Ventilation shaft can be used in apartment units to provide cross ventilation by creating a pressure difference between the room’s windward opening and outlet at the roof. The previous research about ventilation shaft has shown its potential in providing good natural ventilation in high-rise apartment building. This paper examines the influence of ventilation shaft aperture configuration on its ability to generate air movement and uniform flow distribution. The experiment is carried out using computational fluid dynamics with RNG k-e calculation method. Ventilation shaft system with a uniform aperture can produce very high air velocity only at the top floor while ventilation shaft system with internal aperture size increased from the upper floor to the lower floor can produce better air flow distribution

Rapid development of high-rise apartments, which rely on mechanical cooling, would increase energy consumption. Courtyard existed in various geometries of ahigh-rise apartment in Surabaya as a result of useful layout configuration. The court-yard is one of the passive cooling strategies in vernacular building and is reportedto reduce a building’s energy consumption. The size of the courtyard affects the per-formance of the courtyard. In high-rise courtyard apartments in Surabaya, there isa wide variation of building width and length, affecting the courtyard aspect ratio. This paper investigates the result of annual cooling energy of different courtyardaspect ratio on five apartment geometries with courtyard: H Geometry, U Geom-etry, Double U Geometry, Double L Geometry, and Quadruple L Geometry. Themethod of this research is experimental research with simulation as a tactic. Design-Builder by EnergyPlus is used as simulation tools in this research. The result revealsthat a courtyard with an aspect ratio of 1:2 tends to perform better than a squarecourtyard. Elongating the courtyard of H and U Geometry would reduce the annualcooling energy in all orientations. Elongating the courtyard of Double U, Double L,and Quadruple L Geometries would reduce the annual cooling energy in northwest-southeast orientation and increase annual cooling energy if the building is elongatedalongside the northeast axis..

Rumah susun (walk up flat) are one of the buildings that rely on natural ventilation. However, the application of natural ventilation in rumah susun (walk up flat) in urban areas is influenced by tropical climate problems such as high temperatures and low wind speeds. The design of the openings in the facade has not been able to distribute air into rooms properly. In addition, the layout design makes single-sided natural ventilation the only strategy possible for double loaded corridor type flat. This study aimed to determine the effect of a combination of pivot window designs and wing walls in directing and distribute air into room. The study was conducted in two stages, that was field measurements and experimental with Computational Fluids Dynamics simulations. Simulations were conducted on a combination designs of wing walls and pivot window with 45o and 90o opening angles to determine their effects on the distribution and indoor air velocity. The combination design of wing walls and pivot window created a pressure difference so that it could increase indoor air velocity under both oblique and parallel to the opening. In the direction of the wind that was not oriented to the openings, the combination of wing walls and vertical pivot windows with 90o opening angles increased indoor air velocity up to five times in the corner room. While the 45o opening angle increased the indoor air velocity up to seven times than base case condition in a middle room.

The spread and pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that is currently happening in the world, has led to new policy steps in the security of public spaces to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and protect public health. There is new adaptation in the policies while using space like limiting the use of public spaces, increasing social distancing between people or creating territory. Territory means specific area where are claimed or maintained (can be physically, through ruler or symbols). Territory can give a sense of security to the users. Therefore, this paper give insight and rethinking the territory concept as sense of security in interior public space and built environment where people expect to see strangers in this space. The methods in this paper are literature review method by collecting and synthesizing previous research using integrative approach. For the result is territory concept achieved as part of protection to the users in the build environment with mechanisms that should be applied in each type: the boundary between areas; limitation to the symbolic; supervision and control of space.

Each settlement has specific characteristics and characteristics based on their respective backgrounds. Gang Nibung Samarinda is an urban kampong settlement on the banks of the Karang Mumus River of Samarinda City. Characteristics of riverside settlements are different from settlements that do not have rivers, these characteristics can be reviewed from how the community adapts to be able to use space on housing and environment in riverside city villages. The community adapts to be able to meet its needs causing changes in residential space and environmental space. Characteristics of the condition of the Gang nibung settlement site, which is mainly surrounded by rivers, make the orientation of occupancy facing towards the river makes the space on the riverbank becomes used space for its people. This study uses field study methods in reviewing space adaptation activities in riverside villages. This research uses field study methods in reviewing space adaptation activities in the riverside village environment. The results showed that the adaptability pattern of space is influenced by the pattern of the type of clarity of the activity that is accommodated, the pattern of openness of the design of a space, and the pattern of the relationship of space with the surrounding environment.

This study is about night ventilation in dry climates often related to thermal mass. All the opening closed during daytime, to provide lower indoor temperature. According to bioclimatic context, Surabaya as warm humid reference, air movement is needed to restore humidity for all the time. This research concerned in promoting air movement, in order to maintain thermal comfort during night time. Opening schedule is proposed as factor which contributes the function of night ventilation in warm humid climate. Simulations were performed in steady state conditions, used models based on expanded-type 60 houses of grid pattern housing estates in Surabaya. 2 model site plan used as case studies. Air movement in bed room and living room has been investigated to maintain thermal comfort. Results show that night time ventilation in warm humid climate is accomplished by outdoor and indoor space configurations. The windows and door are proposed to open at 5.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. For supporting night time ventilation in warm humid, the outdoor space configurations are determined by building coverage ratio of 50-60%, 0.7 H/W at backside of building for wind paralell to the street or 1.3 H/W for wind perpendicular to the street. Occupants could expand thermal comfort zone with air flow of 0.4-0.8 m/sec for wind parralel to the street and 0.4-0.55 for wind perpendicular to the street.

Global warming is an issue that trend today. Awareness needed to perform its main energy efficiency is the energy cooling operations. Its because energy is related to the operational life of the thermal comfort of occupants to perform daily activities. This paper identifies residential design typology of house type 60 as a building envelope design and configuration space. The research determines the thermal performance and explore a simple house type 60 for its energy efficiency. In general, this paper aims to identify the typology of house type 60 that is associated with the operational cooling energy savings, as well as opportunities for what can be done to conserve energy by using architecture bioclimatic approach. The main benefits expected is to provide guidance on design concepts (via the model) based energy efficient cooling for modest residential type 60 in the humid tropics in order to conserve energy and create a healthy neighborhood. It need the dweller to adopt what they want to be in their own house. The fourth dimension in housing is a strenght that enable people to materialise their house to what they envisioned and using it to achieved what they intended to be.
