Abstract

Biofilm mode of growth is bacterial lifestyle widespread in microbial world and represents a concernin health care. Recently, serious problem concerning biofilm-related infection is increasing significantly.However complexity of biofilm makes it difficult to conduct proper analysis. Although biofilm representsa major challenge for microbiologist, methods aimed to determine biofilm formation and developmentare not standardized yet. The aim of the present review was to provide an overview of the advantagesand disadvantages of the difference in vitro methods for determining biofilm forming ability ofclinical isolates.

Abstract

suspected food poisoning outbreak of 5 cases was reported from Mergangsan primary health care to the Yogyakarta Health Office on July 24th 2017. Objective of this study were to ensure food poisoning outbreak and identify source and route of transmission. A total of 166 respondent was included. All of 83 cases got diarrhea. Epidemic curve showed a common source with incubation period 1-23,5 hours and median incubation was 12 hours. Based on its clinical symptoms and incubation period, this outbreak suspected caused by S.aureus contamination. Statistical analysis showed that the greatest attack rate ratio and odds ratio was found in rendang (AR 3,15 and OR 6,6135; 95% CI 2,7812-16,874). Limitation of this study was there were no sample of food/feces/vomit to confirm the agent.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The cytotoxic activity of a-terpineol on T47D and HeLa cancer cell lines have been reported. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a-terpineol on cell cycle, apoptosis and Bcl-2 as well as Bax expression on MCF-7 cell line. The cytotoxic activity of a-terpineol was determined using MTT cell assay. Cell cycle and apoptosis were analysed using flowcytometry, whereas Bcl-2 and Bax expression were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. The results showed that a-terpineol had cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 cell lines with an IC50 value of 33.0 ± 5.4 μg/mL. a-Terpineol induced cell accumulation in Sub-G1 lead to apoptosis of the MCF-7 cell. Moreover, a-terpineol inhibited Bcl-2 and induced Bax expressions. In conclusion, a-terpineol has potential anticancer activity against MCF-7 cancer cell line trough through cells cycle inhibition and apoptosis stimulation.

Abstract

Scoliosis in marfan syndrome (MFS) manifests on 60% patients. Moreover, the scoliosisnoticeable in earlier age is more progressive, refracted, and rigid compared to idiopathicadult scoliosis. The surgical correction provides notorious higher perioperative risk,whereas conservative treatment using brace is not effective to prevent progressivityof the scoliosis. In this a case report, we reported the surgical outcome of MFS scoliaispatients with MFS who operated using posterior fusion instrumentation by mean of thequality of life SF-36 questioner. This was a retrospective case series involving five MFSscoliosis patients who underwent posterior fusion instrumentation with initial Cobb angleof 87.417.57o and initial kyphotic angle of 32.8 ± 14.52o. Clinical, radiological andquality of life of the patients based on SF-36 questionnaire were evaluated within 6-36months follow up. Post-operative showed the Cobb angle become 46.2 ± 16.3o and thekyphotic angle become 21.6 ± 9.94o. No intraoperative or post-operative complicationswere observed. After 6-36 months follow up, the Cobb angle became 45.2 ± 17.48oand the kyphotic angle became 21.6 ± 9.94o. In addition, all patients had physical andmental health scored similar to 2 years post-surgery scoliosis scoring according to SF-36 orthopedic scoring guidelines. I conclusion, the surgical outcome of posterior fusioninstrumentation in MFS scoliosis showed good correction of Cobb angle and Kyphoticangle. The quality of life of the patients based on physical and mental health questionnaireis satisfactory.

Abstract

Women who carry a pathogenic mutation in the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 (BRCA) have markedly increased risks of developing breast and ovarian cancers during their lifetime. It has been estimated that their breast and ovarian cancer risks are in the range of 46-87% and 15-68%, respectively. Therefore it is of utmost clinical importance to identify BRCA mutation carriers in order to target unaffected women for prevention and/or close surveillance and to help affected women choose the best chemotherapy regimen.Genetic testing for BRCA germline mutations is expanding in clinical oncology centers worldwide. Given the high costs of complete BRCA gene screens, a lot of effort has been expended on deciding upon whom to test. Relevant issues involved in decision making include the prior probability of a woman having a BRCA mutation, which is a function of her age and her disease status, her ethnic group, and her family history of breast or ovarian cancer.The frequency and spectrum of mutations in these genes show considerable variation by ethnic groups and by geographic regions. Most studies have been conducted in European and North American populations, while studies in Asian, Hispanic, and African populations are fewer. In most populations, many BRCA mutations were identified, which were distributed all over the genes. However, in some populations, a relatively small number of specific BRCA mutations are recurrent and account for the majority of all mutations in that population. Many of the recurrent mutations are founder mutations, which were derived from a common ancestor. Founder mutations are present in Ashkenazi Jewish, European, and Islander (Faroe, Easter, and Pitcairn) populations. Such mutations have also been identified in patients from several Asian, South American, and African countries. Population-specific genetic risk assessment and genetic mutation screening have been facilitated at low costs. Given that mutations in the BRCA genes are distributed in populations throughout the world, it is important that the benefits of genetic testing and of targeted therapies be made available not only to women from developed countries in Europe and North America, but also to those from less developed countries in Asia, Africa and South America.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAlthough the spleen is frequently involved in disseminated non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), splenic presentation as the initial or only site of disease is uncommon. Treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The priority of cancer follow up is to perform surveillance for recurrent cancer and evaluation of treatment response. Side effects of treatment are frequently missed or overlooked. A 66-year-old woman was presented to our hospital with a month history of spleen enlargement. On physical examination the spleen was palpated at Schuffner 2. Abdominal MSCT scan was suggestive of lymphoma. Surgery revealed adhesion and obstruction of the stomach. Biopsy and gastrojejunostomy shunting were done, but splenectomy was difficult. The pathology anatomy findings confirmed the diagnosis of diffuse non Hodgkin’s lymphoma large B-cell type. Immunohistochemistry showed positive CD3 and CD20. She underwent 6 cycles of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine, and prednisolone (RCHOP) chemotherapy. CT evaluation done 7 months later revealed that the hilus lienalis lymph nodes and spleen has decrease in size. However, a lumbosacral x-ray done due to back pain revealed metastasis on her 1st and 2nd lumbal spine. After a single fraction of radiotherapy, nausea, vomiting and abdominal distension occurred. A 3 position abdominal x-ray revealed signs of small bowel obstruction. After surgery she has received 9 cycles of zoledronic acid and remained in good condition and ambulatory. Splenic presentation as the initial or only site of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is uncommon. Acute small bowel obstruction and fistula due to palliative radiation therapy for bone metastasis needs prompt and appropriate treatment.

Abstract

The menopausal transition or perimenopause is associated with numerous symptoms. Womenentering perimonopause normally have menstrual irregular periods due to an imbalance of serumestradiol. Since the status of estrogen is known as an important determinant of bone massdensity, menopausal symptoms can be an effective indicator of bone status in women. Thisstudy aimed to evaluate the relationship between perimenopause symptoms and bone mineraldensity (BMD). This was an observational study using cross-sectional design conducted duringthree months periode from June to August 2010 in Kalangan Village, Banguntapan, BantulDistrict. Subjects were women between the aged 46-55 years who fulfilled the inclusion andexclusion criteria. After underwent history taking, subjects underwent physical examinationaccording to International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). The BMD of subjects wasthan measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The relationship betweenperimenopause symptoms and BMD was then evaluated using multivariate analysis. The resultsshowed that perimenopause symptoms increase abnormal BMD of subjects 1.38 times higherthan those without perimenopause symptoms (RR=1.38; 95%CI 1.39-13.78; p=0.01). Inconclusion, the perimenopause symptoms is associated with the high proportion of abnormalBMD in women.

Abstract

Pediatric sensorineural hearing loss can cause delay in speech and daily socialcommunication. The causative factors are infectious or non infecious. The role ofinfectious risk factors in pediatric sensorineral hearing loss has been proven. However,the role of non infectious factors has not been reported, yet. The aim of the study was toevaluate the role of non infectious factors in pediatric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).This was a case control study using data collected from outpatients and medical recordsin Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta from June to December 2015. The inclusioncriteria of case group were children with SNHL and aged 0 – 5 years old, whereasthe inclusion criteria of control group was children with normal hearing and aged 0-5years old. The exclusion criteria were children with history of infectious risk factors andhead trauma. Hearing status were determined by Otoacoustic Emission Testing (OAE)and Brainstem Evoked Response Auditory (BERA), based on a= 5%, b = 20%; ORasumption = 3.0. Sixty two subjects were selected with 31 subjects in each group.Multivariate analysis showed that low birth weight (LBW) (p=0.018; OR=6.553; 95%CI=1.38 – 31.13) and asphyxia (p= 0.041; OR=6.448; 95% CI=1.077 – 38.595)were risk factors, while hyperbilirubinemia (p= 0.382; OR=2.46; 95% CI=0.365 –13.805) and gestation (p=0.876; OR=0.831; 95% CI=0.081 – 8.483) were not riskfactors for pediatric SNHL. In conclusion, LBW and asphyxia are risk factors for pediatricSNHL, whereas prematurity and hyperbilirubinemia are not risk factors.

Abstract

Training is conducted to improve physiological functions that can support improvementof cardio-respiratory function (O2max). However, intensive training can lead to oxidativestress, which can contribute to health problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluatethe effect of training on serum lipid peroxidation levels in student soccer players. Thestudy was pre-experimental study with a one-shot case design conducted in April 2014.Twelve student soccer players from UGM who chosen by purposive sampling and metthe inclusion and exclusion criteria were involved in the study. Each subject receivedtraining in the form of O2max measurements using the yo-yo intermittent recovery test.Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured using the thiobarbituric acidmethod 30 min after O2max measurement. Pearson correlation was used to analyzethe correlation between O2max and plasma MDA levels. The mean age of subject was19.25±1.06 years old. Subjects had normal nutritional status (body mass index 20.99± 1.65) with mean body weight of 58.13±3.76 kg and mean height of 166.2±3.40cm. The mean O2max score was 49.56±0.61 mL/kg/min. The mean plasma MDA levelwas 4.32±2.09 μmol/L. There was no significant correlation between O2max and plasmaMDA levels (p=0.7717). In conclusion, training does not negatively impact oxidativestress conditions in student soccer players.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Heart failure is divided into heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Additional studies are required to distinguish between these two types of HF. A previous study showed that HFrEF is less likely when ECG findings are normal. This study aims to create a scoring system based on ECG findings that will predict the type of HF. We performed a cross-sectional study analyzing ECG and echocardiographic data from 110 subjects. HFrEF was defined as an ejection fraction ≤40%. Fifty people were diagnosed with HFpEF and 60 people suffered from HFrEF. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed certain ECG variables that were independent predictors of HFrEF i.e., LAH, QRS duration >100 ms, RBBB, ST-T segment changes and prolongation of the QT interval. Based on ROC curve analysis, we obtained a score for HFpEF of -1 to +3, while HFrEF had a score of +4 to +6 with 76% sensitivity, 96% specificity, 95% positive predictive value, an 80% negative predictive value and an accuracy of 86%. The scoring system derived from this study, including the presence or absence of LAH, QRS duration >100 ms, RBBB, ST-T segment changes and prolongation of the QT interval can be used to predict the type of HF with satisfactory sensitivity and specificity
