Abstract

The effect of renal artery occlusion on the blood concentrations of sodium, potassium and calcium as well as on the amount of red blood cells, blood platelets and hematocrite were studied in dogs. Twenty dogs, both sexes, were used in this experiment. The dogs were anesthetized with ketalar and chloralose. The systemic blood pressure was continously monitored during the experiment. The experiment was done under normal systemic blood, left renal artery occlusion,, and on both renal arteries occlusion. The dogs were divided into four groups according to both sexes and body weight. The results showed that during the occlusion of renal artery the blood pressure increased (6.27 - 18.28%). The increase of systemic blood pressure was followed by the increase of the amount of red blood cells, blood platelets and hematocrite. The serum electrolytes concentration of sodium of both increased or decreased. The concentration of potasium and calcium decreased and increased respectively. The concentrations of sodium, potassium and calcium in the urine decreased during the occlusion of the renal artery.Key Words: renal artery occlusion - erythrocytes - blood platelets - urine electrocytes - blood electrolytes

Abstract

Studies on the spectrum of insecticidal activities of any entomopathogens indigenously obtained from any mosquito larval habitats should be accomplished to realize its recpective degree of potency and specificity as a biological control agent. These studies aimed at testing of comparative toxicides of four bacilli isolates: B. sphaericus I (23A), B. sphaericus11 (51C), B. pumilus (25C) and B. cereus (142A) against Cul= quingu.efasciatus, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles aconitus larvae in laboratory conditions.Pathogenicity and toxicity testings were undertaken after the four bacilli isolates and their controls (B. thuringiensis H-14 and B. sphaericus 1593) being cultured in slant media or produced through fermentations with a defined medium (Prof Sam Singer) as final whole cultures (FWCs) and primary powders. Titrations of all primary powders produced were carried out against standard powders of B. t. H-14 (IPS 82) and B. sphaericus 1593 (RB 80).The results of the testings showed that:1. the four bacilli isolates were respectively pathogenic for Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. aconitus larvae;2. the degree of sensitivities of the three species of mosquito larvae against the four bacilli isolates from higher to lower levels were Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. am-nibs;3. toxicides of the four bacilli isolates were still much lower than that of either B. t. H-14 or B. sphaericus 1593, and4. results of the attempts of primary powder production with a Sam Singers medium for the four isolates, B. I. H-14 and B. sphaericus 1593 were considered satisfactory.Key Words: entomopathogens - bacilli isolates - B. thuringiensisH-14 - B. sphaericus 1593 - biological

Abstract

I have presented the use of soft lenses which has a wider range when compared with that of the usual spectacles. There are some complications but we can prevent them by supervising their use.The result of the use of soft lens during three :.ears was presented. No serious complications were met. The soft lens is relatively expensive because the material is imported. Patients desiring contact lenses must exactly know the problems.Key Words: soft lens - contact lens - refraction anomaly - aphakia - erosio corneae

Abstract

This study was aimed at determining the effect of dilution of active ingredients of chemical sunscreen consisting of octyl-methoxy cinnamate and benzophenon-3 on its potency, in terms of SPF (sun-protection factor) and APF (UV-A protection factor).Factors of sun & UV-A protection factor had been tested in the Laboratory of Photobiology, Department of Dermato-Venereology Dr. Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta, involving 45 people who were voluntarily participating in the study of sun-protection Factor and 22 people in the study of UV-A protection factor. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between APF of the chemical sunscreen and dilution of the active ingredients, but unseen for SPF. No differences in the potency of cream and lotion sunscreens. Based on this study, it is recommended that all concentration of these sunscreens can be used by Indonesians.Key words : cinnamate - benzophenon - sunscreen - sun protection factor - UV-A protection factor

Abstract

Genetic diseases are divided into genic diseases, chromosomic diseases and embryopa shies. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in each human somatic cell. According to their shape and the location of their centromer, chromosomes are classified into 8 groups, namely group A, B, C, D. E. F and G. Chromosomic diseases are caused by either numerical or structural derangements of chromosomes. Chromosomic diseases cause metabolic disorders during conception until post-natal period. The degree of physical as well as mental disorders depend on the degree of lack or surplus of chromosomic materials. Chromosomic diseases may be lethal. i. e. they can cause spontaneous abortion as well as fetal and neonatal death. Some chromosomic diseases and their IQ scores will be presented here. Special attention will be given to trisomy 13, trisomy 18. trisomy 21, XXX syndrome and XYY syndrome. Key Words : mental defect - chromosomic disease - chromosome classification - IQ score - embryopathies -

Abstract

Background: Secular changes observed in human development are very sensitive bioindicators of social stresses, social and economic changes, as well as pollution and transformation of the natural environment. Environmental factors, such as nutritional habits, lifestyle and infectious diseases appear to be the main causes of differences in growth and maturation between ethnic and social groups. Objectives: This study was undertaken to know the secular changes in body size and menarche age of Javanese adolescent in Yogyakarta. Methods:The sample consisted of 562 Yogyakarta adolescent (300 girls and 262 boys), ranging from 11 to 18 years of age, measured in August - September 2005. For comparison, data on body size and menarche age of Yogyakarta adolescent examined in 1982 by Aswin et al were used. Measurements of stature and height, and menarche age were obtained for two samples of the Yogyakarta adolescent. Means and standard deviation were calculated for each measurement and for menarche age. Results: The results for stature, weight and menarche age of adolescent measured in 2005 wee greater compared with other Javanese Yogyakarta samples adolescent 23.years ago. Significant positive trends instature, weight and menarche age were apparent between the two samples: 7.37 cm (5.1                        %),  9.21   kg(26.1   %) and 16.6 months (10.6 %), respectively. Conclusions: In summary, the results show a positive secular trend in body dimensions (height and weight) and menarche age, and this can be related to improvement in living conditions in Yogyakarta, especially during the last 23 years. Key words: secular change - anthropometric - menarche age - adolescent

Abstract

Key words: Plasmodium vinckei petteri -- malaria -- LACA mice -- mononuclear phagocyte -- cellular immunity

Abstract

More than 40 years ago T. Duckett Jones published a set of guidelines for the diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever that became known as the Jones criteria. The criteria became widely used throughout the world and provided a uniform diagnostic reference for national and international epidemiologic, prevention and treatment studies.Although the basic concepts proposed by Jones have been retained, modifications of the original criteria should be done to simplify the criteria in order to be used as a diagnostic tool at the primary health care, type D and C hospitals and for surveillance. These new simple diagnostic instruments should have good sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values using Jones criteria as gold standard.Eight criteria have been considered as a new simple diagnostic instrument, with various sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive and negative predictive values. The optimum result of this diagnostic test is in the eight criteria, i. e. the criteria of specific murmur.Key Words: rheumatic fever -- cardiomegaly -- heart failure -- Jones criteria -- specific murmur
