Abstract

In order to explore the presentation of antihero in Markus Zusak’s I am the Messenger, this study uses Roberts and Jacobs’ (2004) theory on methods of characterization and Brombert’s (1999) and Wilson’s (2013) characteristics of antihero. With the aim of achieving an understanding of the characterization of antihero, this study employs a qualitative method which focuses on the main character’s characteristics, Ed Kennedy. The characteristics of antihero shown through four elements of characterization: environment, appearance, actions, and speech. According to his environment, Ed is characterized as a teenager who has an unhappy life because he belongs to the low economic status. Second, his appearance does not present that he is a protagonist in the novel. Third, he acts like a hero, especially in helping the other characters. Finally, the other characters perceive that he is weak and doubtful. On the other hand, he is an obedient and empathetic person. From the analysis, it can be concluded that he has two different characteristics which are good and bad. Some certain events were constructing him to be a better person. In the beginning of the story, he is only a weak and doubtful person. As the story goes by, he changes; he enforces to feel the fear and empathy. Keywords: antihero; character; characterization

Abstract

This historical linguistic study aims to investigate what types of sound changes that happen in the process of linguistic borrowing from English to Esperanto and what factors triggered the changes. It is found that there are 195 English words that are borrowed according to the pronunciation, and there are four categories of sound change that is found: phonological, morphological, orthographically influenced, and abnormal sound change. Regarding the types of sound change, it is found that there are eleven sound changes: sound addition for morphological sound change (34%), vowel raising (13.1%), vowel lowering (7.7%), shortening (6.8%), monophthongization (6.2%), orthographically influenced sound change (4%), vowel raising and fronting (3.5%), fortition (2.7%), deletion (2.6%), vowel raising and backing (1.5%), and vowel lowering and backing (1.2%). It is discovered that the phonological sound changes happen to fulfill the phonological aspects of Esperanto, morphological sound changes occur due to the morphological rules of Esperanto, orthographically influenced sound changes happen to conform to the Esperanto phonological inventory and to maintain the original English spelling for easier word recognition, and abnormal sound change occur to fulfill phonological and morphological aspects of Esperanto with some influences from the orthography. Keywords: historical linguistics, sound change, loanwords, Esperanto, Esperanto studies

Abstract

This paper entitled “Women’s Portrayals in the Comic Books (A Visual Grammar of the Heroines’ Portrayals in the Selected Comic Books Published by DC Comics and Marvel)” is aimed at investigating how women, especially heroines are portrayed in the comic books and what the portrayals signify. The study is a qualitative study using the visual grammar theory proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) and the systemic functional linguistics theory proposed by Halliday (2004). The data are in the form of four online comics published by DC Comics and Marvel. The study finds that heroines are portrayed in negative and positive ways. The negative ways portray the heroines as sex symbols, the ones who sexually stimulate men’s attention in their appearance, greedy, fragile (especially when the heroines play their character as alter ego). While, the positive ways portray the heroines as strong, brave, smart and impressive ones. The findings also show that no matter how strong the heroines, they are still in the subjection. Keywords: Portrayal, Comic Books, Heroines, Visual Grammar

Abstract

The study is aimed to compare the official and non-official Indonesian subtitles that are used in Zootopia movie as well as to analyze, investigate, and elaborate the strategies employed by the official and non-official subtitles. Employing a qualitative approach and comparative method, this study uses Gottlieb’s (1992) ten subtitling strategies to find the similarities and differences in the official and non-official Indonesian subtitles. In term of similarities, the result shows that there are 511 utterances that are translated by using similar strategies and 531 utterances using different strategies. The differences can be found when the utterances contain a word that refers to an object, cultural words, proper names, and insult words. Additionally, the differences also occur in the degree of formality, careful use of punctuation, precision of translation, and subjectivity of the translation. Keywords: Audiovisual Translation (AVT), Subtitle and Subtitling, Subtitling Strategies

Abstract

Batman franchise is one of the most watched franchises in the history of cinema (Box Office Mojo, 2016). There are at least nine film adaptations of Batman, not including the direct-to-video films, animated films, and television series. There are more than one version of the characters which are consumed by the audience. This study seeks to investigate the portrayals of the Batman villain character Joker in two Batman films entitled Batman (Burton, 1989) and The Dark Knight (Nolan, 2008). Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study employs Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) framework of characterization in films as its analytical tool. Some of Bordwell and Thompson’s (2010) cinematic techniques (i.e., mise-en-scene, camera shot and angle, and sound) are used to strengthen the analysis. The analyses of the portrayals are used to find the signification. The analyses show that the portrayals of Joker have similar traits. However, the portrayals also possess significant differences. Joker in Batman seems to depict human’s corrupted traits whereas Joker in The Dark Knight implies that he is an embodiment of terror. The character Joker is portrayed differently in two different films in order to signify different fears which are circulated in two different time periods. This study reveals that characters based on the same source can signify different representations of fear within the society due to the different time periods the films were produced. Keywords: Batman, character and characterization, cinematic techniques, Joker

Abstract

This research paper entitled Language Attitudes towards Written ‘Alay’ Variety in Facebook Interaction aims to reveal the use of the alay variety in Facebook media and the attitudes developed by users and ex-users of the variety. The study employs a descriptive method to describe and interpret the data. The study reveals that the realization of written alay variety in Facebook covers two broad categories, namely spelling and writing that involves a mix of capitals and punctuations. The spelling modifications in written alay variety were found to be in four different cases, spelling shift, spelling addition, spelling deletion, contraction, and irregular spelling modification. Related to language attitudes toward the written alay variety, users and ex-users develop different attitudes towards the use of alay variety. Users tend to have more neutral attitudes with the use of alay variety, they develop more positive attitudes towards the variety. In contrast, most ex-users react negatively towards the use of alay variety as they consider the variety to have a low prestige or status and is not a proper variety to use. Keywords: alay, alay variety, spelling, modification, language attitudes

Abstract

The present study explores exchanges in a court trial based on the theory of cooperative principle (CP). This study aims to examine how a defendant violates the cooperative principle during an investigation in a trial. In addition, this study also seeks to analyze the perlocutionary effect of the violation on the prosecutors. The data comprise transcripts of conversations between a defendant and seven prosecutors with regard to the cyanide court case in the 21st court session. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using Grice’s (1975) theory of cooperative principle. Austin’s (1962) account of the perlocutionary act is also used to examine the effect of the violation. The findings show that the defendant violated the cooperative principle through violation of (1) the quality maxim alone and (2) the quality maxim aided with a breach of other maxims (quantity, relation or manner).Violations of the quality maxim alone were committed by giving negative answers and showing lack of memory. Meanwhile, violations of the quality maxim aided with the breach of other maxims were committed by giving irrelevant aspects of information and conveying convoluted answers. With regard to perlocutionary effect on the prosecutors, the violations gave rise to certain responses from the prosecutors, i.e. repeating the questions, revealing the facts, complaining about the defendant’s answers, and directing the defendant to admit the truth. The perlocutionary effect indicates that although violations of the cooperative principle might help the defendant to hide the truth in her answers, the prosecutors did not accept the answers easily. The prosecutors appeared to base their responses more on the information that they had gained previously. Keywords: cyanide court case, cooperative principle, violation, perlocutionary act
