Background: Human amniotic membrane has anti-adhesive properties and is felt to promote epithelization and decrease inflammation. Fresh human amniotic membrane transplantation has been shown to be effective in the reconstruction of the corneal surface in the setting of persistent epithelial defects, sterile corneal ulcerations, and partial limbal stem cell deficiency. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report two cases of perforated bacterial corneal ulcer and one case persistent epithelial defect treated by preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation and to determine whether preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation can be used as an alternative method for treating perforated bacterial corneal ulcer. Methods: Observed human amniotic membrane transplantation was performed on 2 eyes of 2 patients with perforated bacterial corneal ulcer and one case with persistent epithelial defect of different causes. The amniotic membrane was placed on the surface of the cornea in overlay and secured by interrupted 10.0 nylon sutures to the surrounding conjunctiva. Results: There was significant improvement of the visual acuity in case 3 with persistent epithelial defect. Despite absence of improvement of the visual acuity in cases 1 and 2, the epithelization occurred in all patients and the perforated ulcers healed. As a wound dressing, human amniotic membrane has a number of benefits: in both patients the decreased inflammatory reaction, diminishes pain and increases the ocular mobility, and may help in prediction of readiness for grafting. Conclusion: Preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation may be considered as an alternative method for treating perforated bacterial corneal ulcer which is refractory to conventional treatment.Key words: amniotic membrane transplantation - decrease inflammation - perforated corneal ulcer -persistent epithelial defect - readiness for grafting.

The Wassermann, Kahn and VDRL reactions are usually done routinely. A diagnosis based sorely on STS reaction is not recommended, although all of the three reactions are positive, moreover a diagnosis based only on one positive STS reaction is of small significant without clinical diagnosis and history of suspected syphilis. Non-specific STS is better for routine testing and for screening, as it is more sensitive while specific STS is better for solving diagnostic problems.Arti singkatan-singkatan yang dipakai :CWR = Cardiolipin Wassermann ReactionVDRL = Veneral Disease Research LaboratoryRPR = Rapid Plasma ReaginRPCF = Reiter Protein Complement FixationKRPA = Kolmer with Reiter Protein AntigenTCF = Treponema pallidum Complement • FixationT C P = Treponema pallidum Cryolysis ProteinTPA = Treponema pallidum AgglutinationTPHA = Treponema pallidurn aem-AgglutinationTPI Treponema pallidum ImmobilizationFTA Fluorescent Treponemal AntibodyABS = Absorption

Key Words : atherosclerosis - lipid - lipoprotein - apolipoprotein - coronary heart disease

The misconception of disease and health of people is influenced by belief In supernatural spirits or magic. This study was designed to contribute to our understanding of the relationship between perceived cause of illness and religious strength. A study was carried out In the Facuity of Medicine Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, among first year students. Data were analyzed using Chi square technique (Mantel Haenszel) and contingency correlation coefficient. The results of the study showed that there was no significant difference between groups of subjects who believed and did not believe in supernatural cause of mental illness according to the religious strength (X2 = 0.88; p>0.05). The results Identified some of the subjects (52.9%) believed in supernatural cause of mental illness and there was also a correlation between such beliefs and the religious strength (C.0 = - 0.13). It was concluded that there was no relationship between perceived cause of mental Illness and the religious strength.Key words : mental Illness - religious - anxiety - mysticism - believe

The article discusses the participation of women in science and technology, and more extensive ly in medicine. It reiterates the nature of science and technology, and explains why science cannot be absolutely objective. Furthermore, it stresses on the increasing speed in the advancement of science and its influence, both positive and negative, on man at different levels of the living systems. In addition, the article probes the menace of the cult of technology and the dangers of the dynamic autonomy of science, especially the application of basic sciences in war efforts, the information revolution and the new biology which would affect life itself, the dignity of man. and even his very existence. Several ways out are suggested in confronting the negative impact of science and technology, such as adopting a new paradigm, the strengthening of scientific ethics, the protection of the consumers, and the rehumanization of science and technology. Key Words: science and technology - women's studies - futuristics - thought style - scientific ethics

Background: The body flexibility of elderly people tends to decrease. One of the causes is the increased dehydration of the tissues that leads to adhesion formation. Objective: To investigate the effect of moderate intensity of low impact dance on body flexibility in untrained elderly women. Methods: Pretest and posttest control design. A total amount of thirty, healthy women, untrained, 60 - 70 years old was divided into three groups. The first group was treated by exercise three times a week, the second group two times a week and the third group was the control group. The exercise used was D series of fitness dance for elderly created by PERWOSI Yogyakarta which is a low impact aerobic dance with moderate intensity (70 - 79 % Maximal heart rate), 40 - 54 minutes/day. Three groups are treated for eight weeks. Results: The result showed that the first group revealed a significant increase in body flexibility (p<0,05) in the fourth week. The second group also revealed statistically significant increase in body flexibility (p<0,05) in the eighth week. The changes of body flexibility of the first group was higher and significant different compared to the second group. Conclusion: The low impact aerobic dance with moderate intensity, 40 - 54 minutes/day, performed three times a week in untrained elderly women increase the body flexibility earlier and higher than that of twice a week. Key words: moderate intensity low impact aerobic dance - exercise frequency - body flexibility-elderly women

Psoriasis is a chronic and recurrent inflammation skin disease characterized with hyperproliferation of keratinocytemediated by T cell lymphocytes. Climatotherapy (bathing and sunbathing) at Dead Sea is model therapy which iseffective for moderate and severe psoriasis. However there are group of psoriasis patients who are not responsiveto climatotherapy. The success of the model therapy was based on the influence of ultraviolet irradiation whichcauses depletion of lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells of the skin. Patients who are not respond toclimatotherapy shown to have higher level of mangan (Mn) and lithium (Li) serum than responsive patients. Manganand Li were suspected influenced the viability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The aim of the study isto evaluate the effect of Mn and Li levels on the viability of PBMC in the serum of psoriasis patient after exposureof narrowband UVB (NB-UVB). The PBMC were isolated from 6 psoriasis patients using Histopaque. Then the cellsisolate wasincubated in RPMI medium with 0.02 to 0.08 μmol/LMn and 0.08 to 0.1 μmol/L Li for 3 days. After thatthe cells were irradiated once with 1/3 to 2 minimal erythem dose (MED) of NB-UVB. The PBMC viability wasmeasured 3 hours after irradiation with MTT assay and read with ELISA plate reader. The results showed thatincreased levels of Mn and Li or combination did not affect on the viability of PBMC at 1/3 to 1 MED UV-UVB. Butat higher irradiation dose (2 MED), the higher level of Mn and Li had negative affect in the viability of PBMC afterirradiation. It could be concluded that the Mn and Li level in the serum did not affect the viability of PBMC afterirradiation of NB-UVB. It was suggest that other cellular component that involved in the development of psoriasislesions, such as dendritic cells, fibroblasts, macrophages, and keratinocyte, were associated with Mn and Li levels.Key words: psoriasis – mangan – lithium - peripheral blood mononuclear cell

Left bundle branch block is very rare in children. A boy, 5 years old with diphtheritic myocarditis had left bundle branch block in ECG pattern during the first days in hospital. He had received basic DPT vaccination 4 1/2 years ago, when his age was three months. The prognosis of left bundle branch block in diphtheritic myocarditis is usually poor. However, as he received DPT vaccination in the last 5 years the prognosis was tending to good. After 11 days hospitalisation, the ECG pattern suddenly reversed to normal. The follow up- through outpatient department has no further complications, despite he discharged with still high LDH serum leveLThe purpose of this study is to report a very rare case, and this case hopefully to be the last diphtheritic disease in Yogyakarta, due to a very good coverage of vaccination.Key Words: diphtheria diphtheritic myocarditis left bundle branch block DPT vaccination LDH enzyme
