Abstract

Post-traumatic syndrome is a constellation of symptoms that developed in a person usually following a relatively minor head injury. It can grossly in capacitating for the patient and can develop a chronicity that makes it almost a change in personality. The commonest symptoms are headache, and dizziness; but impairment of sleep, decreased concentration and libido, anxiety, depression, irritability and sensitivity to noise are also seen. The cause of the syndrome is a ,contentious issue. The question whether it is primarily of psychological or organic origin remains unanswered in many cases. Organic or phychogenic, each symptom by itself is of little consequence, but in combination they may be disabling enough to prevent useful employment. Furthennore, the development of the syndrome of any head injury is not easy to be predicted.Key Words: post-traumatic syndrome headache neurotic personality depression amnesia

Abstract

Breech delivery is still of importance to discuss, because perinatal morbidity and mortility are higher than those vertex deliveries. A retrospective study was carried out on 141 cases of breech deliveries in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital during 1989 - 1990. The highest perinatal mortality was due to low birth weight: 17 cases (12%) compared to all cases (4.2%). No perinatal mortality of multiparity cases was found compared with cases of nulliparity i.e. 13 cases (17.0%). The type of breech presentation were frank breech: 85 cases (60.3%); incomplete: 21 cases (14.9%) and complete: 35 cases (24.8%). The highest perinatal mortality was frank breech presentation: 15 cases (17.6%). According to the termination of delivery, breech extraction has the highest perinatal mortality (23.%).Key Words: breech presentation - parity - perinatal - morbidity - mortality

Abstract

Mosquito incense coil had been widely use among the households of Indonesian community as an effort to prevent mosquito bites. Nevertheless, its definite influence to the mosquito's biology is still not yet known. This study was conducted to ensure the influence of mosquito incense coil smoke to the longevity, egg production capability, egg hetching capacity and instar emerging capacity of Aedes aegypli mosquito in Yogyakarta.Aedes aegypli mosquitos were collected either from urban or rural area, reared in the laboratory and prepared for laboratory testing. Incense burning was done in a closed-testing room, in six different periods from 5 minutes to 180 minutes. Some biological aspects such as longevity, egg production, egg hetching and instar emerging were observed. It can be concluded that mosquito's incense smoke has either chase out effect or killing effect to Ae. aegypti mosquitos. It is also clear that with the incense burner period of 30 minutes will prolong the longevity, reduce egg production capability, reduce egg hetching capacity and reduce instar emerging capacity. On the incense burning period of 120 minutes, 81.7% of Ae. aegypti tested were killed, and furthermore, in the incense burning period of 180 minutes, all Ae. aegypti tested were killed.Key Words: egg production capability -- egg hetching capacity — instar emerging capacity chase out effect — mosquito incence coil

Abstract

Background: Cisplatin is a potent anticancer drug. In the therapy of various kinds of tumours. such as testicular, ovarian, bladder and lung cancer, cisplatin is used. It has cytotoxic and antimitotic effect on cell and tissue. Some studies reported the negative effect of cisplatin on male reproductive system. Objective: To know the effect of cisplatin on testicular tissue of male white miceMethods: Ten male white mice of DDI strain, 2 months old, 28.8-33.0 grams were classified into control group (5 mice) and treatment group (5 mice). The animal models were given standard feeding LPPOM, while those the control group were given CMC-Na 0.5% orally for 7 days. Cisplatin was given to the treatment group intravenously in the dose of 3 mg/kgBW for 7 days. At the end of the experiment, the animal model was killed by decapitation and the testicle was taken out. The testicle was placed in 10% formalin solution and processed for histology preparation with hematoxilin (Meyer) eosinand analyzed under binocular microscope. Results: All mice in the treatment group showed mild to severely damaged testis. There were serious spermatogenic and Sertoli cell disruption in severely damage testis. Conclusion: Intravenous injection of 3 mg/kgBW cisplatin for 7 days had deleterious effects on testicular tissue of male white mice, resulting in mild to severe damage.Key words: cisplatin - spermatogenesis - tubulus seminiferous - testicular damage

Abstract

Background: Pigmented gall stones in children frequently occur in spherocytosis and sickle cell anemia. The most common congenital hemolytic anemia in Indonesia is thalassemia. There is only a few studies concerning pigmented gall stones in thalassemia in the world and none in Indonesia. This study was aimed to know the prevalence of pigmented gall stones in patients with thalassemia in Pediatric Department of Dr. Sardjito Hospital.Materials and method: All patients with major thalassemia visiting Dr. Sardjito Hospital who consented to take part in the study underwent ultrasonography to identify the stone or sludge. As controls, children with no jaundice were examined.'Results. There was 8,57% gallstone in thallasemia group and none in the control group. Conclusion: The occurrence of pigment gallstone in the thalassemia syndrome children in Yogyakarta the same as in other places. The risk factors of pigment gallstone should be investigated.Key words: gall stone - prevalence - thalassemia syndrome - ultrasonography.

Abstract

Background:There is considerable evidence indicating that athletes succeeding in certains sport have distinctive body types. Different body type patterns appear between sports and within sport, according to the demands of the sport and the competitive level. Objective: To study the somatotypes and to determine the specific morphological characteristics of soccer players and volleyball players compared to undergraduate male (non-athletes) in Yogyakarta. Method: 103 soccer and 73 volleyball players, and 48 non-athletes, aged 17 to 30 were recruited in the study. Sitting height, biacromial and bicristal breadth, stature, body weight, bicondylar breadths of humerus and femur, calf and upper arm circumferences, skinfolds at triceps, subscapular, calf, and supraspinal were obtained from each subject. Heath-Carter somatotypes were determined on the subjects. A one-way ANOVA, which used LSD (least significant differences) was employed to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences among 3 group means. Results: The results showed that the mean somatotype of soccer players were balanced mesomorph (2.6 - 4.9 - 2.9), volleyball players were mesomorph ectomorph (2.4 - 3.5 - 3.7), and non-athletes male were ecto-mesomorph (2.5 - 5.2 - 3.8. The soccer players were significantly shorter, lighter, and more mesomorphic than the volleyball players. The volleyball players as a group tend to be taller and heavier than the soccer and the non-athletes.Conclusion: The findings indicated that the Yogyakarta soccer and volleyball players have similar somatotype distributions.Key words: somatotype - soccer players - volleyball players - Javanese - athletes

Abstract

Background. The living lymphatic filarial worm Brugia malayi releases physiologically protein materials in the malayan filariasis patients which is called circulating antigen. Based on the clinical symptoms and the demonstration of microfilariae in the blood smears, people who are living in the endemic area can be classified into 4 groups: symptomatic microfilaraemic, symptomatic amicrofilaraemic, asymptomatic microfilaraemic and asymptomatic amicrofilaraemic.Objectives. To detect circulating antigen in sera of each group of patients with malayan filariasis in endemic area.Methods. Circulating antigen in sera was detected by sandwich ELISA using monoclonal antibody Fesi.Result. By sandwich ELISA using monoclonal antibody Fesi, 100% of symptomatic microfilaraemic sera, 35.7% of symptomatic amicrofilaraemic sera, 89.2% of asymptomatic microfilaraemic sera and 26.3% of asymptomatic amicrofilaraemic sera were positive for circulating antigen.Conclusion. Detection of circulating antigen in sera of malayan filariasis patients could be used to support the diagnosis of malayan filariasis in some cases which were difficult to be diagnosed by conventional method based on clinical symptoms and the demonstration of microfilariae in the blood smears. Keywords: circulating antigen - sandwich ELISA - monoclonal antibody - sera - Brugia malayi - asymptomatic amicrofilaraemic.
