Abstract

There are differences in background between cancer and other diseases, among others the difference in sex incidence, behaviour, cellular changes, and clinical aspects. Therefore, research on cancer is suggested to be based on cancer epidemiology, basic research, and clinical research. This article discusses the basic principles of cancer research from the point of view of epidemiological and clinical concepts. It is concluded that research in cancer epidemiology must be based on the well-developed cancer registry. The epidemiological and clinical research of cancer must be brought into a comprehensive scheme. It will be useful if basic research is correlated with research in cancer epidemiology. Clinical research must be based on epidemiological and basic research.Key Words: cancer research - cancer registry - cancer epidemiology - oncology - clinical trials

Abstract

Cows milk has been recognised as an almost ideal food because it serves as a source of complete nutrients. Unfortunately, there are some people who cannot drink milk (milk intolerance) because lack of lactase.. High frequency of milk intolerance is found in developing or tropical countries and non-Caucasian race. It is a problem for public nutrition in those countries. Lactase is an inducible enzyme. The inductor is lactose, a major carbohydrate in milk. Some studies suggested that milk intolerance was influenced by genetic factors, diet and milk drinking habit. Efforts to overcome milk intolerance by providing low lactose milk had been done, but the result was not yet successful.Key words: protein calori malnutrition - cows milk - lactase deficiency - milk intolerance

Abstract

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) is caused by dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes aegypei and A e. albopictus mosquitoes. The absence of causative drugs and protective vaccines, therefore, indicates vector control measures as the only alternative for the disease abatement. Various methods of dengue vector control and of developing and promoting community participation in such activities are discussed. Key Words: dengue haemorrhagic fever — Aedes aegypti — Breteau Index — environmental sanitation — Rural Improvement Programme

Abstract

It is now clear that diabetes mellitus is not a disease in classical sense but is a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders which share glucose intolerance in common. Genetic heterogeneity, the concept that diabetes can have many different causes, was first suggested by the existence of rare genetic syndromes with diabetes, ethnic differences of clinical features, and genetic heterogeneity in animal models. This paper describes the background for genetic heterogeneity of diabetes mellitus which has major implications for the research and care of diabetic patients since the precise etiology, risk of complications and genetic counselling are likely to vary among these different disorder that result in diabetes.Key Words: diabetes mellitus - genetic heterogeneity - mode of inheritance - genetic counselling - antoinunune process

Abstract

Diagnosis sebagian besar limtoma gastrointestinal hanya dapat ditegakkan dengan laparotomi. Duapuluh empat penderita limtoma gastrointestinal primer diteliti. Key Words : gastrointestinal lymphoma - laparotomy - chemotherapy - working formulation.

Abstract

Among complications affecting the pregnant woman, anemia is more frequently encountered than is usually realized, consequently becoming not infrequently overlooked in diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.Preexistent conditions as low socio-economic status, under or malnutrition, multiparity with short intervals, chronic occult bleeding or evident hemorrhages associated with previous deliveries or menstruation, are, with inadequate antenatal care, the most pertinent factors to deal with in terms of prevention and treatment. Since 95% of pregnancy anemias are iron deficiency anemias because of basically avoidable conditions, this specific iron deficiency problem deserves the most serious attention. Although of no marked consequence when of mild gradation, in moderate and severe cases all anemias of pregnancy — irrespective of etiology — tend to exert deleterious effects on the reproductive process, directly or indirectly.Key Words: anemia in pregnancy iron deficiency nutrition - pregnancy spacing -hematologic index

Abstract

Fibrocystic change is a benign breast lesion commonly found in women. In the past this lesion was regarded as having a high potential malignancy. By using Pages classification, Dupont and Page histologically proof that most of fibrocystic lesions (69,7%) have equal risk for malignancy with normal women population. Only 4% of the benign breast lesion have high risk to become breast carcinoma. The study of Dupont and Page has changed the terminology and point of view regarding malignant potency of the fibrocystic lesion of the breast. In the future pathologists are recommended to apply Pages classification in order to treat the patient with fibrocystic lesion more properly.Key words: fibrocystic change-carcinoma in situ of the breast-Pages classification-a typical hyperplasia-breast cancer
