Abstract

Abstract

Principally, complications of post operative cataract surgery with pseudophakos implantation cover those complications due to the operation, and those due to the existence of pseudophakos within the eye ball. In Dr. Sardjito hospital, this operation has been done since 1988. There are many kinds of complication of this operation. This retrospective study is limited to those complications in the form of anterior uveitis, endophthalmitis, secondary glaucoma, and endothelial decompensation which occurred within 1992-1994 period.A study has been performed on 405 cases, consisting of 397 cases with posterior chamber pseudophakos implantation and 8 cases with posterior chamber pseudophakos implantation. In the same period, a study on 432 cases with extra capsular cataract extraction without pseudophakos implantation was performed. The complication in the group with pseudophakos implantation were: anterior uveitis (2.96%), secondary glaucoma (1,48%), endhopthalmitis (0,99%), endothelial decompensation (0.74%) and other complications such as iris prolapse and subluxation of pseudophakos. The complication in the group without pseudophakos implantation were anterior uveitis (0.23%), endothelial decompensation (0.23%), and prolapse of iris 0.46%. In this study, the complication in the form of endophthalmitis occurred 1 week after surgery in 3 cases, and 2 weeks after surgery in one case. One case was caused by fungi infection. The complication in the form of secondary glaucoma mostly related with the occurence of post anterior uveitis surgery. The anterior uveitis in post cataract surgery with pseudophakos implantation was considered to be related with the kind of lens implanted.Key words : post operative complications -- cataract surgery -- pseudophakos implantation -- anterior uveitis -- kind bf lens implanted

Abstract

acterial resistance to antibiotics has been an important problem worldwide. Discoveries and clinical use of new antibiotics have always been followed by emergence of strains of bacterial resistant to the antibiotics in question within relatively short period of time. Various efforts have been attempted to overcome the problem, one of which being the use of two or more different antibiotics in combination. In this study the effect of rifampicin on alternation of susceptibility of S. aureus to tetracycline was evaluated. Sixty seven isolates of tetracycline resistant S. aureus determined by standard disk diffusion method of Kirby-Bauer were collected during the period from August 1997 to January 1998. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC = KHM) values of rifampicin for this isolates were determined by broth dilution method. MIC of tetracycline for each isolate was determined while the bacteria were exposed to rifampicin at sub MIC. At the same time determination of the MIC was also performed without exposing the bacteria to rifampicin and this procedure served as control. Results showed that 91% (61 of 67) rifampicin - exposed isolates have increase susceptibility to tetracycline as reflected by the decrease of MIC values. It is concluded that there is synergistic effects of tetracycline and rifampicin on S. aureus. The number of isolate with increased susceptibility to tetracycline during exposure to rifampicin was statistically significant (p < 0.05).Key Words : rifampicin - Staphylococcus aureus - susceptibility - tetracycline

Abstract

Based on guideline of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, fine needle aspiration (FNA) is believedas effective method to differentiate between benign and malignant thyroid nodule. At Dr. Sardjito Hospital,during2004 – 2008 there were 12 cases of false negative from 14 cases of thyroid malignancy. The high false negativevalue raised question about the role of FNA in determining thyroid nodule diagnosis. The purpose of this study is tofind out sensitivity and specificity of FNA in determining thyroid nodule diagnosis at Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta.Patients underwent FNA and surgery for thyroid nodule were collected between January 2004 until December2008. The result of FNAwas compared to histopathological result then sensitivity and specificity test were performedrespectively. The fine needle aspiration was conducted to 120 patients. It consist of 23 men and 97 women, mostly41 – 50 years old. The results of FNA were four of malignancy, 74 of benign, and 42 of follicular neoplasm.Histopathological result showed malignant in 23 patients and benign in 97 patients. The FNA at Dr. Sardjito Hospitalshowed 14.29%of sensitivity, 96.86%of specificity, 50%of PPV, 83.78% of NPV, 4.55 of LR +0.884 of LR-,18.92% of prevalence, and 86.49% of accuracy. The thyroid FNA at Dr. Sardjito Hospital showed low value ofsensitivity and high value of specificity. Futhermore, the thyroid FNA showed minimal role in determining thyroidnodule diagnosis. Keywords : thyroid nodule-diagnosis-fine needle aspiration-sensitivity-specificity

Abstract

Abstract

Traditional medication has been used by Indonesian people since long time ago and still continuing up to the present time. Many of them proved to be effective in curing various diseases. In this study an in vitro activity of Momordica charantia againts Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 has been evaluated by standard method of plaque reduction assay. The aim of this study is to determine whether traditional medicine we are searching has an antiviral activity. The results showed that total inhibition of plaque formation on HSV 2-infected Vero cell line was achieved at concentration of 8% v/v of crude extract, whereas the concentration of 1% v/v was capable of reducing the number of plaques by approximately 50% (inhibitory dose50= ID50). These results were very interesting as even with only small amount of crude extract we could get ID50. We expect that much lower concentration will be required to obtain ID50 if we use purified extract in the assay. Further studies are needed to elucidate other properties of the extract, including its in vivo antiviral activity, possible effect on other viruses, and mechanism of action.Key words: antiviral activity - herpes simplex virus - Momordica charantia - traditional medicine - plaque reduction assay

Abstract

This articles described various definitions of peace and peace science, and put special emphasis on operational ones which are relevant for our survival. Our main and immediate concern is the threat of a nuclear war which endangers the global ecosystem. Several reasons are brought forth why this problem has not been widely discussed in the Third World. Furthermore, the articles pointed out that old ideas on the biological necessity and unavoidability of war are obsolete and incorrect, and the assumption that nuclear arms race is just a political game to preserve peace is no longer valid. Also, the possibility of human survival after a nucleanholocallst is categorically rejected. Finally, the responsibility of the university in the preservation of peace is proposed. Key Words: peace studies - structural violence - nuclear warfare - human survival - peace-oriented education
