Abstract

The Integrated Social Welfare Data (DTKS) is the database used to target beneficiaries of social protection and poverty alleviation programs in Indonesia, including social assistances to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. The problem is that not every kabupaten/kota (district/city) government updates DTKS periodically. As a result, mistargeting has been a repeatedly occurring problem in the implementation of many social protection and poverty alleviation programs. During the pandemic, the problem also results in delayed distribution of assistance. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the current implementation of DTKS updates and learn the lessons to enable a sustainable update of DTKS using a better process in the future. The data was collected qualitatively in six regions of case studies from December 2020 to May 2021. This research finds that the factors influencing sustainable DTKS updates by kabupaten/kota government lead to two main aspects: commitment to update DTKS and capacity to perform it. To make DTKS update better, kabupaten/kota governments need to be encouraged to utilize DTKS more, provided with clear regulations and strengthened in terms of their capacity. While kabupaten/kota governments are responsible for updating DTKS, the governments at central, province, and village/kelurahan levels need to support and be more engaged to ensure that DTKS is updated in a sustainable manner and at a high-quality standard.

Abstract

This study estimates the intergenerational income mobility in Indonesia using data from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS). Intergenerational income mobility is proxied by intergenerational elasticity, which measures the correlation between parents and their children’s incomes. Intergenerational elasticity is also regarded as a measure of equality of opportunity. The estimates in this study suggest that intergenerational elasticity for father-son pairs in Indonesia is between 0.44 and 0.50. Compared to other ASEAN countries, Indonesia is less mobile than Singapore but more mobile than Malaysia. Further analyses of the income mobility matrix indicate relatively low mobility for individuals in the upper-income quartile and medium mobility for individuals in the lower-income quartile.

Abstract

Bottled water has become popular due to its quality and affordability. The industry's homogeneity encourages competition, leading to various business behaviors. This study analyzes the bottled water industry in Indonesia, focusing on market structure, conduct, and performance, as well as the relationship between these factors and internal efficiency. Using fixed-effects (within) IV regression and large and medium manufacturing industry survey data, this study found a simultaneous relationship between market concentration, internal efficiency, and price-cost margin, with all SCP variables significantly affecting each other. The results show that market concentration, internal efficiency, and market growth positively and significantly affect price-cost margins. The four-firm concentration ratio has fluctuated with a downward trend over time. Due to changing laws and regulations, the bottled water market structure shifted from a tight oligopoly to a loose oligopoly between 1990 and 2005, and then to effective competition from 2006 to 2014. The findings support the quiet-life hypothesis and the efficient-structure hypothesis, which suggest that firms with significant market power that exist in a highly concentrated market will quietly generate high profits with no pressure or incentive to improve efficiency, whereas a firm with a low-cost structure can increase profits by lowering prices and increasing market share.

Abstract

Research on the role of transportation infrastructure (roads, ports, and airports) on regional development is generally still at the macro level (national and regional). This study discusses the impact of transportation infrastructure on regional development at the micro level, specifically on the labor productivity of the manufacturing industries. Using Indonesian manufacturing industries data in 2017, this study shows the positive influence of road and port transportation infrastructure on labor productivity in the manufacturing industries. The airport transportation infrastructure has no significant effect on the labor productivity of the manufacturing industries. This study also shows differences in the impact of transportation infrastructure on companies located on Java Island with companies located outside Java Island, as well as companies categorized as a large industry and companies categorized as middle industry.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food supply chains and income sources, threatening household food security worldwide. Using an online survey of 1,495 households across 32 provinces in Indonesia during September–October 2020, this study investigates the determinants of food security and coping strategies among predominantly urban households. Food security was measured using the USDA household food security index, while socio-demographic and economic characteristics were analysed with an ordered probit model. Results show that 36.2% of households experienced food insecurity, with the most vulnerable being those with lower education, informal jobs, and lower expenditures. Urban middle-class households relied on savings, reduced consumption of expensive foods, and shifted to online food purchasing and home cooking as key coping strategies. Social assistance programs were critical in preventing deeper deprivation, but coverage remained limited among informal workers. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening urban resilience through digital food systems, adaptive social protection, and support for vulnerable groups in times of crisis. Beyond the COVID-19 context, the study provides insights for designing more responsive food security and social protection policies in Indonesia and other emerging economies.

Abstract

Mental health remains a significant concern, particularly in developing countries, where a multitude of factors, such as well-being, education, smoking habits, marital status, employment status, and gender, contribute to mental health problems. This study’s primary objective is to dissect the key factors, with a focus on well-being, that adversely impact an individual’s mental health. Employing survey data from IFLS encompassing approximately 17,000 observations, this research employs OLS, Logit, and Probit methodologies to forecast the likelihood of socioeconomic variables influencing depression symptoms. The findings reveal that education, marital status, occupational type, year (indicating happiness level), and expenditure exhibit a positive correlation with happiness. Remarkably, there is a coherent pattern across the OLS, Logit, and Probit models, indicating that variables such as cigarette consumption, female gender, and residing in urban or rural areas are inversely related to happiness. In conclusion, socioeconomic factors wield a discernible influence on happiness, underscoring the imperative for government intervention through policy measures, especially in bolstering well-being, to enhance individual happiness levels.

Abstract

Abstract

Several factors cause fishermen to experience difficulties in accessing sources of credit from banks, including unstable cash inflows, consumption patterns that are considered wasteful, and lack of collateral. In general, fishermen overcome this problem by relying on sources of financing from personal savings, loans from families and high-cost non-formal financial institutions. The problem is that if fishermen are considered not bankable, why are non-formal financial institutions willing to provide credit? The purpose of writing this article is to find financing patterns that apply among fishermen and formulate fishermen financing models that are in accordance with the conditions and economic culture of fishermen in sharing risks, sharing capital and sharing results. Data collection was carried out using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with informants in several coastal areas of Java and outside Java during the 2011-2014 period, then processed and analyzed qualitatively interpretatively and reconstructed in the form of fishermen’s financing patterns and models. There are two important findings in this study. The first is the pattern of financing fishermen in the form of an inverted U which describes the three stages of financing fishermen, namely pre-bankable, bankable and post-bankable. The second is a fishermen’s financing model that is in accordance with the fishermen’s economic culture which is formulated in four criteria namely flexible, excellent services, trust and affordability, which is shortened to FESTA

Abstract

This study analyzes the functional relationship between the risks of mudharabah financing and the yield rate and inflation by placing the Covid-19 pandemic as a moderating variable. Using monthly data from 2014.6 to 2021.1, the applied quantitative model consists of linear regression and moderated regression analysis, which is then estimated using the ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. The study pointed out that the yield rate and inflation positively and significantly affect financing risk. Likewise, the Covid-19 pandemic also significantly increased mudharabah financing risk. The moderating effect of the pandemic on the influence of yield rates and inflation on financing risk is negative and significant. For pre-pandemics, the two predictor variables positively affect financing risk. The higher the yield rate and inflation, the higher the financing risk, and conversely, a decrease in yield rate and inflation significantly reduce financing risk. During a pandemic, the risk of mudharabah financing increased along with the decline of the yield rate and inflation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of governance and trade openness on female labor force participation in Southeast Asia. To answer the research objective, this study uses analytical techniques including principal component analysis and advanced static panel regression: generalized least square. The results show that institutional governance has a mostly negative effect on female labor force participation, while economic governance has a mostly positive effect. Politicasl governance has a mostly negative effect on female labor force participation, while trade openness has a positive effect on female labor force participation. In addition, life expectancy and government expenditure are identified as driving factors for increasing female labor force participation, given that the role of women is now increasingly massive and is one of the keys to the success of labor productivity in Southeast Asia. Policy implications can be expressed through various transmissions, such as the government actualizing balanced regulations by considering the role of women in the formal and informal sectors. This study is the first to identify the relationship between the role of governance and trade openness on women's labor force participation specifically in Southeast Asian countries in a linear context.
