Abstract

This research study employs the theory of narrative structure by SeymourChatman. The study aims to describe plot elements comprising kernel and satellite, arrangement, duration, and frequency available in Orang-orang Proyek, a novel byAhmad Tohari. The subject of the study was Orang-orang Proyek (2002, the first impression), anovel by Ahmad Tohari, and the focuses were plot elements covering kernel andsatellite, arrangement, duration, and frequency. The data were collected throughreading and recording. The novel was read and reread and its discourse andsentential and sub-sentential units containing narrative elements were recorded. The data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative technique. The research findings show that Orang-orang Proyek contains 44 kernels and132 satellites. On the basis of its logical order, it reveals that causality order can beparallel with temporal order. Chronologically, the beginning of the story also results, though not directly, in subsequent events. From the relation between the past and thepresent, the novel shows a tendency that the analeptic occurring before the presentwas almost the same as that occurring after the present. The novel contains 20 externalanachronisms, 18 mixed anachronisms, and 13 internal anachronisms. The durationincludes, from the most to the least, scene, summary, distraction, pause, and ellipsis. The dominance of scene, followed by summary, shows that the narrator’s role in thestory is very small; most parts of the story are expressed through dialogues amongcharacters to make it more interesting. Singular events dominate frequency in thenovel, followed by iterative frequency, multiple-singular frequency, and repetitivefrequency. Dominant singular events make the novel more lively and interesting.Key words: narrative structure, arrangement, duration, and frequency

Abstract

This research objective is to describe two things, namely (1) the manifestations ofalienation and (2) characterization elements employed to describe human alienationin Pol, a novel by Putu Wijaya. These two things are related to the worldview adoptedby Putu Wijaya as a writer in response to the sociohistoricalcondition in society. The source of the data in this study was Putu Wijaya’s Pol (the first impression,1987). The data were collected through reading and recording. The data analysiscovered two aspects, namely (1) the structural aspect, and (2) the genetic aspect of theliterary work, the writer’s worldview. The validity was assessed through semanticvalidity and the reliability was assessed by reading and rereading (intraraterreliability). On the basis of the research findings and analysis, some inferences can be made.First, alienation in Pol on the basis of its manifestations can be classified into threecategories, namely (a) loneliness, (b) spiritual emptiness, and (c) disappointment.Second, characters’ alienation symptoms are expressed through characterizationelements, comprising (a) the writer’ s description of characters, (b) characters’thoughts, (c) characters’ actions, and (d) minor characters’ reactions to the maincharacter. A literary work as a life model or an alternative world is always relatedto the real life. In the novel, Putu Wijaya posits himself as a photographer of thesociety’s life.

Abstract

This research study intends to reveal the extent to which Larung (2001), as arecent Indonesian novel, shows postmodern features, especially in its construction, concerning the worlds under erasure and the Chinese box worlds. The theory adopted in the study is that of postmodern fiction by Brian McHale. The method employed is semiotics by Hurshovsky. The theory and method are basedon the assumption that postmodern fiction is ontological in nature. This is differentfrom modern fiction, which is epistemological in nature. According to McHale, theontological nature comprises zones, construction, words, and groundings. Thisstudy investigates, in particular, the construction in Larung. The research findings show that in Larung there are features classified by McHaleinto construction, covering the worlds under erasure and the Chinese box worlds. In the former, Larung explores the features proposed by McHale, namely somethingalways happening, something always existing, excluded middles, forking paths, and a sense of a (non) ending. In the latter Larung also explores features proposedby McHale, namely moving toward infinite regression, trompe-l’oell, strange loops, characters in search of an author, abysmal fictions, and something real. However,in terms of moving toward infinite regression Larung shows opposite features; itdoes not narrate things backward continuously, but it moves backward and forwardto the present. Therefore, Larung can be classified as novel with a postmodernconstruction.

Abstract

This research study aims to describe (1) the forms of Soeharto-related aspectsand (2) ways of expressing those aspects in the anthology of short stories entitledSuharto claim Cerpen Indonesia. The source of the research data was Soeharto dalam cerpen Indonesia (2001), ananthology of short stories edited by M. Shoim Anwar. All of the short stories (17)were selected. The data were collected through reading and recording techniques andwere analyzed by the descriptive qualitative technique involving data comparison, categorization, tabulation, and inference. Data trustworthiness was assessed throughthe semantic and referential validities and data consistency through the intraratertechnique.Research findings show that 15 short stories clearly contain Soeharto-relatedaspects, and two short stories do not reveal these aspects clearly. Soeharto-relatedaspects are shown through: (1) personification in the form of physical appearance, character, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, (ii) governance and economic strategies,(iii) society’s condition and attitude under his reign, approaching his fall and after hisfall, (iv) spatial and temporal settings related to his reign, (v) the party functioning ashis power apparatus, and (vi) government officials’ life style and attitude. In generalthe short stories do not mention Soeharto directly, but only through certain aspectsor symbols easily identified as Soeharto’s characteristics. Soeharto-related aspectsare expressed through various ways, such as parody, irony, cynicism, and dialectics. The expressions through particular characters parodying Soeharto are the mostapparent, simultaneously using irony and cynicism. The expressions through ironyare the most dominant in the short stories, and in this way the criticisms sound moresubtle and “polite”. This is different from cynicism, which criticizes and defamesones in a vulgar manner. This is a reflection of control imposed on the writers in thepast, who now feel free to express anything without any fear of being arrested. Theexpressions through dialectics are made more intellectually and invite readers tothink.Key words: Soeharto-related aspects, personification, parody, irony, cynicism, dialectics

Abstract

This research study aims to describe the rules of ellipsis in compound andcomplex sentences. The sources of the data were two newspapers, Kompas andKedaulatan Rakyat, the edition of March 2002. The data were collected by usingobservation and recording techniques. They were then analyzed by the substitutionmethod. On the basis of this method, the omission and substitution techniques wereemployed.Based on the analysis of the findings, the subject, predicate and object ellipsiscan be found in compound sentences and the subject ellipsis in complex sentences. The rules of ellipsis in compound sentences are that (1) the omission can be doneif the omitted element is the same; (2) the omission of the subject and predicate isalways made in the clause after the coordinative conjunction and the omission of theobject is made in the clause before the coordinative conjunction; (3) the referentialcharacteristic of the omitted element is always anaphoric. The rules of ellipsis incomplex sentences are that (1) the omitted element must be the same; (2) the omittedelement is in the clause preceded by a subordinative conjunction or the dependentclause; (3) the referential characteristic of the omitted element is cataphoric oranaphoric.
