Abstract

This study investigates the problematic issues surrounding the representation of idiomatic expressions in monolingual online dictionaries, with a particular focus on the Oxford Monolingual Online Learner’s Dictionary. Idiomatic expressions, which are characterized by non-literal meanings and fixed or semi-fixed lexical patterns, present unique challenges for lexicographers. Drawing from qualitative analysis, the study identifies three central problem areas: (1) stability versus instability of idiomatic forms, (2) multi-word complexity and lexical evolution, and (3) idiomaticity and transparency. Findings reveal that idioms frequently appear in multiple lexical variants, complicating their classification and interpretation. Furthermore, many idioms evolve over time, leading to inconsistencies in dictionary entries and confusion among users. The degree of transparency of idioms also varies, with some being highly opaque and difficult to interpret without cultural or contextual knowledge. These issues highlight the limitations of traditional dictionary models in addressing the dynamic and figurative nature of idiomatic language. The study concludes by recommending a more phraseological and pattern-driven approach to lexicography, emphasizing the integration of idiom families, historical context, and usage-based explanations to better serve language learners and users. This research contributes to the field of lexicology and lexicography by offering practical insights for improving idiom representation in monolingual dictionaries.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze language acquisition in children aged 4–6 years at tkit nusintama from a sociopragmatic perspective. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through observation and interviews with tk b teachers. The findings reveal that the children have mastered various sentence types—declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory—and can apply them appropriately in different communicative contexts. From a sociopragmatic standpoint, the children demonstrate the ability to adapt their language use to different situations, interlocutors, and politeness norms, such as turn-taking in conversations. Key factors supporting their language development include active social interaction, the role of teachers as communication facilitators, a conducive learning environment, and family involvement in home language activities. These findings indicate that the children at tkit nusintama exhibit strong language abilities and age-appropriate sociopragmatic development.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain information and analyze the implementation of online learning after Covid-19, identify and analyze online learning methods that impact student learning difficulties, and identify and analyze online learning methods that impact student psychology. This study using the approach Qualitative, with a phenomenological type of research . The subject selection technique was carried out using the method purposive sampling of data sources obtained from respondents through observation and interviews. The results of the study found that 1) The implementation of the online learning method after Covid-19 has been running well. The learning system with a combination of online and offline has sufficiently facilitated students' needs in mastering the subject matter with the aim of achieving optimal learning outcomes. 2) The online learning method has an impact on student learning difficulties due to student saturation and boredom with the learning system and limited social relationships. In addition, saturation with the routine of many assignments, less than optimal material delivery makes students experience various obstacles in learning, with their limitations students try to be independent in learning. 3) The online learning method has an impact on students' psychology. Students are very human, various factors that influence it, namely internal factors regarding ability, discipline, responsibility and independence. Meanwhile, external factors are dominated by various academic demands from schools, the need to achieve good achievements and learning outcomes as demands from themselves, family, and school, as well as actualization of community recognition as a social demand in society. Both of these factors trigger academic stressors so that student stress levels become one of the psychological impacts for students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of event photo media on the writing ability of editorial text writing. The type of method in this study is a quasi-experimental with a quantitative approach to measure the results objectively on the ability to write editorial text through event photo media. In this study, it can be seen that the average value obtained from the post-test results of students in the experimental class is 79.85 and 62.50 in the control class. After the post-test, the next step the author conducted a prerequisite test which included a normality test and a homogeneity test. The prerequisite test was carried out as a requirement for hypothesis testing. After the normality test, the experimental class p-value was 0.455> 0.05 and the control class p-value was 0.060> 0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that both classes are normally distributed. The homogeneity test that the author has conducted obtained significant results of 0.071> 0.05 (significant level). Thus, both classes come from homogeneous variants. The results of the hypothesis test conducted, the calculated t result = 2.514 > t table 1.671 then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So it can be concluded that there is a difference in the learning outcomes of students who use event photo media learning media with the learning outcomes of students who use conventional media. The learning outcomes using event photo media are better than the learning outcomes of students who use conventional media in learning to write editorial texts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the academic and emotional contribution of peer mentoring practices in the thesis writing process in students of the English Language Studies Program at IAIN Curup. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach involving six final year students who act as mentors and mentees through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory observations, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study show that peer mentoring plays a significant role in helping students understand the feedback of the supervisor, improve their writing structure, and improve their understanding of research methodology and data analysis. In addition, peer mentoring also provides important emotional support, such as increasing students' motivation, confidence, and academic resilience during the thesis writing process.
