Abstract

Literary works can be said as the representation of human life. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is the novella that brings the issues about agricultural worker, especially ranch worker. Most of the characters in Of Mice and Men are men. It shows strong sense of masculinity of ranch workers at that time that John Steinbeck tried to show as the response of the social condition in America especially in ranch worker society. The purpose of this research is to understand John Steinbeck’s world view on masculinity of the male characters in Of Mice and Men by analyzing the America’s condition in Of Mice and Men and America’s condition around 1937. The analyzing process uses Lucien Goldman’s genetic structuralism to find the author’s world view. The research uses qualitative data that that is categorized into two kinds. There are primary data and secondary data. Primary data are taken from the novella Of Mice and Men and the secondary data are taken from thesis, books, and internet material related with John Steinbeck historical background, genetic structuralism, some previous researches and masculinity. The result of this research shows that John Steinbeck as the author of Of Mice and Men has the same tendency with worker class point of view in seeing a phenomenon related with the transition of masculinity in mid-nineteenth until early twentieth. It is showed by worker-class masculinity’s traits found in the male characters in Of Mice and Men. There are physical power, using outfit that is related with jeans and denim and using verbal abuse in daily communication. Abstract

Abstract This research discusses about bias and power in the four chosen news articles published by the Jakarta Post. Those four articles discuss the competition between two bickering factions inside Golkar Party, Bakrie’s group and Laksono’s group, to grab the position of new house speaker in early 2016. The main goal of this research is to reveal the power and bias applied implicitly through the linguistic features enacted in media. The revelation of bias is analyzed through its linguistic choice by using Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005). Since bias is one of the social inequalities phenomena, this research is revealed under Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) scope, especially using Firclough’s three dimensional frameworks, which deals with analyzing the relation between language and social context. The Jakarta Post needs to obey the principles of journalist that are being neutral, independent and objective in informing the news. However, the result of this research shows that the media is possible to do bias because of political interest.

Abstract

AbstrakSurat kabar Trompet Masjarakat memiliki peranan penting dalam sejarah perkembangan pers di Indonesia. Istilah “kaum kecil” yang selalu digunakan dalam tajuk berita menjadikannya sangat menarik untuk dibahas lebih mendalam. Penelitian ini bertujuan memahami kebijakan pemerintahan Soekarno pada surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat Tahun 1947-1965 dengan menggunakan pendekatan Sosiologi Politik. Rumusan penelitian ini sebagai berikut: (1) Bagaimana sejarah kelahiran surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat di Surabaya? (2) Bagaimana kebijakan Soekarno di dalam surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat? (3) Bagaimana dampak pemberedelan surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat pada tahun 1965 terhadap redaksi? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah dengan tahapan sebagai berikut: pemilihan topik, pengumpulan sumber (heuristik), kritik, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa surat kabar Terompet membawa suara kaum “Republikein” untuk mempertahankan kemerdekaan Indonesia. Setiap penerbitan mengandung kebijakan Soekarno yang diletakkan pada halaman pertama. Redaksi juga memperlihatkan kebijakan dari Soekarno secara serial dan selalu mendukung untuk melawan pihak yang tidak mendukungnya. Surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat dilarang terbit pasca-Tragedi G30S 1965. Redaksi surat kabar Trompet Masjarakat ditangkap dengan tuduhan ikut serta mendukung Tragedi G30S 1965.
