Abstract

Gender representation in textbooks has a powerful impact on students’ perceptions and social identities. Unbalanced gender portrayal can influence how students view their roles and opportunities in society. This study aimed to investigate how gender is represented in educational material, English for Nusantara textbook for eighth-grade students. A mixed-method design was employed, combining content analysis and discourse analysis, to examine how often male and female characters are represented in the textbook. Brugeilles and Cromer's (2009) model was employed to inform analysis, focusing on the frequency of activities, roles, and characters' appearances. The findings revealed that male and female characters appear in nearly equal numbers however traditional gender roles are still dominated. Male characters are more frequently depicted in physical, competitive, and public roles, such as workers and rescuers, while female characters are more often shown in domestic, educational, and cultural contexts. These findings suggest that numerical balance does not necessarily indicate gender equality in representation. The study highlights the need for more diverse and equitable representation of both genders in educational materials. It also suggests that future research explores students' perceptions of gender and how teachers address gendered content in classroom settings to support more inclusive English language learning.

The results show that teachers use a range of strategies to students to helph typical pronunciation issues, including drilling, repetition, using the native speakers audio, the direct method, visual audio, etc. Teachers say using these strategies helps students pronounce words correctly and boosts their confidence when speaking Indonesian. Disparities in student competency and a lack of resources were noted as barriers to successful adoption, nevertheless.According to teachers, incorporating these techniques greatly enhances pupils' confidence when speaking Indonesian and helps them pronounce words correctly. However, obstacles to successful implementation were identified, including disparities in student competency and a lack of resources. The study ends with suggestions for creating focused training courses for BIPA teachers to improve their teaching methods and raise pronunciation proficiency among students. These revelations advance our knowledge of successful language teaching strategies in multilingual settings.

Abstract

Acquiring vocabulary is a crucial aspect of language acquisition as it facilitates conversation, reading, and writing. However, many traditional teaching methods make learning vocabulary feel boring and difficult for students. Students often face problems like forgetting new words easily, lack of practice, and uninteresting lessons. Baamboozle application, a game-based learning tool, might help solve these problems, but there is not much research on its effectiveness. This study aims to find out if Baamboozle application can improve students’ vocabulary better than traditional methods. It also looks at whether using Baamboozle application makes learning more fun and engaging for students. The study was done with seventh-grade students at SMPN Karang Jaya. There were two groups: one group used Baamboozle application, and the other group used traditional methods. Both groups took a test before and after the study to see their vocabulary progress. The results were then compared using statistical analysis. The study found that the Baamboozle application significantly improved students' vocabulary knowledge, as seen by the experimental group's higher average score of 78 compared to the control group's score of 69.83. It showed that the group using Baamboozle application improved their vocabulary more than the group using traditional methods. Students also felt more motivated and interested in learning. This study shows that using game-based tools like Baamboozle application can make learning vocabulary easier and more enjoyable.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines strategies for improving speaking proficiency in Indonesian Language for Foreign Learners (ILFL) through culturally integrated instruction. Using qualitative data from interviews with 15 learners and 10 instructors, five key strategies were identified: task-based learning, cultural immersion, peer interaction, constructive feedback, and multimedia use. These methods provide learners with real-life contexts, reduce speaking anxiety, and build confidence. Cultural immersion, in particular, enhances learners’ understanding of Indonesian society and supports meaningful communication. Peer activities promote collaboration and fluency, while multimedia resources expose learners to natural speech and varied accents. The findings confirm the value of integrating cultural content into ILFL teaching practices. This study recommends incorporating these strategies into ILFL curriculum and teacher training programs to foster both linguistic and intercultural competence among learners.
