Abstract

Abstract

Financial development holds a significant role in reducing carbon emissions. However, the indirect impact of financial development can increase carbon emissions through several channels and shows an inconclusive result. Therefore, this study aims to examine whether financial development is also an important variable for reducing carbon emissions in ASEAN countries. This study utilizes a financial development index as a multidimensional indicator for financial development, using 27 years using balanced panel data from 1992 to 2018. The most important finding from this study is that the contribution of financial development in reducing carbon emissions is always less than the contribution of per capita GDP in increasing carbon emissions. This paper also finds that the inverted U-shaped curve of per capita GDP supports the EKC hypothesis in ASEAN.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that is a major producer and exporter of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and its derivative products at the global level. However, the focus of Indonesian CPO exports is still largely focused on traditional markets. This high level of dependency has a negative impact on export activities, especially in situations of economic shock in the countries concerned. Therefore, the strategy that can be taken is to diversify exports towards non-traditional markets as new destination countries. Thus, a comprehensive study is needed regarding the competitiveness, market position and opportunities for developing the Indonesian CPO export market, as well as identification of the variables that influence the volume of Indonesian CPO exports to seven non-traditional countries, namely Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey, Ghana, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea and Fiji, in the range 2001-2019. The commodity that is the focus of the analysis is Indonesian Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and its derivative products which are classified under the HS code 1511. The analytical approach applied in this research includes Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamic (EPD), X-Model, as well as panel data regression. The analysis results indicate that the competitiveness of Indonesian CPO is very high in the countries studied. Optimistic market development potential is found in Vietnam, the Philippines and Ghana, while markets with lower development potential are located in Turkey, Fiji and Equatorial Guinea. The market with less than optimal development potential is located in Senegal. Several factors that have been proven to significantly influence Indonesia’s CPO export volume include real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), RCA, price, real exchange rate, and economic distance. It is hoped that the government can strengthen trade cooperation by eliminating trade tariff barriers for countries that have promising markets. Meanwhile, for countries with less than optimal potential, a more intensive trade promotion strategy is expected to increase market penetration in these countries.

Abstract

Environmental issues are currently interesting discussion, especially for developing countries. This condition is inseparable from the economic policies of developed countries which have begun to apply the concept of a green economy. Indonesia is still pursuing economic growth to the exclusion of environmental factors. However, the government is trying to overcome environmental problems through green growth policies. The government cannot do it alone, synergy with business actors is needed to create a green economy. The data used in the quantitative method is sourced from BPS environmental statistics for 2013-2020, and Bank Indonesia quarterly 2019-2020 regional financial statistics. The results show that the implementation of greening the national economy has been going well by the government. Corporate through applied ESG like CSR, and community development, and green business principles. It was found that the support from the community has not been maximized because of the ineffectiveness of education related to the importance of the environment for future generations. Massive education is needed through an education system to the community and the provision of rewards (incentives & tax relaxing) for companies ultimately Indonesia's economy and environment are green.

Abstract

The energy transition is driving a greater emphasis on using renewable energy sources because there is broad agreement on the critical importance of preventing further warming of the environment. The ASEAN nations, however, need help with this process because the consumption of energy from fossil fuels is the main factor drivingtheir economies’ expansion. Consequently, this transition presents a challenge for these nations. The qualitativecontent analysis study with in-depth semi-structured interviews in face-to-face dialog explores the phenomenonof the energy transition based on the practical and empirical views of a selection of individuals who work in therenewable energy business. The primary data based on the interview is transcribed into the text using MAXQDA2022 to develop the core category within the Qualitative Content Analysis. The results of the data analysis led tothe formation of six core categories, which derived from the current economic development characteristics, therenewable energy challenges (regulation, investment, market structures, and technology), encouraging customers, energy transition potential, measuring green growth, and the impact of the national determination contribution (NDC) on catastrophic and sustainable development. Both participants’ empirical points of view demonstrate a relationship between energy security and the current state of economic development. The current state of economic development is heavily dependent on fossil fuel energy, which is in high demand and produces high CO2 emissions, which can result in potential catastrophic or natural disasters. The energy transition is presently confronted with challenges in regulations, financing and investment, market structures, and individual behaviors regarding the consumption of clean energy, fostering renewable energy, and environmentally friendly products. This study recommends adjusting the existing energy regulations, democratizing infrastructure and market structures, encouraging customers to consume clean energy, and accelerating the energy transition.

Abstract

According to the Ministry of Trade (2013), woodencraft commodities are potential export products due to their advantages, such as high attractiveness in the global market. Indonesian wooden crafts benefit from the diversity of quality wood species from extensive production forests that comply with international regulations for the wood market. However, despite these advantages, their export value showed a negative trend during 2011–2021. This study aims to determine the competitiveness of Indonesian woodencrafts in 10 main destinations of the global woodencraft market and to identify the factors influencing their export value. The analysis methods used are Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamics (EPD), and panel data regression. The results show that Indonesian woodencrafts are highly competitive in 9 countries, and are positioned as a “rising star” in 10 countries according to EPD analysis. Furthermore, inflation in destination countries, the real exchange rate, and RCA value have a positive and significant effect on export value, while export price has a negative and significant effect. The findings highlight the need for government policies to promote Indonesian wooden crafts in markets with high competitiveness. In addition, the government is encouraged to secure raw material supply, enhance trade agreements, and support SMEs through training and broader access to international markets

Abstract

Carbon emissions are an urgent global environmental issue, particularly for ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, which face significant challenges in reducing them. This study examines the impact of Government Expenditure on Education, economic growth, foreign direct investment (FDI), foreign aid, and the Islamic Capital Market (ICM) on carbon emissions in ASEAN countries, while considering the moderating effect of regulatory quality. The research employs panel data analysis using the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) to address potential endogeneity and dynamic relationships, and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) to examine the interaction effects of regulatory quality. Data were collected through purposive sampling for the period 2011 to 2021. The results indicate that FDI has a significant positive impact on carbon emissions, whereas Foreign Aid and Government Expenditure on Education have a mitigating effect on emissions. Interestingly, ICM has a positive influence on carbon emissions, contrary to expectations. This may reflect the limited integration of environmental considerations in Islamic financial instruments in the region. Regulatory quality significantly moderates only the relationship between Foreign Aid and carbon emissions, indicating its selective role in shaping environmental outcomes. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated examination of conventional and Islamic financial indicators, as well as regulatory quality, in the ASEAN context, an area that remains underexplored. Based on the findings, it is recommended that policymakers strengthen environmental regulations to mitigate the negative impacts of FDI, while encouraging reforms to enhance the ecological responsibility of Islamic capital market practices. Further research is needed to explore institutional and financial mechanisms that can align investments with sustainability goals.

Abstract

Child labor is a type of work that must be eliminated to achieve decent work. Child labor is still a global problem, including in Indonesia. The causes of child labor are closely related to family factors, namely parents' work and poverty. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of informality and poverty on child labor in Indonesia using data from the 2021 National Socio-Economic Survey. The method used is multinomial logit regression analysis with work, work-school, and school categories in children aged 10-17. The analysis results show that the relative opportunity for children to work and work while attending school compared to school is higher for households with a head of household working in the informal sector compared to the formal sector. Poverty has a different pattern where the relative opportunity for children to work compared to school is higher in poor households than in non-poor. However, the relative probability of a child working while attending school is lower for poor households than for non-poor households. Policies related to parental informality and poverty can be intensified to reduce child labor in Indonesia.

Abstract

Most people think of business growth as an important goal. Business growth is a key indicator of a company’s success and a major source of new wealth, jobs, and economic growth in every country in the world. However, not many SME owners want to grow their businesses, and it’s not always clear what the entrepreneur’s plans for growth are after the business starts up. This study wants to find out what makes businesses want to grow and how that affects the growth of their small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study found that the desire to grow a business is affected by several psychological and socio-demographic factors. Several personal traits, like emotional intelligence, willingness to take risks, need for achievement, motivation, and self-efficacy, play a big role in a person’s purpose to grow as an entrepreneur at the 5% level. Strategic, management, process, and digital skills affect the desire to grow more than education does. This study also shows that a company’s plans for growth are linked to its real growth in North Kalimantan and East Kalimantan in terms of sales growth and asset growth.
