Abstract

his study analyzes the effect of Islamic religiosity on income distribution. The religiosity was proxied by three measurement indicators comprising the number of mosques, pesantren, and santri. Using a panel dataset of 23 districts in Aceh from 2010 to 2017, the data analysis model used was panel regression with the fixed-effect method. The study found that the pesantren and santri had a positive effect the income inequality. In contrast, the existence of mosques did not affect income inequality. The results of the Granger causality test provide statistical information on the one-way causality from income inequality to mosques and pesantren and from mosques and santri to pesantren. But, there is no causality from the three dimensions of Islamic religiosity to income inequality. This statistical information suggests that, in the short run, the change in Islamic religiosity in Aceh is a response to changes in income inequality. On the other hand, income inequality does not respond to Islamic religiosity changes.

Abstract

Indonesia still has less developed districts. In Indonesia, districts are administrative areas after provinces. The number of underdeveloped regencies in Indonesia is 122 or 29% of the total 415 regencies established during 2015-2019 by the central government. Underdeveloped regencies are regencies whose regions and communities are less developed, as seen from five aspects: the community’s economy, human resources, facilities and infrastructure, regional financial capacity, accessibility, and regional characteristics. Lagging districts occur due to spending that has not supported the development, both physical and non-physical development. District spending that does not support development indicates poor quality of spending. This study aims to examine the indicators of the quality of spending in underdeveloped regions and relate them to development performance. Expenditure quality indicators include spending priorities, timeliness, spending allocations, accountability and transparency, and effectiveness. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is applied to measure the quality of spending and development performance of underdeveloped regions. This study found the quality of district spending not only can reduce poverty levels, but also increase the level of Human Development Index (HDI). This study also found a new model of the quality of regional spending, namely making indicators (poverty and HDI) into variables of development performance.

Abstract

The conventional data analysis in economics is based on a model derived from economic theories. In contrast, data mining is a data-driven analysis to extract data and find a pattern describing the empirical interaction between variables. The emerging area of data mining offers an opportunity for extracting information from macroeconomic data. However, it is still a challenge for economic researchers and policymakers to embrace data mining because it is closely related to the information technology discipline. This study responds to the limited use of data mining in the economic area by analyzing macroeconomic indicators published by the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. The primary purpose of this study is to offer a case for using the data mining approach for macroeconomic indicators. The specific objectives were (1) to introduce the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) as a process framework and Knime Analytics Platform as a data mining software for macroeconomic data analysis; and (2) to characterize East Java regencies/municipalities based on their macroeconomic indicators and region profiles. This study was categorized as secondary and quantitative research. The unit of analysis was the regency/municipality. Five macroeconomic indicators: Human Development Index (HDI), Gross Regional Domestic Products (GRDP), poverty rate, Gini Ratio, and open unemployment rate, were selected as the variables. Four region profiles: area, population, population density, and the number of villages were included in the analysis. The clustering model was implemented through Knime’s workflow. The result of clustering grouped 38 regions into three. Its applicability and simplicity indicated the appropriateness of the CRISP-DM process framework for analyzing the structured official data. Furthermore, the predictive model, applied to past years’ datasets, revealed the regions that experienced improvement and shifted their membership between clusters over three years. Moreover, the inclusion of region profiles has provided a better understanding of underlying factors explaining the association between macroeconomic indicators. This study suggests that the East Java Government considers different facilitation-focused programs based on the characteristics of three clusters for better budget efficiency. This research adds to the literature on economic development, particularly by introducing data mining, the CRISP-DM method, and Knime software to analyze macroeconomic indicators of regency/municipality.

Abstract

The study analyzes the determinants of people’s food consumption behavior in two regions that have different food consumption patterns, namely DI Yogyakarta (DIY) and Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). In DIY, food consumption behavior has led to healthy food patterns so that analysis leads to determinants of healthy food consumption behavior. While in NTT, consumption behavior pattern is still oriented to staple food so that analysis leads to determinant of non staple food consumption of rice. The analytical method used in this study is path analysis with behavioral theory approach. Based on path analysis, the consumption of healthy family food in DIY is influenced by the intention of housewife in serving food. The intention of the housewife is influenced by the attitude formed by the knowledge and strong support from the closest person (husband). In addition, the intention is also strongly influenced by environmental control, especially family habits that prefer to consume their own processed foods. While in NTT, the intentions of housewives in serving non-rice staple food are influenced by attitude and environmental control. Attitudes are influenced by the skills and knowledges of housewives. While environmental control influenced family habits of consuming non-rice staple food and religious ceremonies. Hence, the government needs to do food consumption in accordance with the expectation, among others: First, increase promotion about the Desirable Dietary Pattern (DDP) in DIY and socialization of diversification of staple foods in NTT. Second, setting up training of varies healthy food processing for housewives considering that actually family members prefer processed food compared to instant food.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe the spread of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and domestic investment according to its location, sector, and labour absorption. Analysis is based on secondary data published by Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). There are three main findings in this study: First, this study found that in the period 2002-2008, the largest part of FDI or domestic investment. This uneven investment concertration occured because in the eye of investors, Java and Sumatera is more attractive than other island in Indonesia in term of better infrastructure, wider potential market and higher quality of human resources. Second, the majority of foreign and domestic investors selected secondary sector (manufacturing) for their investment. Interestingly, there was a trend that those investments shifted from secondary sector to tertiary sector. Third, labour absorption both in FDI and domestic investment, particulary invetsed in the secondary sector tend to increase. However, there is a tendency that investment in secondary and tertiary sectors moved to less labour intensive industries.

Abstract

The paper investigates determinants of Indonesia’s microfinance credit disbursement, case taken from Indonesia’s rural banks (BPRs) which primarily focus on providing funding to the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). The study applies Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model by using monthly data over the period of January 2009 to January 2016. Result indicates that rural banks credit disbursement is more determined by demand side rather than supply side as variable representing demand side (production index) has significant effect to credit disbursement both long run and short run. In terms of supply side, the amount of credit disbursement is affected by interbank fund in the long run, whereas in the short run the significant variables are customer fund and internal fund. In addition, Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Non-Performing Loan (NPL) impose significant effect to the microfinance credit disbursement; yet, interestingly, interest rate is not a significant factor in microfinance’s case.

Abstract

This paper discusses about the advantages and disadvantages which happen in the national industries as a result of the domination of foreign investment. Indonesia has been losing the momentum of the development of its nation industries. From the 1970s until the 1980s , Indonesia had the opppoortunity to take control of industries in the Asian region, especially as China, Malaysia, and Thailand had still not developed their power to build and develop their industries. Without a good infrastructure and a good logistic, qualified human resources, ability to control technology which support dynamic innovational activity and intensive coorporation between universities and business world, Indonesia will be left behind by any industry from any other country. This paper result, foreign investment is important for the development of industries. Indonesia must try to absorb the advantages deriving from foreign investment. Therefore, domestic companies in Indonesia will not only become the medium but also would be able to absorb the new technology associated with foreign investment.

Abstract

The existence of construction sector in the structure of the national economy can be  seen by their role in producing physical output that supports the smoothness of the economic activities. The development of the construction sector depends on the availability of the fund and project development provided by the government. Therefore, the involvement of private sector on the construction must be increased to support the limit of government budget. Nevertheless, the increase of foreign construction companies in Indonesia raises the concern of the emergence of their domination in national construction sector. This article aims to analyze the role of the construction sector in the national economy and to explain the domination of the foreign investors in Indonesia's construction sector. This article suggests that the involvement of foreign private enterprise must be followed by an increase on the competitiveness of domestic enterprise in the construction sector. Furthermore, the increase of financial capacity, company's capacity, technological command, and quality of human resources are some indicators that need to be improved. On the other hand, fiscal stimulus is an alternative solution for increasing the activity of the construction sector especially for their benefit for creating more job opportunities. With the existence of the increase in local competitiveness, foreign domination in construction sector can be minimized and precisely open the opportunity for the involvement of the local contractors in large scale construction projects in Indonesia.
