Abstract

This study examines the relationship between narrative structure (tight and loose), English proficiency (Intermediate and Higher Intermediate) and the distributions of mid-pause of English students at Indonesia University of Education. This study employs a quantitative approach. Data were collected from narrating performance of 40 participants from English students at Indonesia University of Education. The performances were transcribed and the mid-pauses produced were analyzed by using paired t-test and independent t-test. The data analysis was based on cognitive information processing perspective (Schmidt, 1990). There are two important findings in this study. First, the findings show that L2 learners produce more mid-pauses when performing a tight structured narrative. Second, it is found that the performance of Higher Intermediate group is not affected by narrative structure. The findings may be useful for teacher and language tester as a consideration in choosing narrative task features to optimize the performance of learners. Keywords: mid-pause, tight structured narrative, loose structured narrative, cognitive perspective

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how high school students organize their ideas in their Exposition texts, and to what extent their Exposition texts are consistent with argumentative language features in terms of Thematic Progression, based on the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (e.g. Danes, 1974; Eggins, 2004). The data were nine high school students’ Exposition texts from low, middle, and high level of achievement. The result shows that the students organize their ideas in three ways of Thematic Progression, including the Zig-zag Pattern or Simple Linear Theme Progression (SLP), the Re-iteration Pattern or Constant Theme Progression (CTP), and the Multiple Theme Pattern or Derived Theme Progression (DTP). In terms of Thematic Progression consistency, some texts from middle and high achievers are consistent with the argumentative language features, since they employed SLP than CTP and used DTP. Some students still need guidance to create good pieces of writing. Keywords: Thematic Progression, Exposition text, Senior High School

Abstract

The present study examines the observance and non-observance of the maxims and investigates the perlocutionary effect of Sherlock Holmes’ utterances. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the conversations. The data are in the form of conversations between the characters in Sherlock TV series episode 1 entitled A Study in Pink. Using Grice’s cooperative principle, the study reveals that character Sherlock Holmes is dominantly performing non-observance of the maxims in his utterances. The occurrences of non-observance of the maxims in characters’ utterances are flouting maxim, violating maxim, and opting out of maxim. The study also shows that flouting maxim of quantity and relation are dominantly occurred in Sherlock Holmes’ utterances. By performing floating maxim of quantity and relation, Sherlock Holmes tends to withhold the information. Generating non-observance of the maxims affects to the interlocutors, in other word is the perlocutionary effects. It is found that the types of perlocutionary acts of Sherlock Holmes’ utterances are various. The occurrence of perlocutionary acts are irritating, amazing, annoying, insulting, impressing, distracting, amusing and prompting. In addition, the findings also indicate that the perlocutionary acts occur depending on each character, whether they are always giving positive or negative feedback to Sherlock Holme’s utterances. Keywords: Grice’s cooperative principle, observance of maxims, non-observance of maxims, types of non-observance of the maxims, perlocutionary acts, Sherlock TV series

Abstract

The research entitled “Gender Influence on Slang Used by Teenagers in their Daily Conversation at School” aims to investigate types of slang and gender influence on the use of slang among teenagers. Data were collected from observation, questionnaire, and interview. To analyze the data, the theories proposed by Potter (1975) and Kahn Illson (1985) were implemented to identify the types of slang among teenagers, whereas Diekman and Eagly’s (2000) theory was applied to investigate the gender influence on the use of slang among them. The findings show that there were 12 types of slang used by male and female teenagers, such as back, centre, clipping or shortening, blending, compounding, nonsense reduplication, acronyms, loan or borrowing, onomatopoeia, substitution, and two types of slang categorized by Willis (1964). The results of analysis also reveal that gender may affect the use of slang. It can be seen from the total number that slang used by male teenagers (54,3%) tend to be higher than females (45,7%). Therefore, it can be concluded that male teenagers use slang more than females and it can also be understood that the tendency of males to use standard language is to show their machismo. Keywords: Teenagers, Language, Slang, Gender, Sociolinguistics.

Abstract

The present research seeks to examine the representation of the Indonesian Tax Amnesty Program in the Jakarta Post online news articles in terms of macrostructure analysis as well as unveil the underlying ideology of the Jakarta Post with regard to the issue. This research employs a qualitative method by relying on the sociocognitive approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (van Dijk, 2009) to conduct the semantic macrostructure analysis and interpret the results. The data used in this research include ten articles from the Jakarta Post. Through the application of macrorules analysis, there are ten macropropositions derived from the selected articles. The macropropositions are, then, analysed to further examine the representation. It is revealed that the Indonesian Tax Amnesty Program is mostly represented positively in the Jakarta Post. Out of the ten macropropositions, 80% indicate positive representation and 20% indicate neutral representation of the issue. No negative representation is found. Furthermore, it is found that in terms of ideology, the Jakarta Post tends to adhere to capitalism. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, macrostructures, news articles, representation, ideology, tax amnesty program

Abstract

This research paper is aimed to uncover the ways in which the western author, Alan Drew, represents the East culture in the novel Gardens of Water (2003). The research employs qualitative descriptive study with the content analysis approach. The analysis of the novel is done within the theoretical framework of Orientalism proposed by Edward Said (1978). The results of the analysis show that the representation of non-western people and cultures confirms orientalist point of view that puts the East and the West in a binary opposition and represents the East as inferior to the West. The study also proves that the author uses typical stereotyping in representing the East in the novel such as untrustworthy, rude, barbaric and traditional and also exposes the issue of patriarchy which is usually pinned into the East Culture. This representation of the East leads to the justification of the West imperialism and colonization toward the East. Keywords : Orientalism, orientalist, binary opposition, representation of the East, West Imperialism

Abstract

The present study entitled Hero Construction Narrative in A Bug’s Life, The Film aims to investigate the film narrative of hero construction. The study employs a descriptive qualitative study with textual analysis approach. The present study adopted Hourihan’s (1997) theory as its major theoretical framework and the language of film theory (Heintz and Stracey, 2006). The study found that the hero construction in the film is presented through three phases there are the initiation phase, the conflict phase and the resolution phase. These phases are also analyzed through the language of the film. They are crafted through the pattern of cause and effect where film characters become the agent of causality. These characters are put in binary opposition to construct the hero in the narrative which is mediated through the language of film, such as camera shots, camera movement and mise en scène. The uses of binary opposition support the delivery of the didactic message in the film, since animation films that focus on hero’s journey are often directed to children. Keywords: Film, Animation Film, Narrative Cinema, Hero Construction, Children’s Literature

The data were taken from an Indonesian talk show entitled “Ini Talk Show”. The duration of the talk show is 14 minutes. This research mainly uses qualitative method in collecting and analyzing the data. However, a simple quantitative measure in the form of categorical measurement is also used to count the frequency of occurrence of particular data. The types and functions of interruption were analyzed using Ferguson (1977) theory and French Local (1983) theory. Moreover, politeness strategies that are used by the speakers were analyzed using Brown Levinson (1987) theory. Lastly, the possible factors that affect speakers to interrupt were analyzed following Wardhaugh (1985). The study found that most of the interruptions are initiated by female speakers. In mitigating to avoid the hearer’s face, the interrupters mostly use positive politeness strategies.
