Abstract

Kemampuan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris secarakritis sangat diperlukan oleh mahasiswa karena kemampuantersebut menjadi prasarat penting bagi mahasiswa untuk menggalipengetahuan lebih dalam, yang pada umumnya masih ditulis dalambahasa Inggris. Saat ini ketrampilan membaca teks bahasa Inggrissecara kritis lazimnya hanya diberikan kepada mahasiswa JurusanSastra dan Bahasa Inggris. Dengan melihat kebutuhan yang sama,mahasiswa Jurusan non Sastra dan Bahasa Inggris pun perlu diberibekal ketrampilan membaca kritis. Untuk itu, kelas bahasa Inggrisuntuk jurusan non Sastra dan Bahasa Inggris perlu diarahkan untukmenguasai ketrampilan membaca kritis dengan memperkenalkan"˜active reading habit' kepada para mahasiswanya. Abstract

This article is based on a research conducted within a limitedscope (that is, within the community of the state university knownas Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta) on some phonoorthographicandortho-phonologic ambiguity found in spoken and written varietiesof Indonesian. By means of comparisons followed with sociophonologicanalyses, findings as follows are obtained. (1) Phonoorthographicambiguity results in two forms: (a) the articulation of[h] which should be nonexistent between [a] and [u] or [i] and (b)the articulation of [a] instead of [i] in Indonesian names originallyJavanese. (1) Ortho-phonologic ambiguity results in two forms: (a)the writing of a final o instead of a in Indonesian names originallyJavanese and (b) the writing ofa final o instead of a in Indonesianterms originally Javanese. Abstract

The study on the ideological perspective in this articleuses a critical discourse analysis that views discourse as action byconsidering certain context, historical context, element of power,and ideology. The material of analysis consists of newspaper reportsabout the discourse coming from various figures during the time ofthe Golkar Party Convention from its beginning to Wiranto's electionas the presidential candidate nominated by the party. Abstract

This article first presents the Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG), developed by Halliday (1985, 1994) and Halliday andMatthiessen (2003), one grammar that can be used in languageanalysis. Then it describes briefly the use of the Systemic Coder (SC),a computational tool developed by O'Donnell (1994) that is especiallybeneficial for linguists to employ in language analysis based on SFGwhen they have to deal with huge corpora and need quick resultsas it facilitates getting comprehensive data characteristics in arelatively short time. SC is applicable in Indonesia as its platform isthe commonly used MSWord and it can be utilized in analyzing anylanguage employing the Latin alphabet. There are other advantagesof SC application, which understandably requires, among others,one's mastery of SFG.Keywords: systemic functional grammar, systemic coder, languageanalysis

Abstract

Goenawan Mohamad's poems have interestingcharacteristics especially in the use of idiomatic and symbolicexpressions related to the dimension of time. In addition, his specialthematic choices involving human beings within the frame of thetime flow enable his poetry to say many things.It is the nature of human beings to be between a beginningand end points in time, the former signifying a process from beingnonexistent to being existent at birth and the latter from beingexistent back to being nonexistent at death. A description of time aspart of human beings' journey of life is what is often presented inGoenawan Mohamad's poems.Keywords: time, monochronic, polychronic

Abstract

Aceh language have similarity with Campa language. So,there are two language which have many similarities vocabulary. Thetheritory of Aceh and Campa is located in the north east of Sumateraisland (Vietnamese). There are Austronesian language grouping.In past, Aceh language have effect from other like Arabic,Netherland, Pourtouguese, Espana, and Chinese.This article explaining the retention and inovation aboutAeh language by reflection of their vocabulary with Austronesiaprotofonem. Austronesian protofonem is the list of the reconstructionof the individual language: Tagalog, Toba-Batak, Java, Malay, Ngaju-Dayak, and Hova. Abstract

A mind map is a graphic form showing how related ideasare organized. Useful as a graphic organizer of ideas, it is a conceptmap made on the basis of the principles of how the brain works, thatis, through association and imagination, simultaneously maximizingthe function of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Its essenceis that the main idea is placed in the middle and then, regarded asits center, it is then connected with lines to supporting ideas havingcertain associations with it.A mind map can be used to help develop skills in writing andreading texts written in such a language as German. In developinglearners' writing skills, it is to be employed before they write acomposition, functioning in this case as a tool for organizing ideasand seeing relations between them and also as guidance in writing acomposition. In developing reading skills, it can be employed in thepre-reading phase as an advance organizer enabling readers to havea general idea of the contents of the text. It can also be employedafter the reading activity to help give readers training in organizingthe information in the text.Keywords: mind map, writing and reading skills

Abstract

This study was conducted by using postcolonialism theory.This study of postcolonialism, focused on mimikri or indigene'simitation to Dutch colonials in Sitti Nurbaya novel by Marah Rusli,intended to uncover and describe some aspect of Dutch colonialismculture which they were imitated by indigene society. This study alsoattempt to describe fiction element that was used by writer to conveyimitation of Dutch colonialism culture.This study showed that ini the novel of Sitti Nurbaya byMarah Rusli was found mimikri to Dutch colonialism which wasexecuted by the characters. They are Sitti Nurbaya, Samsul Bahri,Datuk Maringgih, Arifm, and Bachtiar. Well, the Dutch colonialismculture that was imitated by them are (1) language, (2) feast andequipment of human life (clothes and weapon), (3) work system(trade), (4) artistry (art of music and art of movement), and (5)science. Abstract

A verb with a preposition here refers to a verb with apreposition following it in use. So a verb to be used that way differsfrom a verb phrase; the latter consists of one main element with atleast one other element added to it while the former consists of a verband a preposition with neither being a main element nor an addedelement. Therefore, a verb phrase is endocentric in nature while averb with a preposition is exocentric in nature.A verb with a preposition can be with or without an affix.The affixes commonly used in such verbs are, among others, ber-,ber-an, and ber-kan (as used in, for example, berfungsi sebagai,berkenaan dengan, and berdasarkan atas); di-, di-kan, di-i, anddiper-kan (as used in, for example, dibagi atas, diarahkan kepada,diikuti oleh, and dipergunakan sebagai); me(N)- (as used in, forexample, mengarah pada and mengacu ke); and ter- and ter-kan (asused in, for example, tergantung pada, terdiri atas, and terbedakandari). Meanwhile, the prepositions used with such verbs can be (1)single prepositions without affixes (such as, di, ke, dari, pada, atas,and dengan) or with affixes (such as, sebagai, terhadap, menjadi,and mengenai) or (2) combined prepositions used side by side (suchas, kepada, daripada, ke dalam, and di dalam) or in pairs (such as,antara dan ...; antara dengan ...; and dari hingga ...). In addition,the presence of some prepositions after some verbs (as that in, forexample, berkembang menjadi and berdomisili di) is obligatorywhile that of some other prepositions after some other verbs (as thatin, for example, berbicara tentang, dihadiri oleh, and terdiri atas/dari) is optional.Keywords: verb, preposition, verb with preposition
