Abstract

Abstract

Previous study has shown that -terpineol has a cytotoxic effect on NCI-H69 cancer cell line. This study aimed to evaluate cytotoxicity, proapoptotic, and antiproliferative activities of -terpineol in T47D cell lines. The cytotoxic activity of -terpineol was determined using MTT cellviability assay, while apoptosis was tested by the acridine orange-ethidium bromide stainingmethod. The cell cycle was evaluated by flowcytometry method. The results showed that -terpineol had cytotoxic effect on the T47D cells with the IC50 value of 135.00 ± 8.74 M.Furthermore, -terpineol induced the cells apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Flowcytometryanalysis showed that -terpineol induced the T47D cell distribution in Go/G1 phase, howeverinhibited cell distribution in S phase. This study suggests that -terpineol has a potential anticanceractivity.

Abstract

18 cow hearts have been studied to demonstrate the existence of communications between lymph vessels and veins on the superficial surface of the heart. The findings showed that in 9 cases such communications could be demonstrated, being 1 or 2 in number on each heart. Most of them were located on the sternocostal surface, especially near the apex. The diameters of the lymph vessels near the communications were found to be 80 to 480 microns. These anastomosis were assumed to play a role in certain conditions such as in lymphatic or venous stasis.

Abstract

Blood transfusion is principally a process of transferring blood or blood components from one individual (the donor) toanother individual (the recipient). Blood transfusion can be either a life saving condition or a life threatening situation dueto the complications happened. Therefore, blood transfusion should be conducted with clear and accurate indication inorder to obtain a condition in which the advantages outweighs the disadvantages. The aim of this study was to evaluatethe differences of the blood transfusion reactions between the patients underwent the emergency surgery with theelective surgery. This was a cross sectional study using data from the medical records from January to December 2009and from the observation on blood transfusion patients from January to May 2010. Data were analyzed using independentt-test, Chi-square test or the logistic regression, with 95% confidence interval (p<0.05). Two hundred and sixty eightdata from medical records and directly observation on blood transfusion patients were obtained during the study. Thewere significant differences of patient reactions after blood transfusion on both types of operation and blood componentstransferred (p<0.05).The transfusion reactions were more frequent in emergency surgery (54.9%) compared withelective surgery (30.5%). Based on types of blood component transfered, the transfusion reaction was more frequentafter Whole Blood/WB transfusion (84.9%) compared with Packed Red Cell/PRC transfusion (25.1%) and Fresh FrozenPlasma/FFP transfusion (25%). The types of operation and blood products had been proven to be the risk factors in bloodtransfusion. Moreover the blood products contributed more in the transfusion reactions compared with the types ofoperation (p<0.05). Amount of transfused blood based on haemoglobin correction formula on both the emergency orelective operations was not significantly different (p>0.05). In conclusion, blood transfusion reactions happened morefrequently in emergency surgery than elective surgery. The WB also generated transfusion reaction more frequently thanthe PRC. The amount of blood required based on hemoglobin correction formula for most patients was similar to the bloodtransfused.Key words: blood transfusion-type of operation-transfusion reaction - whole blood-haemoboglobin correction formula

Abstract

Cystoid macular edema after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens is considered to be the most frequent and troublesome complication. The advantage of topical indomethacin had been previously proven, but the influence of oral administration had not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to Investigate the effect of the using of indomethacin on the incidence of cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery with an intraocular lens implantation. Two groups of patients with matured and immatured senile cataract undergone extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of an intra ocular lens had been reported. Each group consisted of 40 patients. Indomethacin group received 25 mg indomethacin orally 2 hours preoperativelly, as well as at 2, 6, and 10 hours postoperativelly then continued for 5 days postoperativelly. Ocular examinations were performed on postoperative days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 60, and 90. No Incidence of cystoid macular edema in group indomethacin was found and in placebo group was 2,5% (x2 = 0,001; p> 0,05). After seven days observation on the effect of indomethacin to the postoperative inflammatory reaction demonstrated that there was insignificantly difference between indomethacin and placebo group (x2 = 2,15; p >0,05). Observation on the therapeutic side effect phenomenon indicated that Indomethacin was relativelly safe even if used in the aged patients.Key Words : oral indomethacin - cystoid macular edema - cataract operation - intra-ocular lens -inflammatory reaction

Abstract

Blindness, affecting multidimensionally the lives of the individual, his family and the society, has been known according to the 1980 Indonesian Population Census to prevail for 22.1% with children and for 77.9% with adults. Based on this fact, causative factors as genetic aberrations, infectious diseases and malnutrition, drugs and radiation, birth traumas and hypertensive diseases ought to be eliminated by all possible measures, e. g. adequate obstetric care starting from the pre-conceptional period, during pregnancy, delivery and in early childhood, by a more healthy pattern of living and nutrition, and a bigger sense of responsibility on the part of both parents. It is thought to be appropriate to base laws and regulations governing social, medical and educational rehabilitation and aid programs on more Adequate medical and functional criteria to better benefit the visually handicapped. Key Words: blindness - obstetric care - genetic diseases - malnutrition - congenital disorders

Abstract

There is a tendency of primary liver cancer between 1970-1973 corresponding to the introduction of liver biopsy in Yogyakarta. Liver cancer had previously been found to be the most frequent tumour in necropsy material in Java. In the series, composed of biopsies only, it accounted for 36.8% of all abdominal cancers biopsied in Yogyakarta in 1973 and is thus more frequent than indicated by the total material covering a 4-year period (1970-1973).Based on the data of the Department of Pathology and population in 1976 by utilizing the formulathe primary liver cancer incidence in 1974 through 1978 is provided. It seems that the minimum incidence of primary liver cancer in Yogyakarta is lower than the incidence in other countries in Asia and AfricaKey Words: liver cancer - cancer registration -incidence of hepatoma - racial predisposition for cancer - viral hepatitis

Abstract

Background: Children and infant immunization are often viewed as the symbol of preventive medicine and health service. Furthermore, immunization coverage is often used as an indicator of health service achievement. Recognizing the determinants associated with infant and children immunization status is one of the efforts to increase immunization coverage. Objectives: To know the immunization coverage in Yogyakarta province and determinants associated with coverage and age on immunization.Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study on children 12-23 months of age living in Yogyakarta municipality and other four districts in Yogyakarta province. Subjects were selected using proportional probability multistage cluster random sampling from 30 clusters each representing rural and municipality as urban area. Results: The coverage in municipality as well as in urban areas exceed 90%. The coverge is too high to allow analysis on unimmunized children. We found no statistically significant difference of coverage between rural educational level and though there was a significant difference in parental educational level and occupation distance to nearest health center and age on immunization (p>0.05). There is a statistically significant difference between age on BCG and hepatitis B immunization with place of immunization (p<0.05).Conclusion: Immunization coverage in Yogyakarta province based on survey exceeded 90%. Determinant associated with age on immunization was place of immunization.Key words: immunization coverage - determinant - age on immunization.
