Abstract

This article dicusses the gender struggle of Shauzia in Mud City by Ellis. The struggle implies the gender condition and critical point of view of the author based on the theory of representation and gender oppression. The representation theory based on Stuart Hall helps to uncover the dominating cultural codes which oppress Shauzia as a person while the gender theory contributes to analyze the layer of dominationin the level of individual, interactional and institutional. This study results in several findings as:the cultural codes represented in the novel are giving benefit the man by the power of military and powerful patriarchy where Shauzia finds hard to go out from camp and work as woman. Furthermore, gender theory plays on scrutinizing the idea as individual woman lacks of rights, and influence her interactional competence as well to stay inside the compound. The institutional system determines her exixtence only to accept what the compound has given to her and not more. Thus she is rejected when she wants to go to France. Ellis poses her self to tell the reader that the value of women in Afganistan at war is unworthy compare to what happens in Europe.

Abstract

This article deals with the representation of critical nationalism discourse in Banyuwangian music in the New Order era. By juxtaposing representation and hegemony theory which emphasizes textual-contextual reading, we will analyze the constructions of local metaphors we assume supporting the establishment of nationalism. Such constructions intertwined with the mobilization of the uniqueness of local cultures that contributed to establishing the national culture through which nationalism got its “nutrition”. However, some songwriters constructed critical nationalism by representing unique metaphors related to the characteristics of subaltern subjects that in the midst of their problems songwriters still have, in their silence, critical view toward the ruling faction, without negating their responsibility to guard the nation. The representation of critical nationalism using local metaphors is a critique of the social and economic problems caused by the injustice of development programs as well as a creative strategy to negotiate Using cultures in the midst of modernity.

Abstract

All literary creations are engaged with ideology because a literary creator always comes with an ideology. This research aims to identify the shift of ideology of patriarchy in the Cinderella fairy tale by Charles Perrault into feminism in the movie by Kay Cannon. The research method utilized is descriptive qualitative, and the data consists of narrative text from the fairy tale and visual scenes from the movie adaptation. The data is then compared and analyzed using Barthes' semiotics theory. In addition, through the shift of the ideologies, the motives of the adaptation are uncovered based on Hutcheon's theory of adaptation. The novelty of this research lies in the theory of adaptation utilized in the study. The findings show the ideology portrayed in the fairy tale is patriarchy, which is displayed in the characterization of Cinderella's subservience and the plot's resolution, which emphasizes male primogeniture. Conversely, the movie adaptation shows liberal feminism depicted by Cinderella and Gwen, the original characters of the movie, portraying their respective endeavor to achieve equality in economic and political spheres. The movie's resolution depicts liberal feminist ideals, in which the king acknowledges and appoints Gwen to rule the kingdom. The motives concluded from the ideologies include cultural capital and personal and political motives. The cultural capital motive highlights the value of adaptation work that utilizes patriarchy and feminism as cultural phenomena ingrained in society. The second motive, personal and political, emphasizes the adaptor, Kay Cannon's agenda on female empowerment, represented by Cinderella and Gwen.

Abstract

The opposition between community members that gave rise to the conflict was recorded in the Babad Blambangan (BB), an East Javanese manuscript from the 19th century. The text narrated the causes of the succession of the kings in Blambangan and the conflict situations that accompanied the change of power for every king in Blambangan, from Prabu Tawangalun until Raden Tumenggung Pringgakusuma. The conflicts that are represented indicate the existence of ideas in the minds of the people of East Java about building and maintaining social relations between communities. In this regard, this research aims to understand the perspective of the East Java society towards the phenomenon of conflict in social relations as represented in BB. To find this perspective, qualitative methods were used. This research was also carried out using a multidisciplinary approach through language analysis and socio-cultural conflict approaches. With this approach, various phenomena are classified, identified, analyzed, and interpreted. Theories used to understand the conflict phenomenon are semantics preference and conflict situations. The results of this research show that the conflict in the BB is dominated by issues of power and retaliation. This results reflects the community's perspective on social relations in eastern Java at that time, namely that the existence of personal ambition for power was something that needed to be controlled. If this desire is left uncontrolled, it can damage social relations in society. The findings also strengthen and add to the ideas of previous research regarding the concept of harmony in Javanese society, especially in eastern Javanese society.
