Abstract

Religious practices of Javanese fishermen, who majorities are Moslems, have been strongly influenced by the ancestors’ thought. Ritual of sea give alms, offerings and “black magic” are some activities showing its dependence on the supernatural powers. On the other hand, even though they have a high work ethos, fishermen are widely perceived as the poorest society. This article is mainly intended to discuss the fishermen’s belief in relation to their work ethos. The hypothesis is that even though most of the fishermen have a high work ethos, but they do not behave as what their religion has been taught. This article is written based on the literature studies as well as the various knowledge accumulations of some primary researches on the fishermen life. Review of literature studies is purposed to understand the concept of the religion in assessing work ethics and work ethos. Meanwhile, primary data was obtained from a series of studies that has been conducted on the fishermen community in the north and southern coast of Java. Indication, loose understanding of the religion values and ethics are the essential factors which expressed the behavior and character of the fishermen to have permissive attitude, extravagant with money and wasteful.

Abstract

One of the issues faced by countries in Asia is income inequality. Economic development is expected to improve people’s living standards to minimize the gap between low-income and high-income populations. One of economic development is through financial development. The financial sector plays an important role in the economy of a country, the development of the financial sector will indirectly increase the output of other sectors so as to tie the value of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In addition to equality and economic growth, economic development also needs to see whether the two are related to human development as described in the poverty-growth-inequality triangle (PGI Triangle). The purpose of this study is to see a picture of the inequality of income distribution, financial development and human development in six Asian countries. The analysis used descriptive statistics and panel data regression, specifically fixed effect model (FEM) and the random effect model (REM). The result showed that there is a significant influence between financial development and human development on income inequality, the higher the financial development will reduce the level of inequality of a country. Meanwhile, the high value of human development actually increases inequality.

Abstract

This paper presents household-level econometric estimates of income and price elasticities of residential electricity demand in Indonesia. Using annual household survey panel data of SUSENAS from 2011 to 2013, the estimation controls for household characteristics that significantly affect electricity consumption, such as demographic aspects, house size, and ownership of home appliances. The empirical results showed that in Indonesia, the residential electricity is price- and income-inelastic, with price and income elasticities of -0.88 and 0.3, respectively. Urban residents use more electricity than rural residents. Responding to economic growth , the government should prepare greater electricity capacity or induce higher tariffs to encourage electricity savings.

Abstract

Indonesia has experienced a significant improvement in its status of food security, yet it is not followed by improvement in nutritional security. Number of regions with food insecurity decreased significantly however problems of malnutrition among children such as stunting rate peaked for above 37% and obesity rate for just below 20%; known as double-burden malnutrition. This study aimed to examine factors affecting the nutritional security for households in Indonesia by incorporating food and non-food data. Cross sectional regression model is employed from SUSENAS 2013 in which households’ food security is proxy by calorie intakes as a function of households’ expenditures, mother’s age, mother’s education, dummy of closet types, number of member in households, and dummy of access to clean water. The results showed that several variables are positively affects households’ dietary intake namely expenditure, mother’s age, and mother’s education. Moreover, the other variables are negatively and significantly affect food consumptions namely type of closet, number of family member and type of clean water. Theresult implies that the government need to take significant strategies and program to address problems of nutrition by conducting two strategies, 1) changes in household food consumption pattern through shifted mindset and perception of parents’ from knowledge (especially mothers’) in healthy food consumption, 2) improving infrastructure and access for clean water, sanitation, and social security to broaden access of poor for better health status.

Abstract

Asia is expected to become a world economic leader in the next few years. However, the well-being of Asian people remains a challenge that needs to be faced in development. This study aims to analyze the impact of government spending efficiency, perceptions of corruption, exports, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows, and labor force on GDP per capita as indicators of economic well-being in Asia in 2012-2016. The analysis methods used are data envelopment analysis (DEA) and panel data regression. The result shows that government spending efficiency, corruption perception index, exports, and the number of labor force has a significant effect (5% significance level) with a positive direction of influence on GDP per capita, while FDI inflow s have no effect. Keywords: Economic well-being, GDP per capita, DEA, panel data

Abstract

This model aims to visualize the Islamic entrepreneurship concept through observation toward coffee industry which has strong both upward and backward lingkage. In Islamic paradigm, this method is called “istiqra” or that is familiar with the inductive approach. Coffee was choosen as it was originated from Arab where Islam firstly come from. This model was started by conducting “tafakur” and “tadabbur” (i.e. deep contemplation or thorough analysis of certain phenomena which is highly recommended in Islam). The important point from this model is that those benefits from entrepreneurship process are allocated to three activities: consumption, investment, and charity for community. The last allocation is closely related to the long term objective from a Muslim (i.e. heaven). Thus, this model is expected to be applied in other topics in the future.

Abstract

Food security is one of the development priorities in the Government Work Plan (RKP). The formulation of policies regarding the implementation of food security must provide an output that can stabilize food availability based on self-sufficiency and increase ease and ability to access food. This study intends to analyze the socio-economic factors affecting food security in Indonesia. The data used is household-level data from the fifth Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS5) covering 9.819 households. This study uses logistic regression as an estimation method with the dependent variable, namely food security, calculated based on the food consumption score (FCS). Meanwhile, the independent variables are: (1) the profile of the head of the household which includes age, gender, marital status, level of education; (2) qualitative factors which include the type of work of the head of the household, the main fuel for cooking, the availability of toilet, electricity, and water sources in the house; and (3) the location of the households (urban or rural areas). The results show that factors influencing household food security are sanitation aspects (the presence of toilet and water sources inside the house), the use of the main fuel for cooking, the location of the household, as well as the age, marital status, level of education and the type of livelihood of the head of the household.

Abstract

Controlling the banking-monetary in such a way needs to be done so that dynamic of real sector growth developed to expected way. This study is intended to analyze the role of credit interest rate instrument, development of capital adequacy ratio (CAR), and loan to deposit ratio (LDR) to Indonesian economics growth in the last ten years. By using multiple linear stepwise regression analyzing method approach, a very significant role simultaneously and partially from credit interest rate instrument and development of CAR push the Indonesian economics growth in a long term were found. When the average lending rate decreases and CAR increases, it will increase economic growth in the long run. Meanwhile, there is no significant influence of LDR development on Indonesia’s long-term economic growth.

Abstract

Welfare measures has shifted to the condition of subjective wellbeing (SWB). Meanwhile, the welfare of farmers must be prioritized, one of which is to fulfill their basic needs in the form of agricultural land. Ironically, land ownership inequality in Indonesia is still quite high. This study aims to see the impact of agricultural land ownership on the SWB score of farmers in Indonesia. This study uses data from the 2007 and 2014 IFLS and fixed effect estimation method and PSM to address selection bias. Agricultural land tenure was found to have a consistent and positive effect on SWB even after controlling for income.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the potential outbound of China’s tourists. This study analyzed two important aspects in mapping the prospect of tourist. The first aspect is the share on outbound tourists that can help to identify potential tourist visits. The second is Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Per Capita, which represents the level of welfare of the population in a region. The study covered 31 provinces in China. By modifying the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Growth-Share Matrix, we identified eight provinces in China with the most potentials market prospect, namely: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Shandong and Hubei. These provinces are mostly located in eastern part of China. This study recommends that the Indonesia government needs to be more intensive in promoting Indonesia’s tourist destinations in the eight provinces as mentioned.
