Abstract

The objectives of this study are to provide an account of the well-established common histological characteristic of the subfornical organ, an overview of the controversial issues regarding its structure, and to point out the histological organization which is still unclear. This histochemistry study involving the light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The albino rats which did not receive any treatment were stained with several types of staining techniques for light microscopy, i.e. hematozylin-eosin, toluidin-blue, methylene-blue, the Russells acid-phosphotungstic-hematozylin, Bodians protargol, Weils hematozylin & ferriamonium-sulphate, and the Gomoris chrome-alum-hematozylin phlozine methods. This study was carried out in the Department of Histology, Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta by using 85 albino rats of the LMR (Lembaga Makanan Rakyat, Jakarta) strain. For transmission electron microscopy 19 albino rats were used: 10 adult albino rats of the LMR strain were done in LAKFIP UGM, Yogyakarta; five adult albino rats of the Wistar strain were done in Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand; and four adult albino rats of the Wistar strain were done in First ...Key Words: subcomical organ - albino rat - neuron - neuroglia - ultra structures of blood capillaries

Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of malonaldehyde of lens in complicated cataract patients receiving instillation of diclofenac sodium 0,1% eye drop, 3 times daily, 2 weeks before undergoing surgery. Materials and methods: A cross sectional study on complicated cataract patients who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction, was conducted at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, dr. Yap Eye Hospital and mass cataract surgery in Yogyakarta and surrounding area, from November 2002 until November 2003. Subjects were consecutively recruited and classified into two groups. Twenty patients received diclofenac sodium 0,1% eye drop 3 times daily for two weeks before lens extraction, and 20 patients who received no treatment served as control. On the day of surgery, the lens was taken to measure the level of MDA at the Laboratory of Biochemistry. The difference of MDA level between the two groups was statistically analyzed by student t test. Results: The mean MDA level in the group receiving diclofenac sodium was 4,386 ± 2,625 nmol/g, while in the group without diclofenac sodium it was 6,728 ± 3,422 nmol/g. This difference was statistically significant with p = 0.020.Conclusion: The mean MDA level in diclofenac sodium group was lower than that without diclofenac sodium group.Key words: malondialdehyde level - caractogenesis - complicated cataract - diclofenac sodium.

Abstract

Phendyne-diisothiocyanate 1.4. (JONIT) or Bitoscanate in a single, doseof 150 mg was given to 34 patients infected with hookworm. Besides habit-worm, they also harboured the common species of soil-transmitted helminths, such as Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura. The result of the study .shoWed-flat the drug was effective against hookworm and less effective against A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura infections. The cure rates were 82.35%, 47.05% and 26.47 % for hookworm, A. lumbri-: coides and T. trichiura respectively. The side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea,. giddiness orheadache and abdominal discomfort were mild and transient which did not require any treatment.

Abstract

Various species of plants are known to contain different active substances showing insecticidal activities and many of them could be utilized as the alternatives of chemical insecticides with long residual actions. •These studies aimed at elucidating the insecticidal actions of leaves and seeds of Annona muricula Linn. against Aedes and Culex mosquito larvae. The leaves, seed cores and seed walls of A. muricuta were prepared as 10% infusion, and after a serial dilutions of the stock ingredient was made, they were tested for their respective insecticidal actions against the larvae of. Ae. aegypti and Cr. quinquefasciatus under laboratory conditions for 24 and 48 hours.Final results analized showed that the leaves and seed cores of A. muricula in the form of infusion were insecticidal against mosquito larvae tested.Key Words: botanical insecticides - Annona muricuta Linn. Aedes aegypti - Culex quinquefasciatus - mosquito control

Abstract

Hemorrhagic diathesis in pediatrics, covering the mechanism of hemostasis and the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects, is discussed.Hemorrhagic cases due to various causes are not uncommon in children. It is essential to understand aspects of hemorrhagic diathesis to be able to manage such cases efficiently. The diagnostic approach should be in an ordered fashion. By such a way and by understanding the principles of management, even with limited facilities, we can diagnose and treat many cases and at least recognize difficult cases and act appropriately before referring.Key Words: hemorrhagic diathesis - mechanism of hemostasis - hemophilia - purpura - hypoprothrombinemia

Abstract

Seven patients of open tibial fractures type III C were treated in the Emergency Unit, Sardjito hospital from 1990 to 1995. Three patients underwent early amputation and four patients ultimately required secondary amputation from three to twelve days after vascular repair intervention.Open tibial fractures associated with vascular trauma need an immediate decision between early amputation and limb salvage. Prospective studies are important before a well-defined protocol or objective criteria for early amputation can be considered.Key word : open fracture – tibial fracture – lower fracture – type Ill C – amputation

Abstract

This article described the medical effects of nuclear arms race and of a probable, intended, unintentional or self-ignited, nuclear war. The danger prior CO and after the explosion of the nuclear arsenal is brought forth. Among the post-war effects the global and prolonged ecological damages are elaborated, affecting both the physical-biological and cultural ecosystem. Considering these effects, post-war survival would not be preferable to immediate death. Medicine would be rendered impotent in such a nuclear holocaust; hence, all efforts have to be concentrated on prevention. Indonesia despite its geographical and political position would not be well off in a total nuclear confrontation. Even here, therefore, the physician as teacher-healer, biologist and scientist or technologist, and especially as a human being, cannot escape the social responsibility to contribute his utmost effort towards the prevention of nuclear war and its preparation. Key Words: medical effects of nuclear war - nuclear winter - human extinction - UV radiation - suppression of immune system
