Abstract

Introduction: Reading is a very complex process, which includes the cognitive process, initialized by visual analysis and letter transformation into vocabulary form, word identification by letter sound mapping, correlating words and interpretation. Deafness causes difficulties in acquiring language information via hearing process thus inhibiting a successful conversation process. Hearing aids can amplify sound information to the auditory organs. Objective: To know the effect of hearing aids on deaf students. Methods: A historical cohort design was done. The reading ability of 35 deaf students with hearing aids who received early education were compared to those without hearing aids. The variables measured included age, age of school enrollment, length of studies, degree of deafness, sex, parental educational level. Results: Regression analysis showed that hearing aids plays a role to significantly increase reading ability statistically (p: 0.006; OR: 10.197; 95% CI: 1.939-53.628) compared to students without hearing aids, besides the length of studies variable (p: 0.002; OR: 38.250: 95% CI: 3.739-391.361). Conclusion: This study concluded that the use of hearing aids significantly play a role to increase reading ability in deaf students who receive early education. Key words: hearing aids - deaf student - reading ability.

Abstract

Key Words: holism - traditional medicine - modern medicine - concept of disease - traditional

Abstract

Background : Glycosilation is a reaction between protein and glucose in high concentration. The basic of this reaction is the continuous increase of glucose concentration, followed by a hooking between glucose with the amin primary structure of the protein. Beside form the AGEs, glycosilation reaction forms free radicals as the side product. The free radical reaction with the protein forms a crosslinking of the protein and then change the structure of the protein. Objectives : This research was carried out to know glycosilation reaction model and the role of madagascar periwinkle ICatharanthus roseus ELI G. Don)' s leaves infusion as protein damage inhibitor. Method : This research is an experimental and explorative research. This research was carried out in two steps, the making of infusion and the test for protein damage inhibition by using the infusion of madagascar periwinkle' s leaves and glyclazide.Result : The activity of madagascar periwinkle's leaves infusion to inhibit the protein damage is 21,29% while the activity of glyclazide is 96,77%.Conclusion : The infusion of madagascar periwinkle (Caiharanihus roseus EL.] G. Don)'s leaves can inhibit the protein damage because of the glycosilation reaction but lower than the glyclazide's.Key words : Madagascar periwinkle - glycosilation - free radical - protein damage

Abstract

Background: The alcoholic extract of kluthuk banana (Musa balbisiana Colla), a seeded banana, has been known to reduce gastric acid secretion on rats, but there is no explanation which part of kluthuk banana having that effect. Objective: To determine the effect of kluthuk banana both flesh and seed on rats gastric acid secretion in vitro. Methods: This study was conducted using isolated Wistar rat stomach. Fifty-four rats of 175-225 g weight were devided into 9 groups, each consisted of 3 male and 3 female rats. The stomach was suspended in an organ bath containing buffered serosal solution, and the gastric lumen was perfused continuously with unbuffered mucosal solution. The isolated preparation was stabilized for 5 times within 1 h and perfusate was spilled out. The perfusate was allowed to flow continuously, collected for 10 minutes duration and Fl+ concentration was measured, as basal FI4- concentration. Pretreatment was added to the unbuffered mucosal solution for 30 minutes, after which, histamine was added to the unbuffered mucosal solution for 80 minutes to induce gastric secretion. Perfusate from gastric lumen were collected every 10 minutes and FP-concentration was measured. The elevation of H* concentration was calculated in percentage, and was expressed as means ± SEM. ANOVA was used to analysis the data. Results: The elevation of H* concentration of groups treated with alcoholic extract of kluthuk banana seed at 12.46, 24.92 and 49.84 mg/kgBW was significantly lower than control group (p0.05).Conclusion: Alcoholic extract of kluthuk banana seed reduced rat gastric acid secretion in vitro, but did not those of alcoholic extract of kluthuk banana flesh. Keywords: Musa balbisiana Colla - gastric acid secretion - histamine - rat - stomach

Abstract

A study on some anthropometry measurements of soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta had been done. The objective of the study was to investigate the differences of anthropometry measurements for different types of sport on soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 soccer players and 20 badminton players, with the age of 17 - 25 years. The t-test was used to know the differences of anthropometry measurements between soccer and badminton players. The results indicated that the average height, body weight, sitting height, biiliocristal breadth, upper arm and thigh girth of soccer players were significantly greater than those of badminton players. The biacromial breadth, calf girth, arm and total leg length between the two sport groups were not significantly different. There were somatotype differences between soccer and badminton players, and the major difference in the distribution of the two samples was that the soccer players were less endomorphic and ectomorphic than the badminton players.Further studies may explain those results with more consideration on different types of exercise performed by more samples.Key words: sport anthropology - soccer & badminton athletes - anthropometry somatotype bodymeasurements

Abstract

Although medical science and practice have developed for a long time in Indonesia, there are still many difficulties and confusions in the use of the medical nomenclature and terminology. This fact is due to the imbalance between the fast rate of transfer of science and the slow rate of 'language transfer', especially in the field of medicine. The main problems identified are:a. Which procedure should be chosen in the 'language transfer' and what should be done with the declination rule?b. How should the transfer be carried out in different fields of medical terminology? To anticipate these problems, five alternatives of language transfer' are forwarded, i., e.:'1. full adaptation,2. adaptation without declination,3. translation,4. full transcription, and5. transcription without declination. The last alternative is recommended to be used in IT/05t fields of medical terminology.Key Words: medical nomenclature - terminology - 'language transfer' - translation - transcription
