Abstract

Since Muslimah fashion has risen in the world, many companies are showing Muslim women who wear veiling their advertisements, including American brands advertisements. They are Nike, American Eagle, Covergirl, Fenty Beauty, and Gap. This case is important to be discussed, because it is completely opposite. America is well-known as Islamophobia country and hijab-Muslim woman as an identity of Islam religion. Therefore, the study aims to reveal the meaning of the Muslimah model in these advertisements. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method and applies Roland Barthes semiotic theory and religification of commodities theory. This research found the meanings of Muslimah models refer to the current phenomena of Muslimah life such as the modern beauty and lifestyle of Muslimah, and the freedom in showing their status and skill, and the diversity in the representation of woman beauty. Three myths (ideologies) found in this research are a deconstruction of a negative stereotype of Muslimah in America, beauty standard, and egalitarianism values. Therefore, this research argues that the advertisement is an underground movement of Muslim women as their resistance to negative stigmas in American society by expressing their identities, ability, and egalitarianism values.

Abstract

This article is written based on ethnographical notes, through observation, interviews, and direct involvement in the lesser pilgrimage (umroh) to Medina on March 12-20, 2016. The writing focuses on the performance of the ritual and other factors which have influenced the development of the holy city from social, eco-nomic, and cultural perspectives making the modern city of Medina. This article reveals that Medina as a holy city of pilgrimage destination grows with modern capitalism with the mushrooming business in accommodation and world products. Not only does the religion of Islam mix with capitalism, but the combination of the two does not decrease the sacrality of the city and the performance of the rituals in the city. In fact, the sacrality and holiness remain intact amidst commercialization of the city in the forms of luxuriouos hotels, malls, and modern kiosks. What is more, modern Medina is a symbol of plurality with the Muslim visitors for pilgrimage coming from different countries who bring their own local cultures and various religious traditions seen in their diverse fashions, traditions, and religious rites.

Abstract

In the last two decades, the Muslim population in Western Europe has grown in unprecedented ways. At the broader regional level, there are approximately 25 million Muslims living in European Union member states as of 2016, which is estimated to increase to 35 million by 2050. The arrival of Muslims from various countries in the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans has brought about significant changes and issues socially, economically, as well as politically. Undeniably, some phenomena of discrimination and Islamophobia arise in almost all EU countries in various aspects of public life such as hijâb clothing, building mosques, and housing. Using a qualitative approach and field research, this article explores not only the historical accounts of the presence of Islam in several EU countries, but also the relations between Islam and the state. This research presents several cases of discrimination and Islamophobia and the internal dynamics within the Muslim communities as to the challenges of living in completely different atmosphere. Three countries, namely Austria, Belgium, and Germany are chosen to represent European Union countries. This study contributes to the discourse on the integration of Muslims in European culture and to the way EU countries could involve Muslims in constructing European Islam.

Abstract

Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is a collection of articles by contributors who have been teaching classes about Muslims and Islam especially in the Western contexts. This book is edited by Courtney M. Dorroll, an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Wofford College in South Carolina. As an academic at a small college, the editor is alert to the challenges presenting advices on how to teach this important but sensitive issue of Islam to new academics and students in the communities. In the age of misrepresentations and stereotypes of Islam, this book is considered important to teachers and students as a means to encourage them to thoughtfully engage with the topic of Islam. The original idea of Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is initiated from a talk given by Richard C. Martin, a Professor Emeritus of Religion at Emory University. He gave a talk at Wofford College under an invitation from the editor of this book, Courtney M. Dorroll. Professor Martin has written and edited several books including Defenders of Reason in Islam: Mutazilism from Medieval School to Modern Symbol and Rethinking Islamic Studies: From Orientalism to Cosmopolitanism. In this book, the contributors especially shared their personal struggles and address the challenges of teaching about Islamic religion while the media mostly promote Islamophobia and violence. They proposed some approaches to Islamic studies pedagogy and provided some suggestions to better structure the course. These approaches and suggestions are based on their own experiences facing the students and parents who might initially fear the topic related to Muslims and Islam. In order to encourage a deeper engagement in this course, the contributors include collaborative teaching models by doing reading and media suggestions. This approach will result in a broader thinking of students on this subject. It can be said that by reading this particular book, students are exposed to challenging ideas of Islamophobia and encouraged to confront these ideas fairly and objectively. More importantly, this book provides a fair and open discussion of an important issue in teaching about Islam.

Abstract

This article underlines some misunder- standing in the Muslim communities concerning three concepts: orientalism, evangelism and imperialism. In the writer’s view point, orientalism has often been seen in it’s a pejorative and simplified meaning. Therefore the writer attempts to describe Western scholars’ responses to this understanding, and tries to explain some requirements that have been formulated by modern scholars, either Muslim or non-Muslim, regarding ap- proaches in the study of Islam in the framework of religious studies. The writer also argues to what extent that contem- porary Islamic studies (dirâsah islâmiyyah mu’âshirah) is supposed to synthesized between classical Islamic studies and western intellectual history in the study of Islam in the modern world.

Abstract

This article addresses critical ideas about constructing scientific philosophy within the Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah Higher Learning Institutions (PTMA) circles through the concept of integrating Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (Islam and Muhammadiyah Principles), abbreviated as AIK, into the process of developing knowledge and science. Thus, the author provides a broad definition of AIK and distinguishes it into three main aspects. In the next step, the author explains two reasons for developing scientific philosophy in PTMA, including internal reasons in Muhammadiyah and Islam and external ones related to the development of modern science. Consequently, two approaches can be applied to integrate AIK into scientific development through objective and subjective approaches. In definition, the objective approach is a way of dealing with the issues through analyzing and re-building the structure of science it including paradigm (ontology), theories and methods (epistemology), and applications (axiology). In contrast, the subjective approach is the enrichment of the scientist through considering science and religion as complementary instead of contradictory.

Abstract

This article analizes the issues of   consumtion in Muslim societies and   attempts to reconturct the Islamic   perspective on comsumption. By referring   to the biography of Prophet Muhammad,   the write argues that despite the fact that   there are religious narratives on the way   Muslims should behave in their everyday   life; the Muslim perspective of consump-   tion should also be discussed critically by   utilizing interdisclipnary studies in   humanities and social sciences. The writer   argues that the utilization of modern   social sciences, both religious and secular,   in understanding Islamic tradition, will   bring to new Muslim interpretation on   certain issues such as the theory of   production and consumption in Muslim   societies. It is believed that the Prophet   Muhammad’ life style can be example for   Muslim in modern times, as Prophet was   very concerned with the issues of public   health, cleanliness, and orderliness
