Abstract

The paper presented a case of hypothyroidism in patient with Graves disease after have long been treated with antithyroid agent. The cause of hypothyroidism in this case might be (1) the effect of anti-thyroid agent, (2) natural history of Graves disease as a result of autoimmune mechanism, and (3) coincidental presentation of Graves disease and condition causes hypothyroidism (hashitoxicosis).A 39 year old woman, household , admitted to Sardjito Hospital because of general fatigue and facial edema. She was previously treated as Graves disease with PTU (propylthiouracil) 100 mg 3 times 100 mg/day for 2 years. Because of allergic reaction against PTU, the drug was replaced by Neomercazol®. One year later the patient complaining body weight (BW) gain, with the laboratory investigation showed T3 = 0.78 µg/d1 (N: 0.6-1.9); T4 = 2436 µg/d1 (N: 45-100). Six months before admission she has not taken any drugs. On admission, BW 60 kg, other vital signs were in normal limits, palpebral edema, T3 = 0.3 itg/d1; Ta = 2.0 jig/d1; Total cholesterol 329 mg/dl; LDL-cholesterol 238 mg/dl; triglycerides 298 mg/d1; Anti-thyroglobulin 1/1280 (N: negative); anti-microsomal negative; other laboratory results revealed normal values. She was diagnosed as hypothyroidism post treatment of Graves disease. She was treated with Thyrax® 1 tablet daily, and one year later she was in a normal condition. All patients with Graves disease should be followed up regularly eventhough the clinical condition already subsided, since other autoimmune disease may coincidentally present.Key Words: hypothyroidism Graves disease hashitoxicosis antithyroid agents autoimmune disease

Abstract

Success of filariasis control still depends greatly on chemotherapy. piethylcarbamazine is so far considered as the most suitable and effective drug of filariasis in man. Its untoward reactions experienced by the treated individuals, long course of administration and incapability of removing all Wuchereria bancroftimicrofilariae in blood, however, initiate the search for more ideal antifilarials.A number of chemical compounds has been tested and shown to be active as filaricides in. experimental animals, and needs further intensive and careful clinical evaluation in man prior to its administration on a wider scale.Various methods of filaricide testing, using different filarial parasites and laboratory animals, and hindering factors arising in case of the production of a new antifflarial drug are discussed.Key Words: filariasis chemotherapy - diethylcarbamazine filaricides - filaricide testing - an tifilarial drug

Abstract

Background: Antifungal agents are routinely used for the treatment of fungal infections. It is very likely however, that resistance of fungi to antifungal agents will emerge in the near future and the development new antifungal agent is very slow. To cope with the problem, it is important to search new antifungal agent from natural resources for yhe treatment of various diseases. It was also reported that bee honey has antibacterial property. Objective: To know the in vitro and in vivo effect of crude honey, aether-extracted honey and its residual part on Candida albicansMethods: Samples used in this experiment were crude honey, aether-extracted honey and residual part of extracted honey. Each sample was tested for its anticandidal activity with macrobroth dilution method using casein-yeast extract-glucose medium. Minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal fungicidal concentration were determined for each sample.Result: The result showed that extracted honey anticandidal effect in vitro at minimal inhibitory concentration was 0.3125% v/v and its residual was 25%, whereas crude honey has no inhibitory in vitro effect on Candida albicans. Minimal fungicidal concentration of extracted honey and its residual were 0.31255 and 50% v/v respectively. In vivo study showed that treatment group recovered faster than control group. Conclusion: Aether extracted honey and its residual have anticandidal activity in vitro. The extract have effect on recovery of candidal infected mice.Key words: Candida albicans - bee honey - antifungal-minimal inhibitory concentration - candidal infection recovery

Abstract

Gravesdisease is the second common endocrine disease found in the clinic, characterized by hyperthyroidism, ophthalmopathy, diffuse struma with/without dermopathy.CoMmon treatments for hyperthyroidism of Graves disease are anti thyroid drugs, subtotal thyroidectomyorradioiodine (ml). However, reports in the medical literature present widely varying and often conflicting with regard to cure, relapse, frequency aside effects, cost, and compliance. No single form of therapy is acceptable to or suitable for all patients. The choice of treatment should be based upon several factors, such as the age of the patients, the size of the thyroid gland, existence of complications, and other factors.Key Words: Graves disease - hyperthyroidism - antithyroid drugs - thyroidectomy - radioiodine

Abstract

Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), which is drug of choice for rheumatoid arthritis. It is commercially available as enteric coated tablet and emulgel for topical dosage form.Topical drug was prepared and developed for systemic purposes in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, to reduce the risk of adverse drug reaction given orally. As an oral antirheumatoid drug, it caused dizziness and irritation on gastric mucosa. The study was carried out to assess the effect of semisolid formulation variation on its percutaneous absorption. The experiment was performed by preparing 4 formulas of ointment i.e. hydrocarbon base, washable base, 0/W emulsion base, W/O emulsion base and commercial cream E as a control drug. All of the formulas and standard cream were tested in vitro for the rate of dissolution and its percutaneous absorption on rabbits. The Dissolution Efficiency (DE) of washable emulsion, 0/W emulsion base,- and the commercial cream was correlated with their Ka from the experiment of percutaneous absorption. Among the three formulas, the C ointment (0/W emulsion base) showed the best correlation. The order of the correlation declined as follows C, B and E. From the result it can be concluded that the change of formulation could affect the dissolution and in turn could affect the absorption of the active compounds.Key words : ointment - cream - diclofenac - in vitro - in vivo

Abstract

The article discusses the participation of women in science and technology, and more extensive ly in medicine. It reiterates the nature of science and technology, and explains why science cannot be absolutely objective. Furthermore, it stresses on the increasing speed in the advancement of science and its influence, both positive and negative, on man at different levels of the living systems. In addition, the article probes the menace of the cult of technology and the dangers of the dynamic autonomy of science, especially the application of basic sciences in war efforts, the information revolution and the new biology which would affect life itself, the dignity of man. and even his very existence. Several ways out are suggested in confronting the negative impact of science and technology, such as adopting a new paradigm, the strengthening of scientific ethics, the protection of the consumers, and the rehumanization of science and technology. Key Words: science and technology - womens studies - futuristics - thought style - scientific ethics
