Abstract

This study investigates the patterns of request strategies used by Sundanese males and females when communicating with the same and cross-gender. It also explores the possible factors affecting the use of request by the participants. Applying a descriptive qualitative method, the participants for this research were 5 Sundanese females and 5 Sundanese males, aged 19-23. The participants were students from a public university in northern Bandung which were purposely selected. To analyze the data, this study employed request strategies theory proposed by Blum-kulka and Olshtain (1984) and factors affecting the request strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) and Han (2013). The results show that Sundanese males and females used direct strategy more than conventionally indirect and non-conventionally indirect strategy. Sundanese people use direct strategy when requesting to friends both to same and cross-gender, while conventionally indirect strategy used to request to strangers. These findings suggest that the gender of the interlocutors is not taken into consideration for determining the request strategy, but the speakers pay attention more to age and the distance with the interlocutors. This is due to cultural characteristics of Sundanese that applies undak usuk basa. Keywords: speech act of request, request strategies, gender, Sundanese

Abstract

Notions about death and grieving have been part of human life for as long as humans have lived. They can be found in many forms such as art, music and literature including children’s literature. The Thing About Jellyfish (2015), a novel for children which is written by Ali Benjamin, tells about a grieving child who is in the transitional phase of being a child to become a teenager. This research attempts to discover the portrayal of grieving experienced by the child main character in the novel. As a study of text, this research uses qualitative method and it employs Kübler-Ross and Kessler theory of five stages of grief (2014) for analysis and Schroth’s theoretical framework in analyzing portrayal of death, dying and grieving in children’s literature (2017) to support the discussion. The findings reveal that grieving is portrayed through the construction of five stages of grief which may be unintentionally employed by the author. From the stages, it is revealed that grieving is also portrayed as a difficult and painful process for the child main character which ends with acceptance and the importance of moving on from grief. Abstract

This study was aimed to reveal jargon formation in FJB Kaskus postings and investigate context of situation underlying the use of jargons. The data used in this research is in the form of online threads or postings from Kaskus FJB Forum. To analyze the formation of the jargons, the theories used were from Bauer (1983), Yule (1996), O'Grady Guzman (1996), and Stageberg (2000), while Hyme’s (1974) theory is used to analyze the context of situation. The result shows that there are 51 jargons with the total of 365 occurrences that can be divided into 10 types of jargon formation: abbreviation, clipping, clipped compounds, borrowing, coinage, derivation (prefix, sufix, prefix+afix), reduplication, and antonomasia. Those jargons were used in various situations depending on the context. Most of them are used in greetings, offerings, and in giving notice with various tone in formal and informal registers. Keywords: Jargon, Jargon Formation, Context Of Situation, Online Trading, Kaskus

Abstract

The present study examines adult-children relations in a picture book entitled “Bad Bad Bunny Trouble” by Hans Wilhelm from an Orientalist perspective. The focuses of the study are the portrayal of children in the picture book and the meanings made from the portrayal. Two main theoretical frameworks were used in this study. The first theoretical framework is Orientalism from Said (2003). The second theoretical framework is visual analysis theory from Nodelman (1988) which was used to analyze the pictures. Children are portrayed as the Other while Adults are the Self. The findings indicate that as the Other, children are marginalized and adults take center stage. As the center, adults take charge and expect children to fulfill the adults’ expectation to prepare the children for adulthood. From Orientalism perspective, the adults-children relation in the picture book is the representation of the binary opposition of Self and Other in Orientalism. Keywords: Orientalism, Self, Other, visual analysis, picture book

Abstract

The study aims to measure arguments’ strength of the 2012 the United States’ presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, in their latest presidential debate. The researcher selected 41 arguments from the debate transcription, based on the completeness requirement of the primary elements of Toulmin’s Argumentation Model (1958), such as claim, ground and warrants. The data are analyzed through the three stages of analysis, namely cogency analysis, soundness analysis, and strength level analysis. Based on the data analysis, three qualifications are found: strong argument, weak argument and very weak argument. The analysis shows that Barrack Obama is the winner of the latest U.S presidential debate. Obama won the debate because his strong arguments’ frequency is higher than Romney’s strong argument in the debate. Furthermore, most of Obama’s arguments, either strong or weak, are constructed in the form of deductive arguments. As the nature of deductive argument, which guarantees the cogency and the validity of its conclusion, Obama’s arguments in the latest presidential debate 2012 are mostly cogent and valid. Keywords: Argument Strength, Cogency Analysis, Soundness Analysis, Strength Level Analysis

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the common characteristics of Indonesian pronunciation deviations made by undergraduate college students from Batak Angkola and to observe the factors that contribute to the interference. The participants are two female Batak Angkola undergraduate students who have been living in Bandung for four years and are active speakers of Bahasa Indonesia and Batak Angkola-Mandailing language. To compare the results, four other participants who come from Jakarta and Bandung, have the same age and gender, and are not active speakers of any Indonesian local languages are also recruited. Based on the pilot test conducted prior to the research, the phonemes that are investigated are /e/, /ə/ and plosives (/b/, /d/, /g/, /k/, /t/, /p/). The data are collected through two types of assessment, which are a reading task, and pronunciation tests in the form of three word lists. By using software Praat, the deviations analysis and a further acoustic phonetic analysis of vowel and consonant duration are conducted. In general, there are two types of pronunciations deviations made by the participants: devoicing and allophonic shift that occurs between /ə/ into /e/ and /e/ into /ə/. The factors that contribute to the interference are speaker bilingualism background, language distant, anxiety, empathy and group solidarity. Keywords: Language interference, pronunciations, acoustic phonetics, Batak Angkola-Mandailing language.

Abstract

The present study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of slips of the ear by English Education Department students. Data were taken from 10 students from different semester and have minimum 500 TOEFL score. Data were analyzed qualitatively supported by descriptive quantification and based on Bond’s (2005) slips of the ear theories. The findings show that the errors occur in lexical level and syntactical levels. The factors of the occurrences of slips of the ear can be because of the lack of lexical knowledge, the accent and dialect, the unfamiliarity with the words, or difficulties in segmenting utterances. The result of this study shows that the errors which occur most in all categories is in syntactical level, which is ill-formed utterances. Furthermore, this study supports the previous studies of slips of the ear proposed by Kusumarasdyati (2005) who states that when the listeners misperceive the utterances, they will add, omit, or substitute the utterances. Keywords: slips of the ear, music, lyrics, lexical, syntax

Abstract

Kelas Internasional, an Indonesian TV series depicting the dynamics of a class consisting of students of different nationalities, has a Nigerian character named Abbas, who is the only African student in the story. It is quite uncommon in Indonesian films to have an African playing as the main character; this study thus aims to analyze how the African character Abbas is represented in the TV series Kelas International. Adopting a qualitative descriptive method, the study draws on Hall’s (1997) theory of representation, Said’s (1979) Orientalism, and Doh’s (2009) stereotyping Africa to delve into the representations of Abbas. The study also employs Heintz and Stracey’s (2008) film theory, focusing primarily on the elements of mise en scène and the soundtracks, to understand how the representation of Abbas is constructed through film elements. The data analysis reveals that the character Abbas is primarily represented in a negative light: being educationally backward, economically poor, and attitude-wise impolite. This study indicates that Kelas Internasional tends to perpetuate negative stereotypes about Africans, rather than counter them. This study is expected to not only contribute to the field of postcolonial studies, but more importantly to raise Indonesian people’s critical awareness of implicit messages embedded in literary works. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the representation of love in George Orwell’s 1984. The data were collected from Part Two and Part Three of the book, focusing on the main characters: Winston Smith and Julia. The present study employs Rimmon-Kenan's (1983) Narratology and Sternberg's (1986) love theory as its analytical tools. The analysis shows that love is represented as three different concepts in the story: perseverance, hope, and a way of rebelling. The analysis also reveals that love is represented as the core element which contributes to the existence of rebellion in the novel. However, because of how strong the government in a dystopian setting is, love is impossible to maintain for a long time. This appears to suggest that, in a dystopian setting, any kind of hope to win against the government seems impossible to achieve. The present study is expected to provide an alternative analysis to literary worksbelonging to dystopian genre. Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the portrayal of an autistic character in relation to autism myths in the novel written by Mark Haddon in 2003 entitled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Autistic characters have gained considerable attention in many contemporary literary works. Within the realm of autism myths and method of textual analysis, the main character in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (2003) was analyzed to see if it is constructed on the stereotypical autistic character. It is found that the autistic character in the novel is portrayed as an autistic child who has a tendency to avoid social contact with others, independent, affectionate and has special talent and savant skill. Moreover, the study also reveals that the portrayal of an autistic character in the novel confirms three myths of autism but negates four other myths. These findings show that current literary works still rely on the myths of autism that are formed by society to portray an autistic character. Keywords: autism, autistic character, myths of autism, portrayal
