Abstract

Salmonella typhi infection is commonly treated by an antimicrobial agent such as levofloxacin. At the moment, herbal usage has risen as an alternative therapy. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L) is a commonly used herb which contains flavonoid as its major active compound. Aqueous extract of pomegranate peel had been known for its antimicrobial effect to S. typhi on in vitro study. The aim of this research was to investigate the activity of aqueous extract of pomegranate peel to S. typhimurium in vivo and find the antimicrobial effect of different concentrations. The study was conducted by using typhoid fever model in mice infected by S. typhimurium. Each mice was treated with aqueous pomegranate peel extract in three consentrations: 0,65 mg/ml, 1,3 mg/ml and 2,6 mg/ml for treatment groups and levofloxacin 1,3 mg/ml for positive control group. Ileum of each mice was isolated and cultured. The result of post hoc LSD test showed that negative control group significantly different with treatment group and the result of Pearson test showed p=0,000 and r = -0,865. In conclusion, aqueous extract of pomegranate peel had an antimicrobial activity on S. typhimurium in vivo where the higher extract concentration the lesser number of S. typhimurium colony.   Keywords: Antimicrobial, Pomegranate, Salmonella typhimurium

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease can be treated with synthetic or traditional antithrombotic drugs (herbal). Synthetic antithrombotic drugs have a lot of side effects, so as an alternative antithrombotic is used traditional drugs, star gosseberry. Star gosseberry have many active compounds which are suspected to inhibit platelet aggregation. Objective: to know the effect of star gosseberry on bleeding time of male Wistar rats as an alternative antithrombotic drugs. Methods of research: this study was experimental laboratory research with post-test only control group design. The research samples were 24 male wistar rats and divided into 4 groups: negative control (distilled water), positive control (aspirin 5,85 mg dose), treatment 1 (star gosseberry 4,5 mg/g dose), and treatment 2 (star gosseberry 2.25 mg/g dose). The treatment was given for 8 days then the tail of samples were cut by 0.5 cm from the tip of the tail. Every 30 seconds the blood that dripped out was absorbed on absorbent papers until the bleeding stops. Bleeding time was measured from initial point of bleeding until the cessation of the bleeding point. Result: star gosseberry dose 4,5 mg/g had the same effect as aspirin that was prolonged bleeding time. Conclusion: star gosseberry could be prolonged bleeding time so it can be used as an alternative antithrombotic drugs. Keywords: Katuk leaf, bleeding time, antithrombotic, platelet

Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis has become one of the most important pathogenic bacteria that lead to nosocomial infection. This is caused by its ability to form a biofilm on the surface. Essential oils are one of the natural product that could be used as antiinfection agents. Bengle rhizome essential oil has been known to have activity against non-pathogenic bacteria S. epidermidis. This study was proposed to know the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of bengle rhizome essential oil against clinical isolate of S. epidermidis at concentrations of 45, 60, 75, and 90%. Antibacterial activity was determined by the diffusion method with hole plate technique, while antibiofilm activity was determined by the microtiter assay method with crystal violet staining and quantified by measuring the optical density (OD) at λ 595 nm. This study showed that bengle rhizome essential oil has antibacterial and antibiofilm activity. The largest antibacterial and antibiofilm activity was shown from 90% concentration of bengle rhizome essential oil. Keywords: nosocomial infections, antibacterial, antibiofilm, bengle essential oil, Staphylococcus epidermidis.
