Abstract

The main issue addressed in this study is that early literacy skills in children aged 4-5 years at KB Kuntum Khaira Kota Padang Panjang Timur are still not optimal. This can be seen from the fact that some children still struggle to distinguish between letter shapes and sounds. The Alphabet and Picture Box Media (Kofabar) is one activity that can enhance early literacy skills in children. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Alphabet and Picture Box Media (Kofabar) has an effect on early literacy skills in children aged 4-5 years. The research method used is quantitative with an experimental design, specifically a one-group pre-test post-test design. The population for this study includes all children at KB Kuntum Khaira Kota Padang Panjang Timur, totaling 18 students. The sample for this study was determined using purposive sampling, with the sample consisting of 8 children from the Mekkah class. The instrument used is a checklist with assessment categories: Not Developed (BB), Starting to Develop (MB), Developing as Expected (BSH), and Developing Very Well (BSB). Data collection techniques include observation, and data analysis techniques involve normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis testing using the t-test. Based on the results of the study on the effect of the Alphabet and Picture Box Media (Kofabar) on early literacy skills in children aged 4-5 years, it was found that before the treatment, the average early literacy skill score was 10.12, and after the treatment, the average score was 20.25, showing an increase of 10.12. Statistical analysis with a significance level of 5% indicates that t0= 22.48 is greater than tt= 2.36 (t0= 22.48 >tt= 2.36), thus the null hypothesis (h0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (ha) is accepted, meaning the Alphabet and Picture Box Media (Kofabar) significantly affects early literacy skills in children. In conclusion, the Alphabet and Picture Box Media (Kofabar) has a significant effect on early literacy skills in children aged 4-5 years

Abstract

For reading to be successful, motivation plays a crucial role. Motivation is just as vital as attitudes in the decision to read, acting as a foundational element in developing reading proficiency and a prerequisite to engaging in reading. This study focused on the investigation of reading motivation factors among university students in Indonesia, utilizing the revised MREQ questionnaires by Wang and Guthrie (2004). Using quantitative method with descriptive analysis design to interpret the data. These findings highlight the need for a multifaceted approach to fostering reading motivation among university students. Educators should consider balancing extrinsic motivators like grades and recognition with strategies to cultivate intrinsic interest in reading. Future research could explore how these motivational factors interact with cultural contexts and specific academic disciplines, potentially leading to more tailored approaches for promoting reading motivation in higher education settings.

Abstract

Peer feedback serves as a valuable strategy for improving students’ writing proficiency. Over the past forty years, peer assessment, review, and feedback have been widely promoted, with a significant body of research emerging in both first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing. Nevertheless, limited studies have delved into how students perceive and respond to their peers’ written work in varying contexts, as well as the underlying reasons for their reactions. This study aims to explore students’ perspectives on the implementation of peer feedback during the writing of expansion texts. Specifically, it examines students’ emotional responses, their engagement in the feedback process, their reactions to feedback received, and whether the benefits of peer feedback established in earlier research remain relevant to current learners. Employing a qualitative approach and a case study design, the study draws on questionnaire responses and archived materials from two English education students at one of the universities in West Java who participated in peer feedback activities. The findings reveal that self-confidence affects students’ engagement with feedback, while an organized peer feedback process helps in correcting mistakes and improving writing quality. For future research, it is recommended to include a larger sample size, explore different educational levels, and examine the long-term impact of peer feedback on students’ writing development.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, early foreign language proficiency—particularly in English as the most widely used international language across various domains—has become a necessity. Introducing basic English vocabulary to children serves as a crucial first step in developing their language competence. This study aims to enhance students’ mastery of English vocabulary related to facial body parts through the application of the song method among second-grade elementary school students. The research employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The participants consisted of ten students who received instruction through educational songs themed around body parts. Data were collected via observation, interviews, and both pre-tests and post-tests. Analysis using the paired t-test revealed an improvement in the mean score from 32 in the pre-test to 75 in the post-test, with a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05. These results indicate that the song method significantly improves students’ vocabulary mastery. Interactive and enjoyable song-based learning was found to stimulate memory retention, enhance pronunciation, and foster a positive learning atmosphere. Therefore, the song method can be considered an effective alternative strategy for teaching English to young learners at the elementary level.

Abstract

The English textbook serves as a crucial educational resource that imparts linguistic competence while also influencing learners' views on culture and national identity. This study analyzes the representation of national identity in the English for Nusantara Class VIII book using Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. This study employs a descriptive qualitative design, utilizing student and teacher books from the 2022 edition of the Merdeka Curriculum as the primary data sources. The analysis was conducted across three dimensions: text analysis, discursive practices, and socio-cultural practices. The results indicate that national identity is conveyed through cultural symbols (such as the flag and national anthem), Pancasila values (including gotong royong, tolerance, and environmental stewardship), local figures, national heroes, and the enhancement of local context in educational activities. The teacher's book offers clear guidance for incorporating national values into teaching activities and strategies. This book demonstrates advancements in integrating aspects of national identity relative to earlier textbooks; however, it also reveals limitations, including the predominance of Javanese popular culture and insufficient representation of regions like Papua and Maluku. This study demonstrates that textbooks persist as ideological instruments of the state, highlighting the necessity for ongoing examination of more inclusive representations in education. Additional research is advisable to investigate the reactions of students and teachers to the book content, alongside the application of multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis to examine visual influences and classroom practices in greater detail.

Abstract

This study analyses the value perceived by students towards the implementation of Project-Based Writing (PBW) in shaping the competencies of the 6Cs of the 21st century: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Citizenship, and Character. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected through a Likert questionnaire from 30 English Education students at IAIN Curup who had participated in PBW learning. The researcher employed SPSS software to analyze Likert scale data and classify students' perceived values. The analysis showed that students perceived values are “agree” to “strongly agree” that PBW significantly improved competencies in critical thinking (Mean = 4.27; SD = 0.52), creativity (Mean = 4.33; SD = 0.58), collaboration (Mean = 3.82; SD = 0.65), communication (Mean = 3.99; SD = 0.71), citizenship (Mean = 3.90; SD = 0.63), and character (Mean 3.95; SD = 0.64). PBW creates an immersive learning experience through the development of analytical thinking skills, innovation, teamwork, effective communication, social awareness, and resilience. PBW enhances analytical thinking, creativity, teamwork, communication, and social awareness by involving students in in-depth research, problem-solving, and community-oriented projects. This research confirms the important role of PBW in enhancing students' readiness to face real-world challenges while suggesting improvements to the project design to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. The study on Personality-Based Learning (PBW) in IAIN Curup has limitations, including limited subjects, limited data collection using questionnaires, focus on student perceptions, inability to differentiate between online and offline learning, and insufficient project design analysis.
