Abstract

The world knows many types of leadership, one of which is servant leadership pioneered by Greenleaf (1977). According to Spears (2010), servant leadership has 10 main characteristics that make it unique. These characteristics enable a leader to focus on his/her followers and strive to make them grow better, unlike other leadership styles that focus on organizational interests and goals (Rachmawati and Lantu, 2014). This practice of servant leadership started by Jesus Christ continues to be emulated and lived by many figures after Him. Unfortunately, not all people who claim to be Christians (followers of Christ) actually become servant leaders. This study aims to explore whether the main characteristics of servant leadership really emerge in leaders and still relevant to be practiced in church life today. We will focus on exploring servant leadership practices at FS Community, the youth community of GKA Gloria Pacar, using observation, interview, and document analysis. The ten characteristics that discussed in this research are listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community. These are not a requirement that all must be prominent in each leader, but rather are the traits of servant leaders. It means, the more these characters are seen in a person, the more he/she has a heart that is willing to serve, and the closer he/she is to the picture of a perfect servant leader. Although perfection is not possible because we are only limited human beings, these ten characters must be a dream to be pursued by leaders who claim themselves as servant leaders.

Abstract

Indonesian batik has been recognized by UNESCO as the intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia. The ironic thing happened when Indonesian batik export is rejected by the market of European Union because of wearing artificial dyes and thus is categorized as eco unfriendly product. The chemical waste of artificial dyeing process can cause damage to environment and skin health of batik users. Therefore, the research and publication of natural dyeing materials and techniques in batik is needed to disseminate the techniques to craftmen and promote the use of green batik as a life style. In this paper, we discuss the art and sustainable aspects of natural dyeing in the making process of Kanawida Batik, one famous home industry of green batik in Banten and DKI Jakarta provinces. Using case study research method, we examine the art characteristics and implementation of sustainability requirements in the natural dyeing. The several results are: (1) knowledge about natural color sources and methods to produce it from natural materials, especially that are came from the richness and variety of Indonesian plants, (2) the manual and art characteristics of natural dyeing, (3) knowledge about how to implement sustainability in home industry of batik.

Abstract

Runner is a part of channel systems that flows the molten plastics from the sprue to the gate with a specified layout. The selection of runner shapes are according to the design of the mold and the product. Usually, the diameter of half round runner is calculated by the existing empirical formula. Predictably, the dimension of the runner is one of the factors that will be influencing the injection process and the resulting product. The objectives of experiment are to know how big the runner diameter that will be influencing the taken response and to prove that the existing empirical formula for calculating the diameter of runner is efficient. The experiment is designed by Taguchi method using Minitab applications to generate data of the influences of the runner diameter. The responses of this experiment are cycle time and product mass. The experiment is conducted by using the door handle products with Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene as known as ABS material. Besides diameter of runner, there are also other factors from parameters of injection process to be considered, they are nozzle temperature and injection pressure. In reference to Taguchi method, the authors took nine times experiment with three replications or repetitions for each data of experiment. The data from experiment were analyzed and calculated by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using Minitab applications to generate the results of experiment. As a result, the diameter of the runner had impact on the responses taken, either to cycle time and product mass as well. In conclusion, the runner diameter was ranked as the most influential compared to nozzle temperature and injection pressure

Abstract

Modern minimalist, Mediterranean and Modern tropical style are commonly found architecture styles in residences in Surabaya in the past decade. However, it is ironic that most of the styles are imported products which have different response level towards the local climate due to the fact that they are not designed for humid tropical areas. Thus, the choice of style has become really important so that the building can respond well to climate. This research was conducted on three architecture styles with three variants of each in a residential area in East Surabaya. This paper evaluates thermal performances and the influence of envelope elements on the thermal conditions in each sample house and evaluates which style that is potentially applicable to the humid tropical climate by using simulation method with the assistance of ECOTECT software. The results show that the variant B of modern minimalist style has the best envelope performance. Overall, house envelope with the original design is not effective enough. Design modification with good and suitable elements for the B variant of the Modern minimalist and Mediterranean turn out to be resulting in a more effective in solving thermal problems.

Abstract

Recently, there are many train accidents occurred in Indonesia where train collision contributes most of the causes. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) as state-owned enterprise that is responsible in monitoring train movement has not implemented a real time monitoring system. Thus, the current monitoring system relies on radio communication between train stations and train driver. In this paper, we propose a system to assist PT KAI to monitor train activities in a real time fashion. The system is implemented on a web based application. This web-based monitoring application equipped with complete station and train data in Java and Sumatra Islands. All trains latitude and longitude positions are retrieved through an embedded GPS device on train and the longitude and latitude data are then submitted to database server. At the server, the data is displayed in Google Maps accessible to authorized users. With this real time train monitoring system, PT KAI can track all train positions simultaneously. Therefore, the operating trains can be notified should a train collision potential is detected. Thus, the safety of rail passengers will be more assured.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical study and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a double cylinder inline 650cc gasoline engine with crank angle 0o for rubber mount. Numerical study was done by mathematically modeling a double cylinder inline 650cc gasoline engine with crank angle 0o for rubber mount and simulating its dynamic behavior for 3 different connecting rod lengths:115.6mm, 125.6mm, and 135,6mm. Its mathematical model was developed from the physical model of engine produced by local manufacturer. All parameters used in the simulation are based on the engine specification provided by the manufacturer. In the mathematical model, connecting rod length was varied to investigate its influence to the engine’s dynamic behavior. Here, the engine system was modeled as a spring-mass-damper system excited by a periodic force produced by the cylinder working pressure with various excitation frequencies from 1000rpm to 5000rpm. The engine’s dynamic behavior was indicated by vertical motion (bouncing) and angular motion (pitching) of the engine mass, which is presented in displacement, velocity and acceleration. The results show that connecting rod length does not influence the engine’s dynamic behavior. Further, the increase in engine’s angular speed/excitation frequency influence significantly the engine’s dynamic behavior. The detail results of this study are reported and discussed in the paper.
