Abstract

Blindness, affecting multidimensionally the lives of the individual, his family and the society, has been known according to the 1980 Indonesian Population Census to prevail for 22.1% with children and for 77.9% with adults. Based on this fact, causative factors as genetic aberrations, infectious diseases and malnutrition, drugs and radiation, birth traumas and hypertensive diseases ought to be eliminated by all possible measures, e. g. adequate obstetric care starting from the pre-conceptional period, during pregnancy, delivery and in early childhood, by a more healthy pattern of living and nutrition, and a bigger sense of responsibility on the part of both parents. It is thought to be appropriate to base laws and regulations governing social, medical and educational rehabilitation and aid programs on more Adequate medical and functional criteria to better benefit the visually handicapped. Key Words: blindness - obstetric care - genetic diseases - malnutrition - congenital disorders

Abstract

One hundred seventy four cases of 9 - 63 year old patients with chronical headache were reported. One hundred and twelve cases (64.37%) were examined by electroencephalography from April 1, 1986 to March 31, 1987, The EEG of 51 (29.31%) patients were normal, 44 (25.29%) with irritation pattern and 17 (9.77%) with hypofunction. It is suggested that the irritation pattern in chronical headache needed more attention in order to know the etiology and the location of intracranial lesion.Key Words: chronical headache - electroencephalography - irritation pattern - intracranial lesion - slow wave focus

Abstract

Objective: To report the success of amniotic membrane transplantation combined with trabekulectomy ina patient with Pseudophakic bullous keratopaty.Case Report: Amniotic membrane transplantation and trabeculectomy followed by tarsoraphy had been successfully performed in an eye of male patient 67 years old with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, with increased intraocular pressure, the visual acuity for both eyes was hand movement, intraocular pressure in the right eye was 25 mmHg and 18 mmHg in the left eye. Patient felt painful in both eyes also. Pre surgical and post surgical medication with oral and eye drop antibiotic, oral and eye drop steroid, and oral vitamin was given.Result: The painful of both eyes disappeared on the            111 day after amniotic membrane transplantation and no recurrence in 2 week observation. In the right eye amniotic membrane dissolves on the 41n day after surgery, an epithelization occurred on the 51" day after surgery. On the 7th day the visual acuity was 2/60. Amniotic membrane dissolves on the 31d day in the left eye, epithelization occurred on the 4th day. On the 71h day the visual acuity reached 3/60 and remained constant until the 2"tl week of observation. Conclusion: Amniotic membrane transplantation followed by tarsoraphy is effective for pseudophacic bullous keratopathy treatmentKey words: Pseudophacic - bullous keratopathy - amniotic membrane transplantation- trabeculectomy-intraocular pressure- visual acuity-

Abstract

Research on epidemiology, pathology, clinical course, and treatment of cancer is available. The epidemiological and clinical research on cancer must be brought into a comprehensive scheme. Basic research on oncology is suggested to be based on cancer epidemiology, and applicable for clinical practice. This article discusses the new concept of basic oncology research using breast cancer as a model. It is concluded that the new concepts in basic oncology research have to be based on the community need. It will be better if the research is multidisciplinary and multiinstitutional approach. Using this approach the expectation is that and the result could solve the problem either in the community or in the hospital.Key Words: oncology-cancer epidemiology-breast cancer oncogen-immunohistoclinical signs -prognostic index

The normal position of the eyeball in the orbit is called euophthalmos. The enlargement of tissues inside the orbit will cause protrusion of the eyeball, which is called exophthalmos. Exophthalmos is one of the symptoms of some diseases either local or systemic.Exophthalmometry is a method of measuring the position of the eyeball in the orbit. Normal value of euophthalmos is 16 mm.Exophthalmometry among the population of Yogyakarta was done and discussed in this paper.Key Words: eyeball - orbit - euophthalmos exophthalmos - exophthalmometry

Abstract

We reported a case of lupus nephritis in a 9-year-old patient with beta-thalassemia trait who was treated in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. The patient presented with bicytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy. Laboratory results revealed hematologic disorder, i.e. hemolytic anemia with positive Coombs test and thrombocytopenia, positive ANA and antibody to double-stranded DNA, and proteinuria of 1230 mg/24 hrs, which fulfilled 4 criteria of ACR for the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus ISLE). Signs of pericarditis was not found. In the follow up, the patient showed microcytic hypochromic anemia with high transferrin saturation level, leading to hemoglobin analysis which revealed beta thalassemia trait. This case is interesting because this patient didnt present with characteristic clinical features, and because SLE is seldom diagnosed before 16 years of age. Moreover, this patient also suffered from beta thalassemia trait, which is known to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis, another autoimmune disorder.Key words: SLE, lupus nephritis, beta thalassemia trait, childhood age
