Abstract

The issue of climate change has always been a highlight for ecologists and leaders of various countries. This context is a complement to the study of the concept of sustainable development to preserve the environment. On the other hand, carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming and result in environmental degradation, thus requiring mitigation to achieve inclusive, sustainable development. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of green finance, digitalization, and energy intensity on carbon emissions in 18 emerging market countries during 1992–2022. This study uses a dynamic heterogeneous panel approach (panel autoregressive distributed lag model-panel ARDL) pooled mean group (PMG). The study results indicate that green finance has a positive but insignificant effect in the long term but has a short-term effect on carbon emissions. Digitalization has a significant positive effect in the long term but a significant negative effect on carbon emissions. Meanwhile, energy intention has a significant positive effect in the long term and a significant positive effect in the short term on carbon emissions in emerging market countries during the study period. These findings provide new insights into the role of these three indicators to be considered in contributing to and supporting sustainable environmental development globally and specifically in emerging market countries.

Abstract

Accurate rice price forecasting is crucial for East Java's economic stability. East Java stands as Indonesia's top rice-producing province, supported by data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) published in October 2024, which highlights an impressive production volume of 9 million tons, outperforming all other provinces in the country. Using the Weighted Fuzzy Time Series (WFTS) model combined with Lagrange Quadratic Programming (LQP) and Differential Evolution (DE), this study forecasts rice prices from January to July 2024 using data from https://panelharga.badanpangan.go.id. The WFTS-LQP-DE model enhances accuracy by refining forecasts through DE, showing improvements over the WFTS-LQP model with lower Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). Recommendations include integrating WFTS-LQP-DE forecasts into planning, improving supply chain management, and establishing a price stabilisation fund.

Abstract

The low human development index in the Asian region requires the role of Government through budget spending policies and good governance. This study aims to analyze the effect of Government spending and good governance on the human development index and determine its ranking based on the new calculation model. The data used is panel data with a combination of 29 countries in Asia from 2010 to 2021. The variables used are the human development index, Government spending on education and health, good governance, GDP Per Capita, Unemployment, Population, Life Expectancy, ICT, and average and expected years of schooling used to rank countries. The analysis technique used is panel data regression with a fixed effect approach. The results show that government spending on education significantly affects the human development index, which has a positive relationship. Likewise, Government spending in the health sector significantly affects the human development index but has a negative relationship. Different results have shown that good governance does not significantly affect the human development index. As for the calculation results with the geometric mean, Singapore has the highest human development, while Pakistan and Myanmar have the lowest human development in Asian countries.

Abstract

The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Province exhibits the highest level of income inequality in Indonesia. The government of DIY has designed an economic development strategy that prioritizes education and tourism, which encourages structural change from the agricultural sector to the service sector. Nevertheless, such conditions may lead to continued income inequality. This study aims to ascertain the condition and impact of structural changes on income inequality in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) between 2013 and 2023. This study employs two analytical methods: shift-share analysis and panel data regression with a Random Effect Model (REM). The findings indicate that structural change from agriculture to the service sector exerts a positive and statistically significant effect on income inequality. In addition, it is found that income inequality is also affected by service sector labor income and government educational expenditure.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the emerging Madurese stores in Indonesia has recently become the main discourse by the mass and social media, considering its accessibility to nearer road and 24/7 non-stop service. However, non-Madurese retail stores stated that these are violating local regulations and spoiling local economic systems. Later, this business actually generates economic growth as mandated by SDGS 2030. Research objective here is to investigate the business pattern and its influence on national economic development in the Madurese stores in Jakarta Greater Area. The research is using qualitative methods, in combination of in-depth interviews and literature studies. By addressing the problem with Sen’s capabilities approach, this study found that Madurese stores are able to empower the Madurese people through complex socio-economic systems, whereas each family could develop entrepreneurial skills and decision-making ability towards the businesses.

Abstract

Economic activities not only enhance human well being, but also create environmental degradation. One significant form of this degradation is climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In Indonesia, the highest GHG emissions come from energy sector and Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector. Emissions in FOLU sector caused by deforestation, forest fire, oil palm productions, etc. This study aims to analyzed the research trends about implementation of carbon pricing especially in FOLU sector. Bibliometric analysis was conducted by employing 929 research data from the Scopus database published from 2003 to 2023. The research was using VOS viewer to visualised research topics and cluster analysis. Due to limited access to the full texts of the relevant articles, this study employed a narrative literature review approach, as a systematic literature review could not be conducted under these constraints. This study found that many articles explain about how land-use change resulting from oil palm plantation expansion is a major driver of peatland alteration and a significant source of carbon emissions in the land-use change sector in Indonesia. It was found from the bibliographic study that recent studies have increasingly focused on topics such as blue carbon, carbon neutrality, carbon tax, etc. In line with this, methodological approaches like computable general equilibrium models, and scenario simulation are being used more frequently in current research on carbon pricing. The most prominent and widely discussed research topics include land use change, deforestation, climate change, etc.

Abstract

Digitalization in the agricultural supply chain is increasingly developing and contributing to increasing the agricultural sector's efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness. This study aims to map digital technologies that have been applied in the agricultural supply chain and identify risks that may arise from their implementation. Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method based on the PRISMA approach, this study analyzed 114 articles from various relevant academic sources. The results of the studies show that blockchain technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital platforms are the most widely used technologies in various agricultural subsystems, including production, processing, distribution, and marketing. Various risks must be anticipated, such as technical risks (cyber attacks and system failures), regulatory risks (differences in policies between countries), and cultural risks (loss of traditional agricultural methods). The results of this study are expected to be a reference for policymakers and academics in developing sustainable agricultural supply chain digitalization strategies.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has put the Indonesian economy into a recession, as indicated by negative (y-o-y) economic growth for 2 consecutive quarters, namely Q2-2020 of -5.32% and Q3-2020 of -3.49%. This research aimed to explain the strong resilience of the MSMEs in Indonesia against an economic recession. A total of 541 MSMEs were interviewed all over Indonesia from August to October 2020 via telephone and video call. Several selected respondents conducted focus group discussion (FGD). The descriptive analysis found that 19% of MSMEs were no longer able to survive, 30% of MSMEs still retained their employees while 51%MSMEs were still survive. The government assistance was only provided to MSMEs that have loan from banks. Based on t-statistical test, all performance indicators of MSMEs were decreasing due to COVID-19. The decline in MSME business performance was statistically significant, namely a decrease in working capital (-54%), labor (-37%), monthly income (-34%), land (-2%), and machinery and equipment (-3%). Meanwhile, the monthly operating expenses (-21%.) decrease was not statistically significant. From the FGD we conclude that the surviving MSMEs had hidden wealth such as savings, building, and vehicle assets that could be sold or pawned. Disaster risk management (DRM) and the preparation of a business continuity plan (BCP) are very important that MSMEs must have to help them survive in a critical condition or when a disaster occurs. The government should start assisting MSMEs in preparing it. Government can issue social bonds for this matter.

Abstract

The structure of GDP nowadays is still dominated by households. As a result, economic growth stands at 5 percent. To boost economic growth performance, industrialization should be taken into account. In the process, energy availability particularly electricity becomes one of the main components. For this reason, the main purpose of this study is to measure the effect of electricity and industrialization on economic growth. To do so, this study employs ARDL model and uses secondary data with sample period from 1987 to 2016. Regression result analysis shows that electricity consumption, manufacturing, workers in the industrial sector, household consumption, and trading volume empirically significant both in the short-run and long-run. Interestingly, the value of the electricity consumption coefficient, the added value of processing industries, and the proportion of workers in the industrial sector are positive indicating that those variables contribute positively to economic growth. Meanwhile, the value of household consumption coefficient and trading volume is negative. This indicates that those variables contribute negatively to economic growth. Interestingly, among the five explanatory variables, electricity consumption is the strongest variable in boosting economic growth both in the short-run and the long-run. In addition, bounds cointegration test shows that all explanatory variables involved in this study have a long-term relationship with economic growth.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate, using relevant robust econometric modelling, physical capital and human capital, and their impact on growth in Indonesia for policy analysis. Indonesia is already underway to the structural transformation from basic sector to industry and service sectors which requires corresponding human capital. It is very crucial to investigate which level education has been in demand for such transformation process. Therefore, the auto regressive distributed lag (ARDL) by Pesaran and Pesaran (1997) was chosen for supporting the relationship analysis using data from 1970 to 2017. The important finding for policy analysis was that human capital appeared to be a continuing factor shaping Indonesia’s growth, along with physical capital accumulation, with particularly strong effects for human capital arising from tertiary education. Physical capital has shown a strong and significant impact on the growth in the long run and indicated that Indonesia needs long term investment to generate growth. Such investment has distinctions related to sustainable operation such as infrastructure, sophisticated services, and venture capital. Consequently, it requires high skill labour supplied by tertiary education institutions. A further development of tertiary education next to enhancement of investment environment in manufacture and service sector should be set as priority programs in inducing growth.
