Passage is a journal published by English Language and Literature Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Initially published for students’ articles based on their final research paper, Passage now is also accepting articles from researchers outside the study program. The journal focuses on research in language and literary studies written in English. Passage addresses issues on, but not limited to, roles of language and literature, genre, gender, discourse, ethnicity, and media within the frameworks of linguistics and literary theories. It also welcomes more specific research on Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts to introduce a wider scholarship in the region for a more global readership. This journal is published twice a year in the months of April and November.

Abstract

This paper entitled “A Semiotic Analysis of Fashion Domination through Signs in Music Videos” aims to investigate domination issues in the form of fashion by examining denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings of selected scenes in three music videos. The three music videos are Ailee’s “I Will Show You”, Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me”, and Super Junior M’s “Super Girl” as the representatives of Korean, American, and Chinese music videos. The orders of signification were used as the semiotic tools to analyze the data. The results show that a change of appearance emerges in the music videos as a form of domination to maintain the dominant ideology.Keywords: Fashion, Semiotic, Denotation, Connotation, Myth, and Domination

Abstract

This research investigates the translation shifts of English noun phrases in the short story entitled “The Black Cat” (1843) by Edgar Allan Poe into Indonesian as “Kucing Hitam” (2010) which was translated by Maggie Tiojakien. It was focused on the types of translation shifts and the change of meaning in the translation shifts. This research was mostly qualitative supported by descriptive quantification. The data were obtained from an online source at http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/cat_.pdf and from anthology entitled Kisah-kisah Tengah Malam which was published by PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2010. The data were analyzed by applying translation shift theory proposed by Catford (1965) and supported by Fabb’s (2005) Tree Diagram as a tool. The result showed that the most frequent shift that was used by translator was structure shift (59%). It was because the differences of grammatical structure between English and Indonesian. Besides, the change of meaning mostly took place in implicitation (34,4%). It means that the translator tends to use the words in the target language text with words having more general meaning than the source language text in order to fit the context of the story.Keywords: Translation Shift, Noun Phrases, Change Of Meaning

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to analyze the youth representation in five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements and reveal the ideologies reflected in such representation. The data are five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements which are broadcasted in Indonesia from 2002 until 2012. The theories used in this study are Barthes’ orders of signification (1957) and the theory of visual elements proposed by Dyer (1996). The findings of the study show that youth is represented in five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements (2002-2012) through similar ways. Youth is represented in SilverQueen television advertisements through three visual elements (actor, setting, and property): (1) the attractive young people as actors and actresses of the advertisements who are estimated to be about 18-25 years old. They wear casual clothes which represent informality and some accessories which make their appearances look more attractive; (2) the choices of setting which mostly take place outdoors represent the youth’s interest for spending their free time outdoors and enjoying nature; and (3) the choices of property reflect that young people love to relax, hang out with their friends, and have interest for exploration and visiting places. In terms of ideologies, this study found two ideologies behind such representation, namely freedom and hedonism. Keywords: youth, representation, television advertisement, ideology

Abstract

The present study entitled “A Case Study of Multimodal Analysis: The Representation of a Female Model in the ‘Insight’ Rubric of Male Magazine 147th Edition” aims at discovering the image of Indonesian women presented in the men’s magazine visually and verbally. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study applies multimodality based on Halliday’s (1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze the visual and verbal modes in the data. In the visual stage, the data are analyzed by Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) visual grammar, Wilfred’s (1962) meaning of colors, and Barnard’s (2007) theory of fashion and physical appearance. Meanwhile, the verbal data are analyzed Halliday’s (1994) transitivity. The findings show that the integrated visual and verbal modes complement each other to construct the image of the female model. The female model is visually represented as a physically and spiritually beautiful woman with aggressiveness. In addition, the female model is verbally represented as a hardworking, popular, and, curious woman who tends to use her feelings in life. Those representations can lead her to be the sex object for men yet powerful woman. In relation to the gender issue, the study concludes that the magazine reflects how women’s stereotypes change overtime depending on the cultural society.Keywords: Women’s representation, multimodality, visual analysis, verbal analysis, magazine

Abstract

The study aims to elaborate the generic structure of Indonesian cosmetics advertisements on Instagram and copy elements distribution in the generic structure. Theoretical framework in the study is based on Hasan's (1989a) theory of analyzing genre to elaborate the genre of copy ads on Instagram. Moreover, the copy elements proposed by Maslen (2007) which include feature, benefit, and call to action are also utilized to examine the generic structure in depth using the perspective of copywriting. Qualitative method is used in current research employing descriptive statistics to analyze data. Data collection comprises 32 copy ads from 8 Indonesian-written Instagram accounts which specify in promoting cosmetics products on Instagram. Results show that the genre of Indonesian cosmetics copy ads on Instagram manifested three types of generic components including 'opening', 'product description', and 'closing'. As for the copy elements distribution in the generic structure, benefit and call to action are found mostly in 'opening', feature and benefit are in 'product description', and call to action is found mostly in 'closing'. Further research can be conducted to analyze the data obtained from diverse sources and languages in order to increase the credibility of results in current research. Abstract

This qualitative study examines lexical and syntactic features in a commentary of Indonesia U23 against South Korea U23 match. Elan 5.2 software was utilised to identify the features. The data were analysed using Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) metaphor and Ferguson’s (1983) syntactic features. The results show that there are three types of lexical features: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors and five types of syntactic features: simplification, inversion, result expression, heavy modifiers, and routines that are deployed in the commentary of the match. The findings show that syntactic features were used mainly to save utterance time, while lexical features were used as analogy for other concepts. The findings suggest that this study affirms to ideas of using metaphor that football is war and omitting subject, or predicator, or object in commentaries. In addition, in Indonesian context, there is a kind of simplification, that is subject plus predicator plus object deletion in an utterance, and there are only two patterns of result expression: noun phrase and verb construction. Abstract

This study which is entitled An Analysis of Power Relations in Kanae Minato’s Novel Confession (2008) aims to find and investigate the how power is exercised in Kanae Minato’s novel Confessions. Using Foucault’s theory of power, this study is expected to analyze the writer’s purposes of constructed power relations in the novel. Focusing on how power is exercised, the data is expected to be found by analyzing the novel using qualitative research design with descriptive nature. After the data is collected, this study aims to analyze the meaning of exercised power in the novel. This qualitative research analyzes the data by the form of words, phrases and sentences. Abstract

This research is entitled A Translation Analysis of Tourism Term from Indonesian Into English. The aim of the research is to discover the tourism terms found in the textbook, to examine the procedures of translation used in translating the Indonesian tourism terms into English, and to identify the quality of the tourism terms’ translation. This research employed a descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach as a method. It is based on Newmark’s theory on translation. There are 19 procedures of translation according to this theory; the translator in this study applied only 12 procedures in translating the tourism terms. Therefore, the quality of tourism terms’ translation in the bilingual textbook is in grade four or in excellent level. However, it can be proved that the transposition is the most frequently applied by the translator of the textbook in translating the tourism terms. It involves grammatical changes in translating tourism terms from Indonesian into English. On the other hand, the tourism textbook has many terms that require grammar changes in Bahasa Indonesia.Keywords: Tourism terms, Translation Procedures, Textbook

Abstract

This present study entitled Being Cunningham’s Women: The Portrayal of Women in Michael Cunningham’s The Hours is aimed to unearth the way in which Michael Cunningham, as a male author, portrays women in the novel The Hours. This study employs qualitative descriptive method coupled with textual analysis approach. It can be seen from the portrayal of women as the ones who are unconfident and exhausted in domestic sphere yet powerful enough to make their own decision to liberate themselves from the exhaustion caused by their life. In other words, Cunningham subverts Gubar’s (1980, cited in Lange, 2008) notion that male authors perceive women as “blank page.” With the benefit of stream of consciousness method, Cunningham has successfully portrayed women’s experience and their situation accurately while, at the same time, diffusing liberal feminism value in his work. Keywords: Feminism, Liberal Feminism, Portrayal, Stream of Consciousness

Abstract

This study entitled ‘The Portrayal of Masculinity in To Catch a Prince by Gillian McKnight’ aims to find the types of masculinity portrayed in the novel and their meanings. It applies a context-oriented approach and employs the textual analysis technique to answer the research questions. The data are analyzed using Rende’s chick lit theory (2008) and Harris’s theory of masculinity male messages (2005). The findings show that masculinity is portrayed through five types: the perfect man, the controlling man, the lover, the forbearing man, and the nature lover. It can be assumed that traditional masculinity which asserts strong, independent, achieving, hardworking, heterosexual, tough, aggressive, unemotional, physical, competitive, and forceful is still prevailed. In this text, it implies that it is related to the masculinity of fairy tales which are known to champion masculinity.
