Abstract

Background:There is considerable evidence indicating that athletes succeeding in certains sport have distinctive body types. Different body type patterns appear between sports and within sport, according to the demands of the sport and the competitive level. Objective: To study the somatotypes and to determine the specific morphological characteristics of soccer players and volleyball players compared to undergraduate male (non-athletes) in Yogyakarta. Method: 103 soccer and 73 volleyball players, and 48 non-athletes, aged 17 to 30 were recruited in the study. Sitting height, biacromial and bicristal breadth, stature, body weight, bicondylar breadths of humerus and femur, calf and upper arm circumferences, skinfolds at triceps, subscapular, calf, and supraspinal were obtained from each subject. Heath-Carter somatotypes were determined on the subjects. A one-way ANOVA, which used LSD (least significant differences) was employed to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences among 3 group means. Results: The results showed that the mean somatotype of soccer players were balanced mesomorph (2.6 - 4.9 - 2.9), volleyball players were mesomorph ectomorph (2.4 - 3.5 - 3.7), and non-athletes male were ecto-mesomorph (2.5 - 5.2 - 3.8. The soccer players were significantly shorter, lighter, and more mesomorphic than the volleyball players. The volleyball players as a group tend to be taller and heavier than the soccer and the non-athletes.Conclusion: The findings indicated that the Yogyakarta soccer and volleyball players have similar somatotype distributions.Key words: somatotype - soccer players - volleyball players - Javanese - athletes

Abstract

A study on some anthropometry measurements of soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta had been done. The objective of the study was to investigate the differences of anthropometry measurements for different types of sport on soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 soccer players and 20 badminton players, with the age of 17 - 25 years. The t-test was used to know the differences of anthropometry measurements between soccer and badminton players. The results indicated that the average height, body weight, sitting height, biiliocristal breadth, upper arm and thigh girth of soccer players were significantly greater than those of badminton players. The biacromial breadth, calf girth, arm and total leg length between the two sport groups were not significantly different. There were somatotype differences between soccer and badminton players, and the major difference in the distribution of the two samples was that the soccer players were less endomorphic and ectomorphic than the badminton players.Further studies may explain those results with more consideration on different types of exercise performed by more samples.Key words: sport anthropology - soccer & badminton athletes - anthropometry somatotype bodymeasurements

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Body mass index and percent body fat are two parameters used to assess human body composition, which has several advantages for clinical practice, sport, growth, and normal population as well. There are many populations distributed in the wide Indonesian area that have various geographical characteristics. As evidence, plateau environments are inhabited by many populations whose physical and physiological traits are vary. This study was aimed to investigate body mass index (BMI) and predicted percent body fat (%BF) between Yogyakarta populations and Flores pygmy population in East Nusa Tenggara Province residing on a similar plateau environment. The present study was done on 105 people (51 males and 54 females) of Samigaluh Kulon Progo (Yogyakarta), 87 people (40 males and 47 females) of Gunung Kidul (Yogyakarta) and 75 pygmy people of Manggarai, Flores (East Nusa Tenggara). Height and weight were measured in all participants of this study. BMI was calculated from height and weight measurements and %BF was predicted based on BMI value using formula of Guricci et al (1998). Then, t-student test, linear regression, and chi square test were performed to analyze the data. The results indicated that Samigaluh and Gunung Kidul populations in Yogyakarta have considerably greater average of height and weight compare to Flores Pygmy population. However, differences in BMI and %BF were only significant between Flores Pygmy and Yogyakarta males population. Despite majority of both populations being under normal category, nutritional category based on BMI showed significant difference between Flores Pygmy and Yogyakarta population. In addition, more underweight individuals were also observed in Flores Pygmy. In conclusion, Yogyakarta population was considerably taller and heavier than Flores Pygmy population, however, in terms of %BF and BMI, they were nearly the same lean and body constitution. It is suggested that lower BMI and %BF represented by small body constitution and leanness in populations living on plateau in Yogyakarta and Flores are likely due to significant adaptation to their environment.
