and Lexicogrammatical features found in the data are similar. This study revealed that in English song lyrics written by both Indonesian and English songwriters, the appearance of the most frequent Thematic Progression patterns and lexicogrammatical Features are similar. The data showed that Multiple Theme Progression appears as the most frequent Thematic Progression pattern. The data also showed the use of Personal Pronoun appears as the most frequent Lexicogrammatical feature. These findings suggested that the texts are coherent and, by the dominant use of personal pronoun ‘I’ and ‘you’, the songwriters tend to speak directly to their listeners so it could be easily understood by the readers/listeners. Keywords: Theme, Thematic Progression, Lexicogrammatical Features, song lyrics

Abstract

The novel entitled The War of the Worlds has several issues which is interesting to be studied. One of them is the issue of power which becomes the main focus of the present study. Since the novel portrays the war between humans and aliens (specifically, the Martians’ invasion of the Earthlings) and arguments among humans (the Earthlings) illustrate the exercise of power, the bases of power proposed by Raven (2008) are applied in this study to examine the power-related phenomena. Furthermore, the power exercise is analyzed by focusing on conflicts among characters, particularly the conflicts between the Martians and the Earthlings as well as the conflicts among the Earthlings. The findings of the study discovered that the distinctive way of exercising power, particularly in the conflicts, is through coercion and information. This shows that the way power is exercised in the novel is comprehended to be the way text shows its bias towards logical and empirical way of thinking. Keywords: power exercise, conflicts, coercion, information, textual power

Abstract

The study entitled Women’s Language Features Used by Indonesian Female Bloggers aims to investigate women’s language features, the frequency of the features, and the possible reasons of using the features by female bloggers. The data were in the form of written text of Blogspot.com, published from October 2011 to September 2012, which consists of several bloggers’ activities such as their routines, business, fashion, and special events. The main theory of Robin Lakoff (1975) was used to analyze the data. Lakoff (1975) proposed ten women’s language features but this study only adopted nine features in the form of written text namely lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, empty adjectives, precise color terms, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. The findings reveal that there were ninety-seven postings which can be categorized into eight features. However, intensifiers tend to be the most frequent feature used by the female bloggers (34.92%), followed by empty ajectives (5.71%), and the least is avoidance of strong swear words (0.27%). Moreover, regarding the reasons by using the features is most respondents claimed that they use those features because they tend to reflect uncertainty and reflect women’s lack of confidence in conversation. In contrast, only few of respondents who stated that they use those features because women have higher level of vocabularies than men.Keyword: Women’s language features; Blog
